AIBU to think that if you call your child Abcde you cannot be surprised if people laugh?

A mother has complained that an airline employee laughed at her daughter's name Abcde (pronounced Ab city) and took a photo of boarding pass and put it on fb. I agree that worker was out of order and Def should not have posted it but to give poor innocent child such a silly name is going to cause her a lifetime of stress!

Urbanbeetler Fuckabucket Grin Sorry but I did snort with laughter at that!

MirandaGoshawk · 30/11/2018 10:50

I think Aslan is a fabulous name wish I'd thought if it and if it's a usual name in Turkey, brilliant. But that's beside the point. Abcde's parents thought that 'name' was a good idea. Big mistake. But the airline employee was terrifically unprofessional. Surely they need to cultivate the art of keeping a straight face? And sharing it on social media? Do it anonymously, if you must do it, ffs.

MirandaGoshawk · 30/11/2018 10:51

@ katekat brilliant!

SylvanianFrenemies · 30/11/2018 10:53

The parents are ridiculous, but the airline employee was unprofessional. Poor kid.

Wtf is wrong with Mika? Does it have another meaning I don't know? Seems normal to me.

Aslan is a great sounding name, though I can see the problem if you are around people who don't realise that it didn't come from CS Lewis.

Monkeynuts18 · 30/11/2018 10:55

The parents obviously chose it ‘to be a bit different’. So job done. They can’t complain.

EverythingsDozy · 30/11/2018 10:57

My kid has an unusual name. Granted, not as unusual as Abcde (which I always thought was pronounced ab-see-dee, but that's neither here nor there), but it's not common and is the name of a well known margarine huge giveaway. If someone was making fun of or, god forbid, posted my kids boarding pass on Facebook, I'd absolutely be furious and rightly so! However, I understand that it's not to everyone's taste and if they feel the need to take the piss, discretion would be appreciated.

chocolateavocado99 · 30/11/2018 10:59

I know an Aslan. The parents are the most down to earth people you could meet and admit they love the movie and wanted a strong name for their son.
I also know a Mica. Never thought that was odd.

The flight attendant was out of order. They deserve to be disciplined.

KatieKittens · 30/11/2018 11:01

The mother is not to blame for the airline hostesses actions. That’s a discraceful thing to do to a customer. Even worse that’s it’s a child.

Very unprofessional conduct

Barbeito · 30/11/2018 11:01

It’s pronounced Ab-sidee

Barbeito · 30/11/2018 11:02

Ab-city was a media misreport

Hushnownobodycares · 30/11/2018 11:05

If the parents wanted a unique name they should have changed their own, not inflicted it on a child and left her to change it when she's old enough to realise what a drag it is having to explain it and spell it out three times a day every day but the employee is at fault here.

Every time I hear a story like this I am amazed that there is still anyone left in the world of work who is stupid enough to stick work related moans and dubious lolz on FB yet still it goes on.

pepsirolla · 30/11/2018 11:05

Names can become unintentionally funny. I went to school with a girl called Frances Mold. She was always known as Fanny

dangerrabbit · 30/11/2018 11:06

The person I feel sorry for in all this is the kid.

TrickyD · 30/11/2018 11:08

Abcde is a ridiculous name regardless of how it is pronounced, Absidee would not be much better. Unprofessional though to mock it publicly.

Theknacktoflying · 30/11/2018 11:08

Could have ended up with the name Myfanwy

The sad thing is that there is an African habit/custom that a lot of African children are given African and European names ... in Zambia there have been names like Do It, Beyond Repair, Why God, Doesn’t Matter, Roadblock ...

Nesssie · 30/11/2018 11:15

It’s pronounced Ab-sidee That's much better Hmm

Bejazzled · 30/11/2018 11:20

I agree with pps, in terms of a professional job the steward was very wrong.
However, that parent should know that there is a lifetime ahead of 🙄🙄 😆either behind the child's back or even to their face.

Switcherpoo · 30/11/2018 11:26

My DH spoke to a Mr Snowball yesterday...had to do a credit check and it was defo real. [misses point of thread]

MilkGoatee · 30/11/2018 11:28

Theknackoflying As you probably already know, seeing how you phrased that, Myfanwy is a regular girl's first name. May be uncommon outside Welsh speaking areas (and no, it's not just in Wales that they speak Welsh) but a common, slightly old-fashioned name nonetheless.

allthgoodusernamesaretaken · 30/11/2018 11:29

It's an awful name, but unprofessional of staff to post the boarding pass on social media

Theknacktoflying · 30/11/2018 11:57

I know Smile ..

I suppose my point was (badly made) that I agreed with the OP that whatever name you choose for your child, it is open to derision regardless of how ‘normal’ it sounds to the parents ...

areyoubeingserviced · 30/11/2018 12:03

Hope that the child will be home schooled.
Poor girls going to get the Mickey taken out of her when she goes to school.
The worker was an idiot, but so is the mother who inflicted such a stupid name on their own child all in an attempt to be edgy and different

Willow2017 · 30/11/2018 12:04

I heard that someone called their kids Aslan and Mika. Yes really.

Yes literally thousands of people seeing as they are real names!
Mika has roots in several countries and Aslan is Turkish.

Flight attendant was a disgrace and should be disciplined. Poor kid.

WoldkirkosTheEvilBitch · 30/11/2018 12:07

it's not common and is the name of a well known margarine

Well I think that ICan'tBelieveIt'sNotButter is a very pretty name. Grin

The employee was out of order and has been, rightfully, disciplined.

Not sure how the parents are going to deal with other children taking the mickey, can't really sue them can they.

TheFluffyHippo · 30/11/2018 16:14

Ab-city was a media misreport

The American media was the first to pick it up and reported the pronunciation as it would be over there. So “city” sounds like “siddy”.

Ab-city = Ab-siddy

Either way it’s a stupid name Grin

(PS: I know a Turkish Aslan. Lovely boy and great name)
