To be livid at Marks & Spencer's sexism: 'Women Must Have Fancy Little Knickers'?

A tweet from FiLiA, along with a photo of two M&S window displays. Men's Must-Haves: Outfits To Impress. Women's Must-Haves: Fancy Little Knickers.

This would be crass enough at any time, but even more so when an Irish girl has recently been blamed for her own rape because of her lacy knickers.

I think I've set foot in M&S for the last time.

Yuck’s not the word that springs to my mind but anyways

C’mon OP

Is Gandy in his kecks acceptable to you

AngryAttackKittens · 19/11/2018 19:15

"No need for you to leave the house, women. Ideally you'd stay mostly in the bedroom, but don't worry, you can wear your fancy little knickers to cook in too. Tee hee!"

jacksonmaine · 19/11/2018 19:17

Yuk. Sad Just lost my Christmas shopping M&S. WTAF this is almost too odd to to be true.

53rdWay · 19/11/2018 19:20

M&S advert appearing on this screen for me right now...

Daughters in late 20s now
Each year, presents under tree, among other things they'd like, they say 'multipack big pants mum, and socks'
Ordered them from m&s yesterday.
So wish I'd gone elsewhere Sad

IStandWithPosie · 19/11/2018 19:22

Oh, never heard of him. He could do with a bra too TBH.

MinecraftHolmes · 19/11/2018 19:23

What's it Spike says in Notting Hill about "chicks dig grey"? Envy

FitzChivalryFarseer · 19/11/2018 19:26

Maybe it’s my screen resolution, but that picture of David Gandy, who is not someone I have ever heard of before, makes it look like he could do with the eponymous MN bra intervention. I’m hazarding a guess at around a 38B.

FitzChivalryFarseer · 19/11/2018 19:27

Haha @IStandWithPosie (I do too)
Cross post about him needing a bra.

IStandWithPosie · 19/11/2018 19:28

Not just you fitz! Grin

Ew fuck off M&S.

AngryAttackKittens · 19/11/2018 19:29

Don't be silly, David is clearly more of a 40.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/11/2018 19:38

That juxtaposition is truly awful. 'Impressively' dressed men, 'fancily' undressed women. Urgh.

OTOH, maybe following that dreadful rape case, it may at least be of some value for it to be realised that lacy underwear, including thongs are bog standard M&S stuff. Women commonly wear thongs to avoid VPL, not because they're expecting sex, and the comfortable high-rise style happens to have lace. Bought in multipacks as and when needed along with naice food shopping.

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 19/11/2018 19:39

Mmm. I had a lacy guauze pair once. Got a loose bit of skin caught in it. Absolute agony.
There was a camp again to stop boys trunks with gauze after a nipper got his bits caught up. Notice loose fanjo trapped in knickers hasn't been an issue. Can't believe I'm the only one.

Nice cotton bikini style for me cheers.

RebelWitchFace · 19/11/2018 19:46

From their website. There is other stuff as well, but the idea is there in black and white and fancy little knickers.

Flashingbeacon · 19/11/2018 19:50

I can’t believe someone stood in front of that window and thought “yup, men in suits, women in underwear, that’s the 2018 window”

I don’t care if people (men or women) want to wear frilly, lacey, silky pants. It’s the message. Bedroom/boardroom.

GraceMarks · 19/11/2018 19:59

It's definitely real, because the M&S near me currently has the same window display with the same creepy, pervy-old-man tagline. The word "knickers" makes my skin crawl on its own, never mind when it's preceded by the words "fancy little". Another ex-purchaser of M&S underwear here.

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 19/11/2018 19:59

Is Gandy in his kecks acceptable to you?

Not particularly. But do you genuinely not see my point or are you being disingenuous? And was this Gandy in his kecks in the underwear department or splashed all over the window as a Men's Must-Have, next to fully dressed women?

OP posts:
AngryAttackKittens · 19/11/2018 20:14

I agree, Grace, but look on the bright side, at least it's not an American shop. "Panties" is so much creepier.

GraceMarks · 19/11/2018 20:22

Fancy little panties...Envy

dementedma · 19/11/2018 20:25

I do love a fancy knicker - note the singular like "a red lip" - but they have to be large to suit my arse.
however agree that the juxtaposition of the men's must have and the women's must have items is horribly sexist and dated and down right insulting. I can't afford M&S knickers anyway so no point in boycotting

JoyceTempleSavage · 19/11/2018 20:30

He was in the main window of Trinity Leeds for several months this year I'll post the closest likeness I can find to the picture in a sec. He was larger than life and very hard to miss and the footfall outside that window is in the thousands daily

Apparently women buy half of all men's underwear so my view is that the principle they used for their Gandy campaign has been applied to their current window display. At this time of year more men than women are buying underwear as purchases are now Christmas presents rather than functional underwear

And whilst the men are popping into store for their annual underwear shopping expedition M&S are taking the opportunity to promote their men's clothing range to them in hope of some additional sales

JoyceTempleSavage · 19/11/2018 20:31

Not gratuitous in any way

Whatcanisayexceptyourewelcome · 19/11/2018 20:36

How utterly depressing (M&S, not Gandy). Also, literally my only ever 'must have' from M&S was enormous post-partum comfy pants. Definitely not knickers.
