Married with one DS who is 3. I was 35 when I got pregnant and almost 36 when I had him. It took over 2 years to get pregnant. We weren’t timing sex to most fertile times, just not using any protection. We haven’t been able to try again until now as we can’t afford two lots of childcare. DS will be in school by the time I had another baby if I concieved now. We are trying again now on most fertile days but nothing. It’s been several months. I don’t smoke, am taking pregnacare conception tablets, leading healthy lifestyle, I’m not overweight, I rarely drink. I know it’s not been that long but I can’t help feeling it’s not going to happen. Please cheer me up with your stories of babies post 39 years and any tips you have!

DH took me on a surprise weekend away to Amsterdam for my fortieth; nine months later youngest DD was born!
We weren't trying to conceive, in fact were trying not to.
Not sure what to suggest, but just in case anyone comes on saying you'll be more tired etc. as an older mother then it's not true. I found it much easier than when I had my first at 22 and was clueless.

CAAKE · 28/11/2018 20:02

When I had DS2 I told my midwife I thought I was an older mother at 42. Her response was "[snort!] 42? That's far from usual these days".

AConvivialHost · 28/11/2018 20:11

I had my first at 30 and my second at 42 (husband was 49) - complete surprise as we'd struggled with secondary infertility and had accepted that we would remain a family of 3. No idea what to suggest - I conceived after a night on the cocktails Smile. I also agree with the PP, it's not more tiring being an older mum. I'm probably less tired this time round as this one actually sleeps!

Lndnmummy · 28/11/2018 20:19

Me too! Conceveied ds 2 at 39 and was 40 by the time he was born.

Booboostwo · 28/11/2018 20:20

I had DD at 39 after 14 months TTC and DS at 42 again after 14 months TTC. We didn’t try anything in particular and actually were very busy so didn’t have sex that often either.

MaryShelley1818 · 28/11/2018 20:23

We conceived DS a month before I turned 39. It took 5 cycles and DP took wellman vitamins, I took 5mg Folic Acid and we used preseed. I’m now 40 and DS turns 1 next week. We hope to try for a sibling for him next year when I’ll be 41.

thisonebreath · 28/11/2018 20:25

Third DD is 11 weeks old and I am 41. She was conceived after about a year of TTC. I'm not any more tired than I was with first two - born when I was 31 & 33 - but I'm much more relaxed this time. Good luck.

Liveinthepresent · 28/11/2018 20:26

First at 39 after 18 month ttc.
Second at 41 after I think six months trying ( and not trying very hard due to already having a tiring baby !)
As a PP said my midwife was also entirely dismissive of my comments about age - said she saw lots of first time mums older than me.
Good luck op keep the faith !

I got pregnant at 44 with DC4 unexpectedly but sadly miscarried. We decided to try again and I conceived relatively easily but lost three more pregnancies over the next 12 months at which point we had decided to give up. I then discovered I was pregnant again and this time it stuck, DD was born when I was 46 after a problem free pregnancy and labour. There are lots of mums in their forties at playgroup so I think it definitely is possible

HayCaramba · 28/11/2018 20:34

Had DS1 at 34 and DS2 at 39. Conceived DS2 first month of trying. I’d been tracking my cycle using an app for 6 months prior. Then dtd every day of my fertile period.

Tistheseason17 · 28/11/2018 20:44

I'm overweight , hypothyroid and had first at 39 and second at 40.

It can and does happen! Grin

Greysgirl · 28/11/2018 20:59

Wow, lots of success stories. Thank you ladies. It’s definitely helped my spirits. I hadn’t heard of preseed so I’ll try that.

DD2 was born when I was 42 (DD1 when I was 38).

LoniceraJaponica · 28/11/2018 21:35

I think I conceived DD on my 41st birthday.

hauxwell · 28/11/2018 21:37

I am 42 and 19 weeks pregnant with my first via donor IUI insemination. Got pregnant first go ever even trying to get pregnant!

I am a fatbags and did nothing special but I come from a line of fertile folk.

DustyMaiden · 28/11/2018 21:40

Everyone comes from a line of fertile folk Smile

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 28/11/2018 21:43

I had dd at 40 5 months ago (conceived at 40 as well, I turned 41 a month after she arrived). The consultant I was seeing during pregnancy, the one who delivered dd and the community midwife all seem to think there will be a 3rd child at some point.

Very easy pregnancy and although I was consultant led that was more to with my previous obstetric track record (less than stellar) than my age. I was offered extra scans and that was it.

BalloonSlayer · 28/11/2018 21:44

I have a couple of school friends that had babies at 41.

I had my third at 43, no trying was unplanned got pissed.

Geekster1963 · 28/11/2018 21:47

I had DD when I was almost 40. This was after six miscarriages and we had just about given up hope.

CountFosco · 28/11/2018 21:47

I had DD2 when I was 39 and DS when I was 41. Took 1 month of trying each time, with DS we had sex at least every second day from the last day of my period until the next one was due. But I think I ovulate pretty early in my cycle, with DD2 we had sex once that month (we had an 8 month old, need I say more?) the day my period ended and for all 3 DC my dating scan put me further along than you might think from my LMP. I was obviously very fertile and now at 48 there's no sign of perimenopause yet.

I have friend who has 3DC, all born in her 40s. Our parents generation had children very young whereas in the 1930s far more women had babies in their 40s.

Ragwort · 28/11/2018 21:50

I got pregnant at 42, not ‘trying’ at all, DH must keener than I was. Didn’t even realise for the first 10 weeks, assumed it was the start of the menopause.

thelastshihtzu · 28/11/2018 21:51

I conceived my DD at 39. Took 4 months. I took 5mg folic acid, and vitamins.

KittensAndRainbows · 28/11/2018 21:51

I had DC1 at 36 and DC2 at 42. Keep trying OP. It can happen.

Oliversmumsarmy · 28/11/2018 21:52

Ds when I was 41. Dd born 18months younger.

Obese unfit and not taking any vitamins.

Conceived on first attempt both times
