to think this is WAY too much makeup for a 17yo?

My daughter loves celebrity interviews so just watched this:

I am really horrified at the amount of makeup they put on Mackenzie Foy. I am sure it was a makeup artist's decision and not her own choice. It doesn't even look nice, all that blue eyeshadow - she looks like a drag queen. She's only 17, basically a child. Why can't they let a (very naturally pretty) 17yo look natural? Is it any wonder so many young girls have self esteem problems about their looks if even a naturally pretty 17yo is told by the media that she has to be caked in garish, tacky makeup to look "acceptable"?

I learned everything I know about putting on make up from Boy George.

I guess my dad’s constant disdain for too much make up and “if you were meant to have holes in your lugs you’d be born with them” re ear piercing must have made its mark subconsciously. So, no one physically stopped me but I suppose it was easier to live without the disapproval.

Buffymum · 19/11/2018 19:46

I had heather shimmer too !!
Felt v dolled up if I used some corn silk fave powder !!

Buffymum · 19/11/2018 19:47

Face . Not face !

Jackshouse · 19/11/2018 19:53

I would imagine 18 is probably the average age when women wear the most make up.

MrsStrowman · 19/11/2018 19:55

Other than the lip and eye shadow it's quite subtle, she's not exactly rocking a Kardashian look. Surprises me that colour combo is back, very eighties!

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 19/11/2018 19:55

My sixteen year old daughter dresses up as Trixie Mattel Grin that girl in the video is bare faced in comparison

takemetomars · 19/11/2018 19:59

definitely NOT too much but it is pretty awful

Passmethecrisps · 19/11/2018 19:59

She looks adorable! I teach secondary age and this girl looks very like the girl if in maybe less makeup than some.

Makeup trends come and go. I remember getting the proper stink eye from my mum for wearing eye liner.

It is not really for us to tell young adults what is ok. And if it comes down to personal taste I think she looks ace

MrsStrowman · 19/11/2018 20:01

Heather shimmer made it to the nineties too! My school were really strict on make up, if they could see it you were given a baby wipes and made to remove it. The rule was clear mascara and lip balm only, you'd get away with a little bit of black or brown mascara but not lipstick etc, there was an almost competitive thing going on with body shop lip balm pot collections. Weekends however everyone wore coffee shimmer or heather shimmer! Two shades of lippy for around sixty girls, and it didn't really suit anyone 😂

Sparklingbrook · 19/11/2018 20:05

You had to cover the lipstick with a coating of Lipcote which burnt and didn't work in keeping your lipstick in place.

SneakyGremlins · 19/11/2018 20:08

@PomBearWithoutHerOFRS so about £20 of makeup in one go then Grin

BumDisease · 19/11/2018 20:11

I still miss the Clearly Caramel lipstick from the 17 range at Boots. Think I last wore it in 1999 when I was about 14!

NotACleverName · 19/11/2018 20:15

Horrified, looks like a drag queen, garish, tacky makeup.

Were you watching a different video to the one you posted, OP? Do get a grip.

SneakyGremlins · 19/11/2018 20:17

Were you watching this, OP?

Purplejay · 19/11/2018 20:24

I think she looks lovely. It’s incredibly mean of you OP to say she looks like a drag queen! Are we even watching the same clip? At almost 18 I had been in full time work for 2 years. I was wearing lots of black eyeliner (and heather shimmer with lipcote) and going to rock clubs! My old fashioned mum probably thought I looked a sight but she let me get on with it. If I had a DD that age, I am pretty sure the only comments on her make up would be complimentary.

AlexanderHamilton · 19/11/2018 20:27

I have a 17 year old Dd training to be a performer. She goes to college in a lot more make up than that. Granted her eye shadow is more natural but she wears full foundation, mascara & red lipstick daily.

1poppy1 · 19/11/2018 20:32

I read the title and thought - there is no such thing as too much make up for a 17 year old. Teenagers generally like to experiment with how they look and make up is a conventional way for them to do so. My 16 year old daughter went out wearing a full face of make up earlier, it's fine with me.

I don't wear much make up but my daughter's always been interested in it. She can do great stage make up that she has learnt from Youtube. Again, this is fine with me. Her brother likes to watch Youtubers talking about computer games, can't really see the difference, all pretty harmless fun.

Both my kids have other interests too but watching their contemporaries play with make up / computer games online, surely is similar to watching sport or soaps on TV, as we probably did when teenagers.

TheWiseWomansFear · 19/11/2018 20:36

You're a bit odd, she looks nice. It's bright and fun - only teenagers and drag queens can pull that off as well.

Passmethecrisps · 19/11/2018 20:45

Heather shimmer! That was my first lipstick. I thought I was the bees knees in that.

I was chatting to a girl the other day who had fantastic amounts of makeup including sparkly eyeshadow in copious amounts and voluminous false eyeshadow. I was completely distracted from the conversation by wondering how long it had taken her to put on.

I did think:
Cripes! How long did that take?
I wonder if all those products are hypoallergenic
I’ll bet her pillow cases are a right old mess.

I did not think:
Shock horror! Outrageous. It shouldn’t be allowed

Because it’s her face

Buffymum · 19/11/2018 20:46

Sparkingbrook - yes the lipcote burn !! Think I persevered with that well into my 20 ‘s.

Have just what’s apped my school friends the heather shimmer picture . Happy days Smile

VickieCherry · 19/11/2018 20:54

Lipcote was evil stuff. Thank goodness for advances in lipstick technology! Grin

TheWiseWomansFear · 19/11/2018 20:59

And, yes. I would be fine with my (imaginary) daughter wearing that makeup day to day - so long as it was in school rules.
I wear very bright and very dark lipsticks all the time...

Sparklingbrook · 19/11/2018 20:59

Literally no chance of a snog with a layer of Heather Shimmer and Lipcote. Plus the chance of poor man being asphyxiated by the waft of Body Shop White Musk. Grin
Although he was probably drowned in Kouros.
