To ask you not to put food waste in your bin?

I see so many people putting food waste into their general waste bin, don't do it!

Your food then goes to landfill, rots and releases damaging methane.

Please, please, use your food waste bin!

We don't have a bin at all as we live on an estate. General waste in one large bin on the estate, dry mixed recycling in the other. No one has ever mentioned a food waste bin or I've never seen anything that looks like one. I know our council give them out to other houses and flats though.

Egg shells don't decompose. They do granulate in the compost which may improve the soil in certain circumstances.

maerd · 21/11/2018 10:22

Our area’s food waste gets taken to a bio digester plant which creates energy by creating methane, so...

strumpetblowingatrumpet · 21/11/2018 10:23

We don't get a food waste bin here.

HettySorrel · 21/11/2018 10:23

And yes, a few people can't afford this - but most people can and should pay for it.

But a lot of us don't need it. My food waste is almost non-existent (I have to remember to empty my small kitchen bin because it never gets full and even then it is almost all non-recyclable packaging) and my garden is so small I just take the garden waste to the recycling place myself twice a year.

strumpetblowingatrumpet · 21/11/2018 10:24

I do have a dog though. He scoffs most of our food waste so I'm not going to get my knickers in a twist about throwing the bits he can't eat in my normal bin. 🤷🏻‍♀️

TheFuckfaceWhisperer · 21/11/2018 10:24

We only have a normal bin and a recycling bin (for cardboard/glass... definitely no food allowed!). Oh, and garden waste. Do not and never have had a food waste bin. Nobody round here does.

lilyblue5 · 21/11/2018 10:25

We don’t have a good waste bin here either! How odd it’s onky some areas?

lilyblue5 · 21/11/2018 10:26

*food. Not good!

RaininSummer · 21/11/2018 10:26

No food waste bin here either but also hardly any food waste. I compost veg stuff and we don't seem to throw food away really.

TheyDoItOnPurposeLynne · 21/11/2018 10:26

Tbh if you're wasting enough food to fill a food waste bin then you need to address issues more domestic than excess methane

GaryBaldbiscuit · 21/11/2018 10:26

WE used to be able to put peelings in with garden waste but then they restricted it due to meat contamination then they stopped in all together.

Nannewnannew · 21/11/2018 10:29

We just have black sacks for general waste and clear sacks for recycling. Our waste goes to an environmentally friendly incinerator which turns waste into energy to supply local houses.

CaveDivingbelle · 21/11/2018 10:29

never even heard of a food waste bin. Don't think it exists at all here...I'd use it if I had one

Celticrose · 21/11/2018 10:29

We have 3 bins. Black for general waste, green for recycling including glass and brown for garden and food waste which includes meat and bones. We also have a small brown caddy for use in kitchen. I use the compostable bags which you can get from council for free ( the only ones you can use) you can also put a small amount of kitchen roll in and shredded paper. I line my bin with newspaper to help keep it clean. Apart from garden waste nothing goes in that is not bagged. The bins are collected fortnighly

Nithead · 21/11/2018 10:34

They are useless on my area with food waste bins. They don't empty it properly then if you complain the come back is : we couldn't because you put on eggshells/ flowers/ there were maggots

All untrue and I just gave up

jay55 · 21/11/2018 10:36

I live in a flat, on a river, it would be a nightmare of vermin if we had food waste bins.

Bowerbird5 · 21/11/2018 10:37

We have two bins. One for rubbish and one for the garden. My daughter had about five when she was at Uni down south.

They other thing is to not waste food. We rarely throw food out. I get really cross with myself if we do. Don't buy too much, plan meals and eat leftovers. We have chickens who have some scraps and a cat who I scrape the bones for.

Santaispolishinghissleigh · 21/11/2018 10:40

What is food waste?
(6 x dc + 4 ddogs!)

RiverTam · 21/11/2018 10:40

Hetty well, if you're going to indulge in that kind of individualistic thinking... It's not just about you!! I'm sure my council tax pays for many things that I personally don't benefit from - doesn't mean I shouldn't still pay for it!

Autumnrocks · 21/11/2018 10:40

Tbh if you're wasting enough food to fill a food waste bin then you need to address issues more domestic than excess methane

I use it for peelings and tea leaves etc. I don't have a garden and room for a compost bin. I don't waste any food.

WhirlyGigWhirlyGig · 21/11/2018 10:42

TheyDoItOnPurpose they're not small bins, not a full size one. You can put bones, peelings, cooked food waste etc in it. To imply we need to look at our domestic management is a little rude really...we have very little waste here.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 21/11/2018 10:46

No garden and no food waste bins but I would if I could.

Jasperoonicle · 21/11/2018 10:48

It is dead handy in summer when you can chuck in the grass cuttings from the garden. Great in autumn for the leaves too and the obligatory pumpkin bits after halloween. Plenty of waste here as we use lots of fruit and veg so good for pineapple/melon/watermelon skins etc.

Fuckimdoingaphd · 21/11/2018 10:49

Don't have a food waste bin. Not allowed to put food waste in the brown bin - it's for garden waste only.
