to think this is WAY too much makeup for a 17yo?

My daughter loves celebrity interviews so just watched this:

I am really horrified at the amount of makeup they put on Mackenzie Foy. I am sure it was a makeup artist's decision and not her own choice. It doesn't even look nice, all that blue eyeshadow - she looks like a drag queen. She's only 17, basically a child. Why can't they let a (very naturally pretty) 17yo look natural? Is it any wonder so many young girls have self esteem problems about their looks if even a naturally pretty 17yo is told by the media that she has to be caked in garish, tacky makeup to look "acceptable"?

I don't know if we've been watching the same video, but that is definitely not caked in make up - if anything I'd say it's pretty mild comparing to other youtube gurus.

stopeatingthatpls · 19/11/2018 16:27

I don’t really think we’re seeing the same thing...

howabout · 19/11/2018 16:27

YABU

I was a teenager in the 80s. I still think the whole point of makeup is to go over the top with arty self expression.

Imho the "natural look" is to be avoided at all costs especially for 17 year olds. Do you have a teenage DD?

ApolloandDaphne · 19/11/2018 16:28

I honestly don't see the problem. In fact i thought you had posted the wrong video because i couldn't see a 'child caked in make-up'. I see a pretty young girl with plaits and a bit of make up. You want to have seen my electric blue eyeshadow/eye liner combo when i was that age in the 70's!

Birdsgottafly · 19/11/2018 16:29

I really like her make-up.

She's a young Woman, not a child.

You're being quite insulting. You don't get to decide what make-up look is "tacky".
It's nowhere near garish.

You don't get to decide what's acceptable, either.

Blanchedupetitpois · 19/11/2018 16:30

I think she looks fine, and if you can’t go all out with mad colours etc when you’re 17 when can you? Makeup isn’t about looking acceptable - it’s a fun form of self-expression which can be incredibly creative and artistic. I think it’s fine for teenagers to enjoy it on that basis.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 19/11/2018 16:31

Not a great fan of the blue but otherwise I think she looks fine.

And in my book a 17 year old is not a child. She is a young adult and looks appropriate for her age.

Howhot · 19/11/2018 16:31

Make up is there to have fun with and experiment. I don't see the issue.

Sparklingbrook · 19/11/2018 16:32

Acording to Wiki she's 18. I have no idea who she is but her make up looks fine to me.

Ohyesiam · 19/11/2018 16:32

That linked me to a thing with Kiera Knightly? And another young woman who seemed to have an average amount of make up on.

I like the natural look, and hate the contour, slugbrow look, but these two seemed fine.

It’s interes you say 17 is a child. Old enough to consent, old enough to marry. I’d call them a young person, not a child.

trob22 · 19/11/2018 16:34

OK I agree it is less makeup than a lot of youtube gurus do (which in my opinion is WAY WAY WAY too much) but I still think it doesn't look nice on an actress who is basically school-girl age.... I agree that makeup can be creative and a form of self expression etc and I don't have a problem at all with schoolgirls playing around with makeup but to see her in bright eyeshadow AND bright lipstick AND contouring...I just think it's sad that girls are given the message "this is what beauty should be".

I think she looks fine. 17 isn't a child Confused

MawkishTwaddle · 19/11/2018 16:35

I needed a shit ton of makeup when I was 17. No 'natural prettiness' going on on the front of my head, let me tell you.

Did my confidence and my strike rate the world of good. God bless Rimmel.

LagunaBubbles · 19/11/2018 16:36

She's not a child, she's 17!

Sparklingbrook · 19/11/2018 16:37

She was born on 10th November 2000. She's an adult. She could be in Sixth Form but not really a 'schoolgirl'.

IHaveBrilloHair · 19/11/2018 16:37

Dd wears a lot of make up and currently has purple hair, I think she looks great.

trob22 · 19/11/2018 16:38

OK maybe I am just old-fashioned but I do worry that there are no natural-looking young women in the media to be roll models for teens nowadays.

Not judging and genuine question, if you had a 17yo daughter would you be okay with her wearing makeup like that on a "normal" day? (ie not a party or something) I personally wouldn't but maybe I just have very old-fashioned tastes...

Sparklingbrook · 19/11/2018 16:38

At 15 I was wearing loads of make up and going out nightclubbing. Grin

Knittink · 19/11/2018 16:39

I'm not a fan of women feeling like they have to wear make-up, but this is an actress, practically an adult, and not exactly caked in make-up. I was expecting something much worse from your thread title. I've seen plenty of tacky and garish make-up, but this isn't it. You seem to be expecting 17 year-olds to act younger than they are.

LimitIsUp · 19/11/2018 16:40

Oh wow - she's 17 not 7. How old is your dd out of interest OP?

Sparklingbrook · 19/11/2018 16:41

She is 18!

Knittink · 19/11/2018 16:41

Yes. And I'm pretty conservative about that kind of thing, especially on little girls, but 17 is not a little girl.

WhirlyGigWhirlyGig · 19/11/2018 16:41

My dd plastered it on at that age and so did I. Perfectly normal and girls at 6th form, so aged 17/18, are allowed to wear quite a bit, even at my dd's one that was very strict.

happypoobum · 19/11/2018 16:42

Of course I would! At 17 you can't tell your DD how much make up to wear, they are finding their own way.

I haven't left the house without a full face of make up since I was 15 - shoot me!

OP do you have much younger DDs?

Abeautifulpeagreenboat · 19/11/2018 16:42

But it's not a normal day. Not unless your normal day consists of filming videos with Keira Knightley.

At 17 or 18, you'd be pretty insulted (and rightly so) if someone called you a schoolgirl.
