AIBU to think that if you call your child Abcde you cannot be surprised if people laugh?

A mother has complained that an airline employee laughed at her daughter's name Abcde (pronounced Ab city) and took a photo of boarding pass and put it on fb. I agree that worker was out of order and Def should not have posted it but to give poor innocent child such a silly name is going to cause her a lifetime of stress!

The only person to blame here is the parents for setting their daughter up for a lifetime of bullying..

Soubriquet · 30/11/2018 10:06

Yes you can!!

It’s very unprofessional for the member of staff to laugh at the child especially to her face

If you want to do it, you do it in private in the staff room. Not standing there pointing and laughing

I personally am disgusted by his behaviour and I hope he is disciplined.

It gives the company a bad name

Joinourclub · 30/11/2018 10:07

Poor child.

araiwa · 30/11/2018 10:07

Judging by the number of threads it seems a popular name

profpoopsnagle · 30/11/2018 10:08

You can laugh in private.

Not in a professional capacity. And not to use professional time to take a photo to share on social media.

Soubriquet · 30/11/2018 10:12

looks like the airline has apologised now

pepsirolla · 30/11/2018 10:13

According to Vocativ, a news and data website, published a piece in 2014 saying there were at that time 328 children in the US named "Abcde" , according to the Social Security Administration Hmm

If I saw that on a ticket I would probably involuntarily snort or laugh.

What an attention seeking mother, and poor child.

ToEarlyForDecorations · 30/11/2018 10:17

Well they wanted their child to be different, not run of the mill. Nailed it.

Having a child is a vanity project. The name of the child is usually all about the parents. I heard that someone called their kids Aslan and Mika. Yes really.

Soubriquet · 30/11/2018 10:20

I know a Mika. I don’t think it’s thay bad actually.

Saying that I do know a Spike which is a bit odd to me. Not a nickname either. Birth name Spike. But I don’t say anything. I just smile

Sinead100 · 30/11/2018 10:21

ToEarlyForDecorations

Aslan and Mika are both real, Turkish/ Muslim names. So of course people would have named their children those.

PS it's "Too" not "To". Yes, really.

Urbanbeetler · 30/11/2018 10:23

You don’t put shit like that on social media. Even if the kid was called fuckabucket you don’t do it. Of course steward should be disciplined.

Hisaishi · 30/11/2018 10:28

What's wrong with Aslan and Mika? They are names. Do you usually sneer at names from other cultures?

ABCDE is not a name. He probably shouldn't have laughed but there you go. Sometimes people have bad reactions to things because people are human beings. He shouldn't have posted it on social media, for sure. That was shit behaviour. If I'd seen it, I'd have assumed it was an error on the boarding pass.

LittleScottieDog · 30/11/2018 10:29

Parents can expect people to laugh in private perhaps, but no professional should be laughing in public. Taking a photo of the boarding card or whatever and posting on social media to laugh is very unprofessional.

As a teacher I met children with all kinds of names. The more unusual ones may be given in private conversations when these things come up, and perhaps laughed over, but had I posted about them on social media and made fun of them I could have rightly expected to have been pulled into the head's office to explain myself.

SaucyJack · 30/11/2018 10:30

The meaning of the name Aslan is lion, and it was a perfectly normal name in the Middle East long before CS Lewis used it.

Similar situation for Mercedes and the car. Google before you snigger.

ABCDE is pushing the limits, but that woman was totally out of order to put it on social media. Totally.

nornironrock · 30/11/2018 10:31

I wish parents would just think about the g=fact that whatever name they inflict on their child will be what people first see/hear when they apply for jobs etc.

Ladidatwinkpants Smith is automatically at a disadvantage in comparison to Laura Jones, purely on the basis that their parents were idiots.

Unless the parents already know the kid will just be a professional hipster.

juneau · 30/11/2018 10:35

Mika is a Scandinavian name and there have been a couple of Formula 1 drivers with that name - Mika Hakkinen and Mika Salo - plus there's a musician called Mika too.

As for Aslan and Abcde - well the less said the better and I'd probably laugh too if I saw that someone had been asinine enough to name their DC something so ridiculous. It's not very kind though or professional of an airline employee to do that and to take a photo of the boarding pass and post it on social media. That poor little girl didn't ask to be given such a stupid name.

FellSwoop · 30/11/2018 10:36

Any adult who can be so cruel as to publicly mock a child, especially for for something they have no choice in, ie their name, deserves to be punished.
even if the name is utterly fucking mindbogglingly atrocious

DunkandEggAgain · 30/11/2018 10:39

ASLAN IS A REAL NAME THOUGH!

ErickBroch · 30/11/2018 10:39

Obviously it's funny but for staff to laugh in a kids face, then take photos and put it on social media? You can't think that is appropriate?

Hisaishi · 30/11/2018 10:40

The fuck is up with people laughing at Aslan as a name?

Would love to know what stunningly amazing names your kids all have.

FellSwoop · 30/11/2018 10:40

And the mum is BU to think you can pronounce ABCDE as Ab City.

pepsirolla · 30/11/2018 10:40

My friends named their son Aslan because they liked the name and meaning. He is now a very cool confident 21 yr old.
It is the made up names that can be tricky I wonder if Abcde's mother's next child will be called Qwerty? Grin

Whatever you think of someone’s name, appearance, behaviour or clothing, as a professional you deal with people professionally and do not mock them. Otherwise get some kind of job where you are not required to interface with the public, because eventually you will see someone or something that makes you want to react like this. And as a professional you just don’t.

I thought it was a seat code gone crazy.
