To be livid at Marks & Spencer's sexism: 'Women Must Have Fancy Little Knickers'?

A tweet from FiLiA, along with a photo of two M&S window displays. Men's Must-Haves: Outfits To Impress. Women's Must-Haves: Fancy Little Knickers.

This would be crass enough at any time, but even more so when an Irish girl has recently been blamed for her own rape because of her lacy knickers.

I think I've set foot in M&S for the last time.

Does he actually have any nice pants? So far I have seen grey budgie smugglers and baggy white things, which would go grey and shapeless after a couple of washes?

JoyceTempleSavage · 19/11/2018 20:39

Perhaps he could swing by and let us know

AngryAttackKittens · 19/11/2018 20:42

Those last ones on Gandy were most definitely not fancy little pants (or knickers). More meant to inspire men to do crunches than to arouse women, I think.

JacquesHammer · 19/11/2018 20:44

Where is the woman next to Gandy “dressed to impress”?

I might worry more about how objectified he is when he’s clearly being compared negatively to the opposite sex.

The boardroom vs bedroom trope is so tired

EvaHarknessRose · 19/11/2018 20:46

I challenge them to reverse it and display men's underwear and women's suits together. But even that's not equal because they didn't display their practical comfortable women's underwear, and that is the only type of men's that exists.

anniehm · 19/11/2018 20:46

It's aimed at my dh, he buys me the wrong size every year, every year I take them back for more sensible and better fitting ones

AngryAttackKittens · 19/11/2018 20:50

Maybe the writing in the window should read "Thing She'll Be Returning On Boxing Day".

IStandWithPosie · 19/11/2018 20:53

Can’t wait to see their “fancy little” men’s underwear display.

IStandWithPosie · 19/11/2018 20:54

For fancy little men obviously Grin

The80sweregreat · 19/11/2018 21:08

Not any more!

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 19/11/2018 21:24

Gaudy's fancy little knickers are practically shorts.

‘Must have fancy little knickers’
Who, in the fuck thought that was a good idea?
Envy

BeautifulBlue · 19/11/2018 22:52

@IStandWithPosie Grin

TheFivePointPalmHeartOfTafiti · 19/11/2018 23:38

I thought you were talking about Ghandi, who had impressive, though not fancy, pants.

Oliversmumsarmy · 20/11/2018 00:09

Maybe the writing in the window should read "Thing She'll Be Returning On Boxing Day

I don’t think you can return knickers

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 20/11/2018 05:51
- the reference to "fancy little knickers" in this is nowhere near as offensive as the window display, because it is not placed right next to men's power wear!
shouldwestayorshouldwego · 20/11/2018 06:11

TheFivePointPalmHeartOfTafiti glad I am not the only one.

shesabloodywitch · 20/11/2018 06:13

Don't see the problem everyone gets offended about everything nowadays

AnyFucker · 20/11/2018 06:18

That window just illustrates the problem perfectly

Fully dressed men, scantily clad women.

A580Hojas · 20/11/2018 06:28

If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes I wouldn't have believed it was even possible! What the fuck are M&S doing? How did this even get through the concept stage? I'm speechless.

And what were Aldi thinking 🤔
I mean seriously a half naked man and alcohol 🙄
What ever next.

Ps the world has gone mad.
To much PC
We won't be able to set foot out of the house now with out getting offended!

Hisaishi · 20/11/2018 07:27

"Don't see the problem everyone gets offended about everything nowadays"

You don't see the problem with men needing to be fully dressed in status symbol clothing (as far as M&S can be called a status symbol) and women needing to be dressed in small, tiny knickers?

Hisaishi · 20/11/2018 07:31

crazy (your name gives me a headache)

Do you honestly not see the difference?

Women - sexy, dressed for sex, available at all times as a sexual object
Men - powerful, successful, worker (M&S version) or portrayed as a sex object in a jokey way because no one could possibly actually think women have sexual feelings towards men (Aldi version)

I know it's very de rigueur to complain about everyone being perpetually offended, but at least try to come up with a comparable example to prove your sorely lacking point.

LostontheWestway · 20/11/2018 07:52

Urgh.
My only must have from M&S is Percy pigs.

My "must have" this year is the mini PlayStation One. Am I not womaning correctly?

CrAzYmUmOf2 · 20/11/2018 08:08

Seriously not trying to make a point, I was mocking the whole situation that's all 🙄
The world 🌍 has gone bonkers.
Most women like to feel sexy, so bloody what!
Just let it lie.
I certainly don't feel like I'm been perceived as a sexual object.
And I like that red marks underwear.
And yeah crazy by name and nature, I'd hate to be boring 🙈
