To be livid at Marks & Spencer's sexism: 'Women Must Have Fancy Little Knickers'?

A tweet from FiLiA, along with a photo of two M&S window displays. Men's Must-Haves: Outfits To Impress. Women's Must-Haves: Fancy Little Knickers.

This would be crass enough at any time, but even more so when an Irish girl has recently been blamed for her own rape because of her lacy knickers.

I think I've set foot in M&S for the last time.

I want to guerrilla their display and replace all the nice mens things with cock socks.

Flashingbeacon · 19/11/2018 18:44

I have no fancy little knickers? Am I a woman?

Worriedwombat2015 · 19/11/2018 18:46

Yeeeeah, out of all the things I "must have" right now, I can assure you fancy little knickers are not in my top 100.

While I'm sure the ad was signed off long before the Ireland rape case, I don't like it. It just seems again the be all and end all of being a woman is to look good and appealing to a man.

But then given recent events in Ireland, of course if you are wearing this kind of underwear, you MUST Be up for a shag, any shag. Otherwise why are you wearing it? Hmm

JacquesHammer · 19/11/2018 18:46

I think we have finally found a true definition of “woman”.

Women. (N) must own fancy little knickers

SpiritedLondon · 19/11/2018 18:47

Well M&S have a reputation for selling underwear and I’ve no doubt that they sell lots at Christmas time. Even “ must have” is not new.... magazines are always flogging the idea that something is a must have so I’m not really bothered by that. What does bother me is the imbalance between the two sides so the Male mannequins are dressed while the females are half naked. It just calls to mind films where the attractive leading lady finds herself in a scene in a bra and pants while all the male characters are all fully dressed. I’m surprised M&S wouldn’t have an “ expert” somewhere who could forecast how disconcerting that is.

This link is working for me. I just searched Twitter for FiLia and found it on their feed.

Bugger sorry. Link: twitter.com/filia_charity/status/1064248341763100672?s=21

It may be sexist, but a large number of men buy their partners underwear for Christmas.

Yeah because when they walk past M&S the window is full of knickers!! If they put something else in the window then men would buy something other than knickers!

TheGreenDot · 19/11/2018 18:51

I think you need to watch the full tv ad.
I’m 99.9% sure the next line was something about big comfy ones? As she flops down in the sofa.

So not sure I can be too upset. And I do get mixed messages about the rape trial. But I still think women can wear what they like and not be asking for sex. So I can’t blame the ad.

waterandlemonjuice · 19/11/2018 18:52

Omg and eww
it’s really inappropriate for all the reasons mentioned

Is it DEFINITELY real?

Helmetbymidnight · 19/11/2018 18:55

The words ‘must have’ always annoy me. This is particularly unfortunate timing with regard to the Ireland rape case.

It’s very revealing, isn’t it, the pressures/messages women get.

WomanOfTime · 19/11/2018 19:00

I don't have, need or want 'fancy little knickers.' I buy my big comfy pants at M&S, but I may have to look elsewhere next time.

Is this another reason why I may be secretly a super-special non-binary person? Because I like underwear that actually covers my arse properly?

ChanandlerBongsNeighbour · 19/11/2018 19:01

Shockingly awful advertising!! Shock

Oliversmumsarmy · 19/11/2018 19:01

I am really hard to buy for at Christmas.

I don’t wear underwear.

I have about 3 or 4 pairs for emergencies but I really don’t wear anything.

If dp bought me some I would think dementia had set in and I would be calling the doctors before New Year.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 19/11/2018 19:01

I prefer knickers that don’t rise up between my butt cheeks. Or scratchy lace that makes me itch.

I’m all for comfy knickers.

JoyceTempleSavage · 19/11/2018 19:03

Our M&S has had a big display of Gandy in his kecks for most of the year leaving very little to the imagination

What’s your thoughts on that OP?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 19/11/2018 19:07

I bet his undercrackers are comfortable though.

IStandWithPosie · 19/11/2018 19:08

Who is Gandy?

MinecraftHolmes · 19/11/2018 19:09

They actually used those words??

I think I'd be questioning my relationship with DH if he thought that "fancy little knickers" were what he should get me for Christmas. It would suggest that he didn't actually know me, or about any of my varied interests, in the slightest.

Ffs, stop the world I want to get off

MemoryOfSleep · 19/11/2018 19:15

Seriously? Men must have suits to impress. Women must have fancy little knickers? M&S- Mysogynistic and Sexist?

Very disappointed in them.
