To banish cat from the house?

At night.

Have rehomed the bloody thing in the garage.

We haven't had a litter tray indoors for over a year. Had an outside one for a while which she didn't use so I removed it. For the last few weeks, when it's been wet outside, she has been shitting in her bed. Two mornings in a row now I've come down to it.

I don't want an indoor tray again so have locked her in the garage with tray and food where she will go every night over the winter from now on.

DC think IABU but they're not cleaning up the shit and having to do two boil washes, one for bed, one to clean machine!

There seems to be a lot of unnecessary hysteria on this thread. Surely it depends on the cat. I have two, one is a proper little princess, who despite being allowed to go out very rarely does. It would be incredibly unfair to lock her in the garage as she would be miserable, and I'm resigned to having a litter tray in the house for her for the foreseeable.

The other is very much an outdoor cat, who started his life feral, and since then has lived in a stable, then in a garage, then in the conservatory. Even now as an old boy he spends most of his time outside, and would happily sleep in a garage. Presumably OP knows her cat, and it is not the type to be upset by this.

empmalswa · 30/11/2018 12:49

And again OP returns but refuses to acknowledge all the posters suggesting there may be a reason for the sudden change in behaviour.

empmalswa · 30/11/2018 12:53

Cat has not had a litter tray for over a year

Cat shits it's bed twice

Owner banishes cat to garage

And half of Mumsnet think it's ok because cats can live outside/in garages happily, completely ignoring the sudden change in cat behaviour.

This is one of the worst threads I have seen on here regarding pet ownership. The fact that the OP has people back her up is astounding.

Yes cats can live outside. But anything out of the ordinary with pet behaviour should be at the very least considered, and perhaps a better solution for the cat found.

Refusal to provide a basic litter box is neglectful.

What a crock

I imagine she doesn't care enough to book a vet appointment and spend money.

Yes. Unusual behaviour id think there was something wrong. This was the start for mine Sad

FeckingEll · 30/11/2018 13:25

I wouldn't need to spend money for a vet appointment so that's not the reason I'm not rushing her there.

She's due her bi annual health check in 3 weeks (via plan I pay monthly for). I could bring it forward at no charge if I felt it was necessary.

Last night it wasn't raining. Two nights before that was heavy rain. That's why she crapped inside those nights and not last night.

Oooh I think it's hilarious you're all trying to paint me as a devil on the basis of me putting my cat in the garage overnight with warm bedding when you have no idea about anything. Haven't laughed so much in ages!

If you are so confident that putting the cat in the garage is fine, then why post in AIBU. You could have just done it and no one would have known. Confused

Mississippilessly · 30/11/2018 13:36

I dont understand why your litter tray 'stinks'. We have an indoor cat and it doesnt stink at all.

HildaZelda · 30/11/2018 13:38

OP, did you actually call your cat a 'stupid thing' earlier?
Why do you have a cat when it's clear you have no interest in her and the poor little thing is obviously just a hindrance to you.
Your argument about it being fine because you're a vegetarian is quite frankly laughable.

fenneltea · 30/11/2018 13:42

Putting the cat in the garage because there is no way for it to toilet in the house so you got mad at it is the issue; and not sure what not eating meat has got to do with being a good pet owner? Confused but I eat meat that I know has had a decent life, (which is more than some pet owners if they can't accomodate a litter tray for an animal that is in the home with them!)

We have a pet as kids wanted one (not picking up dog poo from the street), she needed a home as born in a rescue centre, and I think it's important they learn to show empathy to animals hence why I have accommodated her in the garage rather than kicking the 'stupid thing' out all night in the rain and cold.

She doesn't seem to be offended by me calling her a stupid thing. Just wandered over for a few strokes which is all she will tolerate Grin.

We have 5 indoor cats and unless one is in the middle of having a big shit you really can’t smell anything if they are cleaned regularly.

pigsDOfly · 30/11/2018 13:50

OP's attempts at being a bit of windup merchant I suspect.

OP AIBU to put my cat in the garage? Nine pages of almost unanimous replies saying yes you are and OP saying no I'm not.

Why bother posting in the first place if you are so convinced that you're right unless as an attempt to get reaction out of people.

Just get on with sticking your cat in the garage if that's what you want to do.

Perfectly1mperfect · 30/11/2018 13:52

Shock Not sure they would have learnt this skill too well from you. I really hope this thread isn't for real.

Oliversmumsarmy · 30/11/2018 13:53

My children learned empathy from me. I didn’t need to go out and get a pet.

I think your issue is you have a problem with animals doing what comes naturally.

Not sure how you expect the cat to last all night without a litter tray.

Imagine your dc not being able to access toilet facilities during the night. I would think they would wet the bed too

Perfectly1mperfect · 30/11/2018 13:58

I agree. Also it's just part of being a pet owner. They do have to go to the toilet, they do get ill, they are not 'perfect'. I wonder when OPs children get a stomach bug, how she copes. Clearly a bit of a smell and washing bedding is far too much to cope with.

mydogisthebest · 30/11/2018 14:08

You sound like an awful cat owner and a pretty horrible person too. Calling your cat all sorts of names! You should not have a pet unless you love them and want to take proper care of them.

Cats do not just mess in their beds and your cat needs a vet check to see if there is something wrong.

It's not that cold at present but will, obviously, get colder and the cat should be indoors not in a garage.

I can't believe some posters think what you are doing is ok like the poster a few pages back who said lots of cats in France live outside! Oh yes the wonderful animal loving French.

I lived in France for a few years and have never seen so many dogs tied up in the garden without adequate, or even any, shelter. Often, too, with no available drinking water. They don't seem to believe in having their cats neutered and just drown any kittens

empmalswa · 30/11/2018 14:19

You are doing it wrong.

HTH

Threadastaire · 30/11/2018 14:25

Tbf the cat is probably a lot better at teaching the children empathy than the OP is.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 30/11/2018 14:33

Those suggesting ‘put a flap in’ between house and integral garage. Be careful. Doors between integral garages and living spaces are fire doors (or they should be). You shouldn’t be amending the structure of fire doors, you will reduce their effectiveness in the event of fire and compromise your family’s safety.

Pursefirst · 30/11/2018 14:38

OP, you are despicable. Poor, poor cat.

Vitalogy · 30/11/2018 14:45

DonDrapersOldFashioned I suggested a cat flap but meant on the actual garage door.
