Blush here me out, I hope I'm not being PFB but I am so fed up with my child's nursery. Time and time again I've said he is not to be outside, but nobody listens! Each day he comes home caked in mud, all up his back, caked on his shoes, not wearing any gloves or a hat, some times not even wearing his wellies just his indoor shoes! Its Baltic. On Friday I went to collect him and they said he was outside making hot chocolate... with the mud Confused he was rolling around like a pig in shit Grin but he was covered from head to toe, in his hair, his ears, his back from when another kid through a mudball at him Hmm I don't know whether I'm overreacting though? Aibu!!

Something is seriously wrong, OP.
I think the letter template is very good.

Out of interest though, to those who know about these things, what does 'supervised' actually mean? Can a child outside be supervised by someone inside looking out of the window or do they have to be within touching distance of child? Something I've never actually thought about before.

Orlande · 25/11/2018 20:31

The EYFS says should always be within sight and hearing and usually both - I imagine the regulations in Scotland are similar.
So possibly if the garden is small and clear and someone is standing inside at a big window watching constantly then it may be legal, but just poor practice.

Orlande · 25/11/2018 20:31

Should be within sight or hearing.

ittakes2 · 25/11/2018 20:34

Buy him mud appropriate clothes. Honestly, poor kid - he needs to get sunshine for vit d and fresh air. He needs to be physical. Let him play for goodness sake - he can be clean for you when he is older.

HerculesTheBercules · 25/11/2018 20:35

CecilyP · 25/11/2018 20:38

Apart from you not reading the thread, ittakes, I can assure you that you will get no vit D from the sun in Scotland in November!

Lweji · 25/11/2018 20:38

Good template, but I think this section is weak:

I will ensure that I always provide suitable clothing for this and think you will agree that in the winter (and for the level of mud-play that seems to be enjoyed) an all-in-one outdoor suit, wellington boots, a hat and gloves would be suitable. These will be provided daily and I ask that, for your part, you ensure that all staff are aware that they must ensure he is wearing this outdoor clothing for outdoor play.

The OP already provides suitable clothing, which is already available to the nursery staff, but they aren't making use of it, and the letter should not only be explicit about this, but should include it as a complaint.

Something like:

"As I have in the past, I will keep ensuring suitable clothing for this is available to the nursery staff to put him on when playing outside, and to change into if he gets wet. This includes: wellington boots, a water proof outer coat, a hat and gloves. I ask that you make sure that your staff ensures he is wearing this outdoor clothing for outdoor play before letting him outside in cold and wet weather, which has not been happening thus far."

Goodness me groundhog day indeed

To stop sending my child to nursery cause they allow him outside
hendricksy · 25/11/2018 20:39

Get a waterproof suit .. it's your responsibility to make sure he has suitable clothing 🙄🙄

Lweji · 25/11/2018 20:40

Honestly, poor kid - he needs to get sunshine for vit d

He won't get much if he gets covered in mud, though. Grin Wink

IceRebel · 25/11/2018 20:40

/\ apparently my sign about reading the thread wasn't big enough Sad

Lweji · 25/11/2018 20:44

There’s no way a 2 year old should need 5 pairs of shoes.

Really? Wellies, snow boots or sandals, 2 x trainers & 1 smart boots or shoes. That's 6 and I don't think it's excessive

Really? I'm pretty sure the OP didn't mean sandals for winter wear, for example. The way she worded it, it was more like he had 5 pairs of shoes to take to nursery, including in winter, and not counting wellies.

PerfectlyGoodAtBeingBad · 25/11/2018 20:50

I had this problem with "winter forest school". Although my son was wrapped up while going in, they didn't keep him that way and the cold would set his asthma off. We spent last weekend in the local children's A&E trying to get his breathing under control and he was given oral steroids once we were allowed home.
Kids don't need to be out when it's freezing outside. Especially my asthmatic 3 year old son. Hmm fresh air is fine, running around cold and wet isn't.

ConcreteUnderpants · 25/11/2018 20:58

Thanks Orlande

madeyemoodysmum · 25/11/2018 21:01

I'd be encouraged by this. What a great nursery.

My kids had a fab outdoors space at nursery too. They loved it. The air is great for them. And a bit of dirt is good.

BarbarianMum · 25/11/2018 21:05

Did you read the thread madeye? Even just the OP's posts? Cause I was chair of a preschool and allowing a child to be outside unsupervised would have been a disciplinary offence.

Cutesbabasmummy · 25/11/2018 21:07

Nothing wrong with playing outside but they are failing in their care of him. My DS nursery ensures they go out at least once a day and staff make sure they are wearing warm coats hats gloves and wellies if the weather dictates. I don't mind his clothes being a bit muddy but I would not be happy with him getting mud everywhere and not being properly dressed. YADNBU

hazeyjane · 25/11/2018 21:56

I'd be encouraged by this. What a great nursery.

Which bit of it leads you to think it is so great...not being bothered to ensure the child is dressed in the appropriate clothes provided? Not being sent home dry and comfortable? Or maybe the real doozie...being left outside on his own at 2?

Willow2017 · 25/11/2018 22:13

Buy him mud appropriate clothes. Honestly, poor kid - he needs to get sunshine for vit d and fresh air. He needs to be physical. Let him play for goodness sake - he can be clean for you when he is older.

Its been pissing down and blowing a gale here and 4* for a week!
How much bloody sunshine or vit D do you think an child outside in indoor clothes, plimsoles and covered in mud is going to freaking get in Scotland in NOVEMBER?

Of all the insane posts!

Get a waterproof suit .. it's your responsibility to make sure he has suitable clothing
HE HAS GOT COATS/WATERPROOFS/WELLIES, THE NURSERY DO NOT PUT THEM ON HIM.

Are people just reading with their eyes shut on here?
Fuck me its an epidemic of incomprehension on this thread not to mention stating the bloody obvious
"I am the only one on the whole thread who has thought to tell you to buy him waterproofs, a coat, boots, shoes, wellies op aint I clever"?

Nope not really,100 people before you spouted the same shite.

FlyingwithBaby · 25/11/2018 22:21

YABVU.
It sounds as if your little one needs an all in one waterproof suit and wellies... if the nursery staff are not putting them on just talk to them and ask that they help him!
Mud and outdoor play is brilliant for little ones’ development, gross motor skills, immune systems , etc please allow him to keep going out!

Princess1066 · 25/11/2018 22:26

I have read all posts - is this thread for real?

I really find it hard to believe that any Nursery would say they leave a child unsupervised as it gives them 1 to1 time with other children Confused

Anyone who works in childcare (as I have done for too many years to mention) knows that the main priority of the job is keeping children safe.

As for the other issues re clothing it all sounds very odd Hmm
