To ask you not to put food waste in your bin?

I see so many people putting food waste into their general waste bin, don't do it!

Your food then goes to landfill, rots and releases damaging methane.

Please, please, use your food waste bin!

Dogs, chooks and compost deal with most of our food waste. Just as well as there is no such thing as a food waste collection here (Aus).

Mia1415 · 21/11/2018 11:09

I do have a food waste bin but the council say if its full to put the waste in the normal/ general rubbish bin.

Nearthebig40 · 21/11/2018 11:11

No food waste bin. Meal planing means not much waste. Dogs, chickens and horses take care of most of the rest!

PuppyMonkey · 21/11/2018 11:13

We have a garden waste bin, but you're not allowed to put food waste in it. We do have a compost bin of our own, but I got a bit scared earlier this year when I kept hearing weird scurrying noises coming from inside it - must have been a rat living in there or something. Sad Shock

fleshmarketclose · 21/11/2018 11:13

No food waste bin here either. At one point we were allowed to put peelings in with the garden waste then got told we shouldn't or the bin wouldn't be collected. Not sure why peelings are any different to garden clippings but obviously our council knows something we don't Hmm

PayingGuests · 21/11/2018 11:13

Our council have stopped food waste bins as well.

Frustratedmum78 · 21/11/2018 11:19

How about a garbage disposal? Would that work?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 21/11/2018 11:22

We don't have a food waste bin. I compost ours and use it for the garden. But, um ... this post is quite sanctimonious, isn't it? What are we all doing to campaign for a food waste bin? Erm, nothing, because it happens not to be one of my priorities. I'm delighted it's one of yours.

BarbarianMum · 21/11/2018 11:22

No food waste bin here either. I compost what I can, recyvle what i can (not food obv) and the rest goes to the incinerator.

Rather than railing at people on here OP, why not spend some time lobbying parliment for a nationwide waste and recycling strategy because the current piecemeal approach (each authority doing its own thing) is a mess?

BarbarianMum · 21/11/2018 11:23

Garbage disposals are the worst. Chucks it all into the sewage system and then we pay for the water companies to sort it out.

Kazzyhoward · 21/11/2018 11:24

Our council don't collect food waste either. And not only do they charge for garden waste collection, they've banned food waste being put in that too. So there's no option other than putting food waste in with general waste for landfull. Thanks council!

TeacupDrama · 21/11/2018 11:25

we have a food waste bin collected every friday, all food cooked/un cooked etc meat veg coffee grounds etc

a glass bin collected every 4th thursday,
general waste every 3rd monday recycling (plastic cardboard paper and tins) every 2nd monday
so some mondays there are 2 bins out some mondays none and some just 1 we have a chart

Garden waste is not collected you can buy a black composting bin from council for £25 if you want one for your garden I don't use mine really

MoonlightMedicine · 21/11/2018 11:27

No food waste bin here either :(

HappyGoodHairBear · 21/11/2018 11:28

No food waste bin here either.

ShodAndShadySenators · 21/11/2018 11:30

We don't have a food waste bin either. We currently have a general waste bin (fortnightly), a recycling bin - no yogurt pots or tetrapaks - also emptied fortnightly, and we pay an additional charge for garden waste bin, also fortnightly. Even before the charge was brought in for garden waste, only some households were offered one. My garden produced a lot of compostable material but I didn't get a bin, so it had to go in with the general waste after my garden composter was full.

You are not permitted to put kitchen food waste in the garden waste bin. Once a chap put potatoes from his garden into the waste bin and was pulled up about it. He went to the local papers and had his photo taken holding up a potato with and mourned, "They didn't even go near my kitchen, it's ridiculous". (I still put windfall apples and figs from the garden into the garden waste bin! It's so very naughty I know but they are not contaminated by grease or similar so I don't give a shiny...)

Hedgehoginthefog · 21/11/2018 11:31

Tbh if you're wasting enough food to fill a food waste bin then you need to address issues more domestic than excess methane

Seriously? They are only caddie sized and if we didn't compost as well it would be overflowing every week. I don't even peel potatoes and carrots but we have onion skin, banana and citrus peels, apple cores, coffee grounds, tea leaves, bones, egg shells, cheese rinds, bay leaves, bouquet garni... We can get through 10+ bananas a week to start with - I'm emptying the compost every other day.

scarbados · 21/11/2018 11:32

We don't have food waste bins. We have a paved courtyard so we have no use for compost. What we do have are seagulls and the last thing the town needs is more food put out for them.

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 21/11/2018 11:34

I think methane from food waste is a drop in the ocean compared to the amount produced from beef and dairy farming, and the production/burning of fossil fuels.

Serialweightwatcher · 21/11/2018 11:34

Never had any food waste bins in our Town ... does it get collected like a normal bin? Sorry but I have no idea

Skyejuly · 21/11/2018 11:35

Ours just got discontinued.

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 21/11/2018 11:35

dementedpixie look up potato peeling crisps - they are delicious. I draw the line at eggs shells though 🤣

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 21/11/2018 11:36

I don't have a food waste bin and live in a flat so no garden to compost it too.

HollowTalk · 21/11/2018 11:37

Who are all these people that you are watching put their food waste into the wrong bin, OP? Or are you as I suspect just feeling in a foul mood and wanting to take it out on someone?

Autumnrocks · 21/11/2018 11:37

We don't have food waste bins. We have a paved courtyard so we have no use for compost. What we do have are seagulls and the last thing the town needs is more food put out for them.

I don't understand your post. The food bins lock via the handle - the food isn't out in plastic bags for collection. Many many seagulls where I live too. It's not an issue.

silkpyjamasallday · 21/11/2018 11:38

We live in a block of flats, so no personal food bins, just big general refuse and 'recycling' bins out the back. I've seen them tip them all into the same bin lorry so I highly doubt our recycling actually gets recycled. I think rotting food waste releasing methane is the least of our worries environmentally speaking.
