To banish cat from the house?

At night.

Have rehomed the bloody thing in the garage.

We haven't had a litter tray indoors for over a year. Had an outside one for a while which she didn't use so I removed it. For the last few weeks, when it's been wet outside, she has been shitting in her bed. Two mornings in a row now I've come down to it.

I don't want an indoor tray again so have locked her in the garage with tray and food where she will go every night over the winter from now on.

DC think IABU but they're not cleaning up the shit and having to do two boil washes, one for bed, one to clean machine!

One of my cats started going to the toilet in a corner of the living room during the night recently. I think she had been a bit stressed because we had had overnight guests who she didn’t know. It took us a whole weekend of scrubbing, hiring a carpet cleaner etc to sort it.

Never once occurred to me to put my poor nervous girl in the garage! We just covered the area she had been using with a piece of board to discourage her and provided an extra litter tray overnight, and gave her treats and lots of fuss when we saw her using the tray. Proble seems to be resolved without any recourse to cold garages.

Take your cat to the vet. Stop trying to convince yourself you are a concerned and caring owner when you obviously don't give a damn about your pet's welfare.

Nesssie · 30/11/2018 11:04

I have my doubts about this thread now. Deliberately provoking with her horrible description of the cat and refusal to see what might be wrong.
If its real, you are a horrible persons. End of.

My Female cat started pooing indoors overnight last year, I realised that her reluctance to go outside was down to badgers wandering about in the garden (we back on to woods).
I just put a litter tray in the bathroom where I have one of those airwick thingies that spurts out air freshener at intervals.
I can't see that clearing up a bit of cat litter once in the morning is much of a chore.

SpamChaudFroid · 30/11/2018 11:36

Why on earth do you have a cat? From your posts it seems you despise the poor thing. Apart from the cruelty, animals know when they're disliked.

I do hope you'll consider re-homing her.

Peacocking · 30/11/2018 11:47

Haven't read the whole thread, however if shes going to sleep in the garage, but a plug in heat pad from Amazon and a little cave style bed with a couple of fleecy blankets. She'll be warm as toast and probably quite happy sleeping out there

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 30/11/2018 11:56

If one of your kids had an accident at night and made a mess in their bed would you lock them in the garage to cry? No you wouldn't because it would be cruel and you would want to understand why it had happened , were they unwell, did they get scared of going to use the loo, etc

I don't see the difference personally. If you don't want to clear up after a cat, rehome the poor thing

spinn · 30/11/2018 11:56

Given this is a recent change in behaviour you really should check it out with the vet.

One of mine urinated on the bath mat 3 nights in a row last week, was also felt she was behaving a bit off for a few days.... we plugged in a feliway and gave her a different food, she hasn't done it since.

Our other cat was doing this for a few days and was upset with the other cat being in her territory so we put a litter tray in that room for a few weeks and gradually moved it back out once she calmed back down.

It seems a very extreme reaction to kick it out to the garage.

Yeah, I think this is a bit off too. Our cats drive me bonkers (and we won't get any more when they pass) and I hate dealing with the litter tray –but when I got them, I made a commitment to look after them properly and that's what I do, so they have two litter trays inside which are kept clean and scooped so they don't stink as well as warm and cosy beds. The garage would be quite unpleasant for them, as well as removing them from family life and the social aspect of having people around. It would also be a sudden change for them.

Unfortunately part of owning pets is that sometimes there will be shit and piss on stuff. You've taken away her indoor toilet, so it's not really that surprising that there's shit on the floor sometimes.

If you are going to keep her in garage, at least please make sure that it's safe and warm for her –but if you don't enjoy having her around and are just going to banish her from the house, it might be nicer finding somewhere else for her.

Dotty1970 · 30/11/2018 12:11

I think it's disgusting having litter trays in the house when the cat is an outdoor cat, why!?
It smells vile and it's basically allowing the cat to shit and piss in the house, ours knows it's outside only so isn't confused hopefully.... My dog doesn't have a litter tray!
Our cat never does anything in the house.... Fingers crossed.... If he wouldn't go out whilst raining I would chuck him out like I do the dog and let them back in when they've been to the toilet.

