I feel slightly on the fence.. What do you think?

Wow" there is poor kids get over it"

wirralsquirral · 20/11/2018 22:13

The ban was implemented following complaints from parents led by at least one parent-governor - the concerns were about parents being pressured to spend on jackets they couldn't afford to 'keep up' with those who had the jackets and kids being bullied if they didn't have the jackets.

GreenMeerkat · 20/11/2018 22:13

Wirral well I don't wear leather or UGGs either but people have a right to disagree with something morally even if they did. Not everything has to come under one blanket stance

'Oh well you eat meat so why should you care about orangutans?'

'Well you have a leather couch so why are you bothered about marine life being killed by plastic'

wirralsquirral · 20/11/2018 22:16

Green But killing an animal to wear it and the suffering it ensures as a result is the same issue.

Those other causes are noble but appear to be unconnected Confused

AllTakenSoRubbishUsername · 20/11/2018 22:16

I just had to look up Moncler coats, I haven't heard of them. This guy is surely not wearing a £1000 coat but actually has accidentally got his £20 sleeping bag stuck to him when he got up? Looks like it, but maybe I'm missing something! Back to the point though, it's a difficult one to enforce - how much you spend on your child's stuff - but that sort of money to go to school in seems crazy!

I dont think school is the place for very expensive items. I can quite see why they dont want the hassle of working out where Kerry's left her coat or whether James coat is, in fact, Robert's, only with the name tag removed.

christmaschristmaschristmas · 20/11/2018 22:19

@Queenofthedrivensnow I too had an incredibly privileged upbringing. I went to school for a time with JL (married to NC)....I'm wondering if we went to the same place?

I think it is ridiculous. Are the school next going to ban the new iPhone? Designer shoes? Designer bras for PE? Designer bags? Purses? The parents dropping off in brand new range rovers when others are dropping off in a Ford Fiesta? It is mad. Mad.

GreenMeerkat · 20/11/2018 22:20

wirral those are just questions I have heard people say.

Besides the fact, Canada Goose (and UGG for that matter), have particularly brutal and cruel methods for how they obtain their materials. Leather is generally a bi-product of the meat industry which is probably why people are more willing to accept it (I imagine)

Bitlost · 20/11/2018 22:22

Please refer to this brand by its proper name, which is Canada Douche. We don’t refer to it any other way in our household.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 20/11/2018 22:24

Actually I think it's absolutely the schools responsibly to try and tackle this horrid symptom of the chronic and gross inequality faced by children just now.

The fact that there appears to be a perverse enjoyment in kitting our your kid in an item that is so beyond out of reach of most children is really really sad.

If I was the head teacher of that school watching kids being made to feel shit because they can't have a 4 figure coat I couldn't stand idle.

What's next then - solid gold protractors?

Queenofthedrivensnow · 20/11/2018 22:27

@christmaschristmaschristmas JJF but guessing a typo.

I digress - £1000 is a huge leap from a what £30odd Calvin Klein bra. Really not the same.

CoachBombay · 20/11/2018 22:27

I don't even let DS wear his £30 best duffle coat from Mothercare to school through fear of him loosing it, I wouldn't dream of strapping 1k to a child and sending them to school with it?! Absolutely barmy...

Queenofthedrivensnow · 20/11/2018 22:28

Though otoh maybe it's one of those issues that if you can it gets worse. Maybe if it's ignored it will go away. Not really an equivalent of that scale of these super wanky jackets.

Pinkyyy · 20/11/2018 22:30

Now you really are reaching. I don't kit my kids out in designer clothes as some sort of sick middle finger gesture to the kids who can't afford it. I like fashion and I like designer brands. Some people are into them and I'm more than sure they're not all trying to seek enjoyment out of those who can't/don't buy designer gear

BadLad · 20/11/2018 22:32

I went to school for a time with JL (married to NC)....I'm wondering if we went to the same place?

I don't know who you mean. I'm hoping JL is James Last.

christmaschristmaschristmas · 20/11/2018 22:33

@Queenofthedrivensnow - yes a typo. I meant JJF married to NC.

KeepUpWillYou · 20/11/2018 22:33

I think it is really out of order sending your child to school in a coat costing hundreds of pounds, when you know that the majority cannot afford that sort of coat, nor is it neccessary. It is actually quite a crass thing to do.

We talk of inequality and this sort of stuff just exacerbates the problem.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 20/11/2018 22:35

@Pinkyyy I can't comment on your personal situation. I know nothing of the demographics of your community/school or the scope of inequality.

I'm assuming the income contrasts in Birkenhead? Are pretty stark for the school to get involved in this issue. In some other areas I doubt staff would even notice.

christmaschristmaschristmas · 20/11/2018 22:35

@Pinkyyy I agree, I don't think of anyone else apart from my DC and I when I buy things for them. Certainly not random kids in their class.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 20/11/2018 22:36

@christmaschristmaschristmas waves!! Assuming you are a st c-erfarian ;-)

@KeepUpWillYou you're right it's very crass

FrankieChips · 20/11/2018 22:37

@wirralsquirral Yep! And have joined in the protests against the opening of the Canada Goose shop in London. It’s still there sadly.

notgivingin789 · 20/11/2018 22:38

At first, I thought Canada Goose was a typical name for a parka jacket with a fur hood. Having a closer look, I realise it's a brand and I've seen their prices.

I can't believe they are parent buying their children nearly 2 grand for a jacket !!!! Hand me downs are fine but I couldn't outright pay that much for a jacket !

Historydweeb · 20/11/2018 22:41

Canada Goose animal welfare standards are sickening. They ANBU, I'm glad they've banned them

wirralsquirral · 20/11/2018 22:49

Frankie I respect your stance. It's the Ugg wearing leather jacket owners I can't understand.

Green Given one of the biggest producers of leather is India I can't imagine much beef coming from there so the bi-product theory is convenient but not very authentic. If people ate the coyote would that make it ok? Confused I eat rabbit so does that make an Yves Salomon rabbit-lined coat acceptable?

blackteasplease · 20/11/2018 22:54

Pah, 1k coats! Ridiculous. 😂😂😂😂

I can't take part in this debate seriously for thinking about spending that on a child's coat!
