To be livid at Marks & Spencer's sexism: 'Women Must Have Fancy Little Knickers'?

A tweet from FiLiA, along with a photo of two M&S window displays. Men's Must-Haves: Outfits To Impress. Women's Must-Haves: Fancy Little Knickers.

This would be crass enough at any time, but even more so when an Irish girl has recently been blamed for her own rape because of her lacy knickers.

I think I've set foot in M&S for the last time.

How depressing to see people on twitter defending the M&S display

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 22/11/2018 09:52

oh for the love of fuck - only 42% think it's sexist, and 8% aren't bothered. What a fucked-up society Angry

53rdWay · 22/11/2018 10:39

People are very invested in defending the status quo. Look at how many of those comments are along the lines of “oh some people just see sexism everywhere!”. Yeah, because it is everywhere, it’s just more comforting if you refuse to see it as a problem.

Rachelover40 · 22/11/2018 10:48

Doesn't anyone like pretty underclothes? I do, not ashamed to say so. I feel a lot nicer wearing it than in my usual cotton full briefs. Not at all thrush inducing, I've never had thrush. I don't wear thongs for example, think they are most unhygienic & uncomfortable but midi type pants which are cotton gusseted and have a pretty front are gorgeous, with matching bra.

Do you really think that's the point of the objection to the ad?!

I love pretty underwear. I also don't believe they're a "must have" especially with the juxtaposition of the male "dressing to impress"

FFS, it reminds me of when women were told they should always wear something sexy and enticing in bed for their husbands.
I've never worn 'sexy' underwear or little knickers and I've done ok ta very much....

ghostsandghoulies · 22/11/2018 18:57

Nobody is arguing about the underwear. Looks nice enough. The wording on the window gets me- "Fancy Little Knickers" - sounds so pervy. A rapist was recently found innocent because his victim was wearing fancy little knickers (a lace thong) so the thought of it as a must have makes me sick.

The male and female "outfit to impress" windows should have been side by side and the underwear window should have been elsewhere. The wording is just so cringey,

ErrolTheDragon · 22/11/2018 19:03

The underwear would have been better kept to an indoors display rather than a window, TBH. They should have had a display of M&S festive food and drink, much more 'must have' than clothes and undies.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 22/11/2018 19:12

The wording and juxtaposition were unfortunate, but M&S are known for their undies so I'm not surprised they're promoting them for Christmas.

Gre8scott · 22/11/2018 19:34

Holly Willoughby says it in the advert must have fancy little knickers must have big pants

Bumbledop · 22/11/2018 20:07

Epic fail as far as I’m concerned. Absolutely awful. We still have so far to go before attitudes change.