Ours would be garaged too but with a cat flap if he started soiling the house.

Printerneedsink · 30/11/2018 12:14

My vet says that cats are fine to sleep outdoors as long as they have shelter, so a garage would be fine. although if your cat hasn't been outdoors much this autumn they won't have grown winter fur.

gamerchick · 30/11/2018 12:16

You're all heart dotty Hmm why you bother having animals if chucking them out rather than taking them to a vet for a change in habit is beyond me.

Dotty1970 · 30/11/2018 12:16

Ours sleeps in the garage a lot through choice of we leave the door open

Vitalogy · 30/11/2018 12:17

Do you like the cat OP? Are they goady off hand comments or what. I agree with PP, the cat will know if you don't like it, which isn't fair is it?

WendyWoofer · 30/11/2018 12:24

No matter what litter you use, cat shit still stinks

No shit Sherlock!

If you can't cope with animal shit you shouldn't have got a pet that you thought would be everyone else's problem!

MrMeSeeks · 30/11/2018 12:26

No matter what litter you use, cat shit still stinks. When cat had an indoor tray, it was disinfected with Method spray (non toxic to cats) every 2/3 days and shit scooped ASAP after it appeared but it still stunk house out for hours afterwards. Those who think their cats don't stink are nose blind!

I clean my tray everytime they shit, ao no, they dont stink.

And ours is a house cat, maybe before you say its cruel you may want to think there are reasons people have housecats Hmm

FeckingEll · 30/11/2018 12:27

staffiegirl the term 'house cat' normally presumes that they are not let out of the house, yours are evidently just cats then Hmm. You could have made that clearer.

stopit lucky you, you evidently have not experience real evil or heartlessness if you think this is it, or you are just a keyboard warrior/drama llama with not much else to do?

As I said in my OP, cat is banished over night.

She isn't losing any social contact as she didn't have any while we were all asleep upstairs and she was downstairs anyway.

She is currently asleep on her clean bed in the house. Will be locked in garage when I go to bed tonight at midnight, let out at 7 am on the morning.

She wasn't using her litter tray in house which is why it was removed 18 month ago.

Thinking back, none of the cats I had growing up had litter trays after kitten hood, it's relatively normal

Not going to start waking up to the smell of cat shit again when it's not necessary!

Thank you to the posters who have responded reasonably as opposed to the absolute batshit ones asking if I would lock my DC in the garage. Well no, because an animal with fur is not like a human without fur. Wouldn't eat my DC eitherGrin.

Starlight345 · 30/11/2018 12:27

Yabu . I have just cleaned cat shit up off my garden . I don’t have a cat !!!

Dodie66 · 30/11/2018 12:28

Try wood pellet cat litter. I used to have a clay cat litter and it smelled very morning when I got up. I switched to wood pellet litter and now we don’t get smell. It absorbs everything

SaltPans · 30/11/2018 12:28

Nobody should get a cat, if they can't cope with D & V! Animals are bound to be ill sometimes, especially cats, who wolf things down and then bring it back up again; or eat things they find outdoors that disagrees with them.

IMO, OP is a troll!

ChristinaMarlowe · 30/11/2018 12:34

What a bizarre thread.

Am I being unreasonable?
Yes. Very. You're a dick.
Ah, let's argue the toss because you're all wrong and I'm definitely not being unreasonable.

Get a pet rock. I imagine you'd have a lot in common with it for a start, also they don't mind being locked in garages.

Honeyroar · 30/11/2018 12:37

Generally speaking I don't think it's that bad for a cat to sleep in a garage, as long as there is lots of bedding and a good bed for them (personally I'd put a reasonably high sided cardboard box in with an old duvet in it, so the cat can snuggle in out of any draughts. There are lots of farm cats and stable costs that sleep in haysheds or barns (my two house cats often go out overnight by choice and spend time down at my stables.

However what you should also be doing is getting to the bottom of why it suddenly went to the loo in its own bed. It's not normal for a cat and is probably a sign of other problems. You do come across as pretty uncaring about the cat and a bit lazy when it comes to looking after it.
