To wish Christmas Ceiling Garlands/Chains would become trendy again!?!

BellsAreRinging1 · 01/12/2018 12:02

We have some unopened shiny ceiling decorations, I won't put them up because I want to fit in with the modern look (don't flame me!) but so wish these were trendy again! That was the magic of Christmas for me, the ceiling all colourful and lower with stars spinning round when you passed under them! I'm 33.

Now they are classed as 'tacky'! It's a shame they won't be a memory for our generation of kids!

Now unicorn, rainbow and oil slick colours are a trend again, can we hope for a beautiful tacky Christmas again with coloured tree tights that resemble a box of Quality of Streets 😍

I've brought loads of them this year and fully intend to put them up, I don't care if it's not trendy , my kids loved them in the shop and we always had them when I was young so thought sod it lets do it, my husband took more convincing about the though

Feelingsad33 · 01/12/2018 17:51

I’ve been wanting to get these again wanting the full 80s look. I can’t find any though! What shops have people seen them in?

Oldraver · 01/12/2018 18:05

I used to have these....four pinned in the centre of the room going to each corner with a big dangly one in the centre and corners

I stick with my disco light in the bay window now

BellsAreRinging1 · 01/12/2018 18:05

tshirtsuntan

I really want the big card father Christmas and reindeer joined with cords that used to run up our stairs in the 80's but I can't find it

We had this too. I thought it was absolutely WONDERFUL

PeggyIsInTheNarrative · 01/12/2018 19:56

Father Christmas and reindeer card garland

You’re welcome [santa]

ICouldBeSomebodyYouKnow · 01/12/2018 20:26

I thought you meant the paper chains I used to make at primary school out of strips of patterned paper.

The shiny ones still seem modern to me.

PixieCutRegret · 01/12/2018 20:38

I have found my people! I may have to have a nostalgic Christmas theme this year.

Lollypop27 · 01/12/2018 20:38

My closest friend has ceiling decorations. When she first told me I took the piss (lighthearted). When I went over to see her it all looked amazing and really Christmassy

Bluntness100 · 01/12/2018 20:49

God I remember these too and rhe crepe paper paper chains strung across the room.

I woildnt put them up now, but as I gaze at my elegant tinseless tree with the red and gold baubles and tartan ribbon, I do wonder if we lost some of thr fun of Xmas.

Put em up. Maybe you'll be the trend setter.

ForalltheSaints · 01/12/2018 20:54

The difficulty was keeping them up without drawing pins, leaving holes in the ceiling.

WitWicky · 01/12/2018 20:56

DH has commenced his annual battle to keep our ceiling garlands up until at least Boxing Day Grin we aim for elf-vomit chic as our Christmas aesthetic so they're practically the classiest thing in the house 😂

Aeroflotgirl · 01/12/2018 20:59

Well they are in this house, I love them, bring back childhood memories and paper chains. You don't get get them anymore, however garlands are making a comeback. I keep seeing them in shops.

highheelsandbobblehats · 01/12/2018 20:59

These were Christmas for me. The garlands going from each corner to the light in the middle and then stars/snowflakes/bells in the gaps. One of my neighbours goes to town with these decorations. We can see it through the window and my kids (7 and 5) love how it looks. I've been inspired to go full on tat this year. Like a previous poster said,if you can't do it at Christmas, when can you?

GnomeDePlume · 01/12/2018 21:10

We had paper garlands going from the corners to the light in the middle with an arrangement of balloons in each corner.

We also had huge bulbed tree lights which would fizzle excitingly.

The 1970s fire hazard was completed by a fir tree which would desicate and shed its needles entirely by about Boxing Day.

skybluee · 01/12/2018 21:19

If you go to that Wilko link and put garland in the search box absolutely tonnes come up - all different colours and designs

www.wilko.com/en-uk/search/?text=garland

you can load more at the bottom, there are some nice silver ones.

Peta11 · 01/12/2018 21:26

OP put them up! We have them in the playroom ( no room for a tree) we love them!

agentdaisy · 01/12/2018 21:55

If you like them then put them up.

We currently have a mix of foil garlands and paper chains completely covering the living room ceiling and I've still got some dangling stars to put up. Christmas for me is about having as many tacky garlands, paper chains, dangling stars, lights and tinsel as possible. All my favourite childhood memories are about putting up the Christmas decorations and seeing all the lights and colours and I want the same for my dcs.

My only concession to style is having matching colours so we have a few sets of decorations for the tree and ceiling. This year we have red, gold and green. We've also got a set of blue, purple and silver decorations and pink, black and silver. Which goes up depends on what mood I'm in when I get them all down from the attic.

Albatross26 · 01/12/2018 21:57

highheelsandbobblehats yes that's exactly how we'd have them, one from each corner to the light and then one along each edge of the ceiling with all the dangly ones in between. I had so many you could hardly see the ceiling! Such great memories :)

Flowersonthewall · 01/12/2018 21:57

Oh put them up! I got a box of decorations from my Nan last year and some amazing retro shiny garlands were in there they are now up and I love them!

PrincessScarlett · 01/12/2018 22:00

They are in all the shops so there must be demand for them otherwise the shops wouldn't sell them.

Go for it! We have paper chains, paper snowflakes and foil garlands everywhere. The kids (and me!) love it.

Adviceforhouse · 01/12/2018 22:03

Awwww thank you for this post it has given me such fond memories of childhood and hanging them up with my mum. More so as well as they remind me of my Nan who I lost two years ago. Get em up!! Xx

BellsAreRinging1 · 01/12/2018 22:05

I love the silver and irridescent Wilko ones for a slightly modern twist. Let's do this shiz!!
