I feel slightly on the fence.. What do you think?

Crikey. Thought they were a few £100 not £800. Madness!!!!!

dUHcknotdOOk · 20/11/2018 21:33

Personally I can't see why someone would want to go out wearing something that looks exactly like what's wrapped around my nan's hot water tank.

Yeah it gets cold enough where I live (-10 last winter at the coldest) to possibly justify the use of something a bit warmer than usual but seeing as it also rains a hell of a lot where I live a damn good waterproof coat is a much better investment. And Aldi

festivellama · 20/11/2018 21:34

Anyone who spends that much on a kid's school coat is stark raving bonkers and needs their bumps felt. Talk about a fool and his money are soon parted.

My views on anyone who buys or wears a fur coat are unprintable.
(The sole exception would be those in parts of the world where it is an absolute necessity rather than a fashion accessory).

dUHcknotdOOk · 20/11/2018 21:35

Posted too soon.

And Aldi kids ski coats are less than a tenner and surprisingly good.

GreenMeerkat · 20/11/2018 21:37

I'm not sure what to think about that either.

I LOATHE Canada Goose for use of fur but I wouldn't ban it because I don't agree with it, I wouldn't feel it was up to me to make that decision.

Expensive coats are likely to get stolen though so I would agree with a blanket ban on that basis.

wirralsquirral · 20/11/2018 21:47

Why is fur a particular problem?

Do people feel the same about leather jackets? Or Sheepskin boots? I don't understand why fur is different from those other animal products Confused

(unless you're vegan when all animal products are an issue in which case I completely understand your stance).

Hogglesballs · 20/11/2018 21:48

Those coats are horrible, we hardly need them in the UK do we?

Also just because you label an animal a pest does not change their capacity to suffer. Very cruel trades. Would you let a dog lie with their leg trapped in a snare for hours? Why not, the capacity of the coyote is the same.

Some people have more money than sense.

christmaschristmaschristmas · 20/11/2018 21:48

But why shouldn't a parent be able to buy their children the coats they want to? Ethics aside.

MaisyPops · 20/11/2018 21:52

They can, it doesn't mean the school has to allow them to wear it.
Parents can buy their children designed neon pink glittery trainees with disco lights in the soles, but school don't have to allow students to wear them.

Arnoldthecat · 20/11/2018 21:53

quote,,"Don't ban them, just have a uniform.

But seriously.... who the hell can afford Moncler for their kids?!"

I know of one feckless mother who was happy to advertise on her FB account that she'd just bought her little boy a Moncler jacket. Having said that her BF is a drug dealer and they were evicted from their previous home for dealing and anti social/criminal behaviour.

cl61reb · 20/11/2018 21:55

Happy to see a ban on coats/brands that use animal fur!!!

Pinkyyy · 20/11/2018 21:55

MaisyPops that's fair enough, but these coats are none of those things. They have a logo on the arm and that's about it.

Nutkins24 · 20/11/2018 21:57

But why shouldn't a parent be able to buy their children the coats they want to?

because it’s really fucking stupid and it turns school into some sort of competitive fashion show? A minuscule % of the population is wealthy enough to spend upwards of 500 quid on a kids winter coat, and most of them will probably be privately educated with other rich people. What is clearly happening is parents on middle or even low incomes are indulging their teens in some sort of fantasy Instagram influenced lifestyles, leading to alienation of those kids with parents that refuse or can’t. Why would schools want yet another catalyst for bullying and kids feeling uncomfortable? They already have to deal with masses of shit they shouldn’t have to such as phones and social media in school.

TheFairyCaravan · 20/11/2018 22:01

Yes, and the teachers have enough to do without ranting parents on the phone shouting the odds because the coat is lost/dirty/or ripped. A £600 coat/bag/phone has no place in a school.

Jux · 20/11/2018 22:02

Even if I could afford one, I wouldn't let dd wear it to school - it would have been nicked at the first opportunity at any of the schools she went to. Nicked or shredded.

Pinkyyy · 20/11/2018 22:02

And why would someone call the school because their child didn't look after their own belongings?

Nutkins24 · 20/11/2018 22:03

Also wondering if behind the ban is something more sinister. Is it to do with this county lines stuff? Kids being bribed with money/designer goods? Are these items some sort of drug dealer uniform now they’ve moved on from North Face? We live in a rural area but even here it’s a big problem.

One Twitter user wrote: "Absolutely ridiculous, banning those coats. It's a fact of life that there are poor kids, get over it."

That lovely comment? I found it ever so sensitive as well, no snarling classist attitude there is there!?

JoyceTempleSavage · 20/11/2018 22:04

If 95% of the children were wearing them you might have a point

GreenMeerkat · 20/11/2018 22:05

@wirralsquirral Just look up Canada Goose and how they obtain the fur

TheFairyCaravan · 20/11/2018 22:06

Are you being deliberately obtuse? A lot of parents blame teachers for everything. If their little darling came home saying their £600 coat had gone missing lots of parents would be straight on the phone. Head teachers haven't got the time for that shit.

Pinkyyy · 20/11/2018 22:07

TheFairyCaravan absolutely not. My child's belongings are their own responsibility. I wouldn't be straight on the phone

wirralsquirral · 20/11/2018 22:09

Green I already have done. Confused

Not sure how slaughtering sheep for boots or cows/calves for jackets is any different ethically/morally.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 20/11/2018 22:10

It's so new money isn't it. I was nodding along with the pp saying at her independent school wealth flashing wasn't a thing.
I went to school with some absurdly privileged kids. One is married to Neve Campbell, one is a tv presenter with his annoying dad the actor, you get the idea. Only prominent brand was converse as in the canvas sneakers.

Labelly gear is a bit townie isn't it Wink

Pinkyyy · 20/11/2018 22:12

Queenofthedrivensnow how pretentious. I'm not new money thank you.
