To ask you not to put food waste in your bin?

I see so many people putting food waste into their general waste bin, don't do it!

Your food then goes to landfill, rots and releases damaging methane.

Please, please, use your food waste bin!

We don't have a food waste bin.

Shazafied · 21/11/2018 09:37

I don’t understand .... I don’t have a food waste bin? Do you mean a compost bin? I don’t have a garden so not sure what I’d do with the compost.

Also if we are on about methane, there are loads of other massive contributors to methane (beef cattle etc). Maybe people need to be more aware of these!

LoniceraJaponica · 21/11/2018 09:37

Our council, and I suspect many other councils, don't offer food waste bins. So where should I put my food waste?

Sparklingbrook · 21/11/2018 09:37

We don't have a food waste bin. We used to but the council did away with them.

But we have a fox that has come for supper for ages, so it's all good.

TheFairyCaravan · 21/11/2018 09:38

We don't have a food waste bin either.

Finfintytint · 21/11/2018 09:39

We don't have a food waste bin but all non meat goes on the compost.

dementedpixie · 21/11/2018 09:39

Not everyone has a food waste bin. I do but others don't

Sirzy · 21/11/2018 09:39

Another without a food waste bin.

Endofthelinefinally · 21/11/2018 09:39

Our council have just discontinued our food waste bins.

HariboLecter · 21/11/2018 09:39

We have a green bin for garden waste - this has a sticker on it telling us specifically not to put food waste in it.
The other options are black bin for general waste or blue bin for plastics, glass etc...

MTBMummy · 21/11/2018 09:39

Sadly lots of councils don't offer food waste bins, and even if you collect it separately and take it to the tip, you have to dump it with general household waste.

Obviously if you have a food waste bin you should use it

Danglingmod · 21/11/2018 09:40

No food waste bins in our council area.

We are in one of the best council areas for recycling in the country, though, so not sure why no food waste too.

dementedpixie · 21/11/2018 09:40

We have a combined food/ garden waste bin but before that had separate collections

howabout · 21/11/2018 09:40

Recycling produces the same gases. Playing devil's advocate surely the alternative solution would be to engineer gas capture from landfill?
Are you also suggesting people don't use compost heaps for the same reason?

MollyHuaCha · 21/11/2018 09:41

Different UK councils collect different things.

They all take general household waste, but there are regional variations in collection of food waste, paper, glass, plastic, metal and garden cuttings.

If you are in a region where food waste is not collected separately, then you have no choice. It goes in general household waste.

AngryMarshmallows · 21/11/2018 09:41

Absolute madness the amount that don't get food waste bins!
There's nothing you can do if your council don't offer them, no wonder our environments fucked.

BroomstickOfLove · 21/11/2018 09:41

Most people don't have a food waste bin. We compost the stuff that be composted, but the rest goes into landfill. I'd use a bokashi bin, but they are really expensive.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 21/11/2018 09:41

We don’t have a food waste bins. I don’t have a garden in which to make a compost heap. Am I still allowed to throw away onion skins or will I be forced to eat them, OP?

GaryBaldbiscuit · 21/11/2018 09:41

we tend not to have too much waste. We eat it.

ChorleyFMcominginyourears · 21/11/2018 09:41

Me either we only have general waste, recycle bin which only takes paper, cardboard and some plastics and a grass bin. The grass bin and the recycle one are checked by the bin men and will not be emptied if anything other than what's allowed is put into it so it has to go in the general one 🤷‍♀️

RiverTam · 21/11/2018 09:42

just stop eating meat and consuming dairy (or but back massively) if you give a damn about methane.

However. that's shocking that so many councils don't offer food waste collection. What are you all doing to lobby your councils to provide this?

BluthsFrozenBananas · 21/11/2018 09:43

We don’t have food waste bins. I have a garden waste bin which I things like veg peelings and apple cores in, but it’s not suitable for something like a chicken carcass or general plate scrapings.

AngryMarshmallows · 21/11/2018 09:43

In our area all of the food waste goes to a processing plant where they create energy from it

OP posts:
Rachelover40 · 21/11/2018 09:43

I have a compostable food waste bin but you can't put all food in it, fruit, veg, bread, eggshells and teabags is all. Meat waste and other stuff has to go in the general rubbish bin. Where else?

LuvSmallDogs · 21/11/2018 09:43

They’ve introduced food waste bins here, but AFAIK they still haven’t bothered setting up a system to compost it so it’s land filled anyway, and the bags they provide for the food caddies aren’t even biodegradable. Couldn’t organise a piss up in a brewery!
