Just that really. I just find it unpleasant and my DD7 corrects people she has heard on TV call children kids as she knows that 'kids' are baby goats.

"Unpleasant" is a bit extreme. Can you elaborate on why you find it "unpleasant"?

FissionChips · 25/11/2018 02:03

YES YABU!!

Jackshouse · 25/11/2018 02:03

You can dislike whoever you want but it is not something I can find the energy or space to become concerned with

BTW - writing in capitals is the the equivalent of shouting and is therefore considered to be rude.

SylviaAndSidney · 25/11/2018 02:03

Annoying shouty thread titles written in capitals are more annoying than someone saying kids.

ConfusedWife1234 · 25/11/2018 02:03

In all honesty English is not my native language and I am not sure how annoying it sounds... my native language does not have a similar word... but I think it is a bit OTT... if you dislike people for using a wrong word how do you think about people who murder little children and rape? Safe your dislike for those who deserve it.

ElizabethMainwaring · 25/11/2018 02:03

I do it. It's better than 'guys'.

Birdie6 · 25/11/2018 02:07

I call my children kids. You can be as pedantic as you like, but many terms in the English language have more than one meaning - yes, kids are baby goats but they are also human's children. Maybe you should save your "unpleasant reaction" for when you hear of people killing or raping little children, using them as slave labour etc. Choose your battles and STOP SHOUTING.

JosephineBucket · 25/11/2018 02:08

www.etymonline.com/word/kid

"Extended meaning "child" is first recorded as slang 1590s, established in informal usage by 1840s. "

YANBU to dislike it, but YABVU to insist that the usage is wrong when it's been around for over 150 years. Language evolves.

MarthaArthur · 25/11/2018 02:09

Calm down Kiddo its just a harmless word.

DramaAlpaca · 25/11/2018 02:09

Meh. I can't bring myself to get worked up about it.

I don't like people shouting at me in capital letters though Wink

WhistlerGrey · 25/11/2018 02:11

Oh I hate this too! I don’t mind in people’s everyday conversations so much but I do object to the tv and print media using it without respite.

ButchyRestingFace · 25/11/2018 02:13

my DD7 corrects people she has heard on TV call children kids as she knows that 'kids' are baby goats.

How do the adults respond btw?

vodkaredbullgirl · 25/11/2018 02:14

I still call my 21 and 19 yr old dds kids lol

Greensleeves · 25/11/2018 02:15

YABU BECAUSE THAT'S REALLY QUITE A LOT OF PEOPLE

MarvinMarvinson · 25/11/2018 02:16

Oh god. Pet hate for me - people complaining about people who use kids for children. Especially when they trot out the kids are baby goats line - argh!

Lovingbenidorm · 25/11/2018 02:18

I like “bairns” 😊

Bluerussian · 25/11/2018 02:19

It's alright to refer to children as 'kids'. It's friendly.

UnWilly · 25/11/2018 02:21

YES YABU

PenelopeFlintstone · 25/11/2018 02:22

Doesn't everyone? I didn't know that some don't!!

SofiaAmes · 25/11/2018 02:23

You have a lot of spare time, I think.

CantSleepClownsWillEatMe · 25/11/2018 02:24

YABU it's hardly some strange new practice, it's a perfectly normal word used to refer to non adult humans as well as to young goats Hmm. I suspect the dislike of 'kids' on MN comes from the usual snobbery of 'oh! An americanism ' so often seen here.

Sashkin · 25/11/2018 02:24

God, your DD sounds completely unbearable! I can’t stand precocious children who try (wrongly) to correct adults, especially when it is clear that they are just parroting their parents. Far more irritating than use of slangy vocabulary.

Lovingbenidorm · 25/11/2018 02:38

Bit harsh sash

Mummyoflittledragon · 25/11/2018 02:41

^^
I agree with Saskin. At least your dd has the excuse of only being 7.

She is going struggle to fit in the world of work if she thinks it’s acceptable to call her superiors out for using a word perfectly correctly. Not to mention becoming an insufferable bore.

You are supposed to be an adult and parent. Why are you allowing your child to believe she is in some way superior to adults just because of the language they use?
