to think this is WAY too much makeup for a 17yo?

My daughter loves celebrity interviews so just watched this:

I am really horrified at the amount of makeup they put on Mackenzie Foy. I am sure it was a makeup artist's decision and not her own choice. It doesn't even look nice, all that blue eyeshadow - she looks like a drag queen. She's only 17, basically a child. Why can't they let a (very naturally pretty) 17yo look natural? Is it any wonder so many young girls have self esteem problems about their looks if even a naturally pretty 17yo is told by the media that she has to be caked in garish, tacky makeup to look "acceptable"?

I think she looks much better than some of the 15 year old girls in dd’s class and is wearing less make-up than some of them wear to school every day.
I think her make-up looks lovely and I’d let 15 year old ds wear it if she could be bothered getting up every day and doing it. God I’d be delighted in fact it meant she was getting up in the morning not being dragged out of bed.

GerdaLovesLiIi · 19/11/2018 17:11

How much make-up does your 24yo daughter wear? Does she have different tastes to you?

If you don't like the make-up on a youtube video (presumably not designed to appeal to he mother of a 24 year old) then don't wear it. Simples.

Aragog · 19/11/2018 17:13

Looks a lot better than some of the 'too orange' badly applied make up with the massive black eye brows you see some teens wearing.

She is 17/18y and at work in her role as an actress, appearing on screen. Of course she is wearing make up! It's not some young child heading down to the park! Its not even a mid teen heading into town for the afternoon with mates. She is working in an environment where she will be filmed and photographed all day.

And FWIW it looks to be nice well applied make up, and although the blue eyes are quite bright, the rest seems fairly subtle and light.

Would I allow 16y Dd to wear make up every day? Yes, if she chooses to. As it is she wears very little for school, and not that much the rest of the time. She only really applies more for special occasions, but I don't 'ban' her from doing so at other times. Its her face, her choice. Would she wear make up more in this kind of role? Of course!

Oh, and growing up int he 80s my teenage make up would have been far more extreme at times!

Raven88 · 19/11/2018 17:14

People wear make up on camera because the lights are quite harsh and pick up on the tiniest imperfection.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 19/11/2018 17:18

God lighten up. Surely your teens are for experimenting with makeup???

Every single one of my friends has gone through the same process: questionable cake face in our teens, very little in our 20s and now we're in our 30s most of us have a happy medium except me, I rock rainbow eye looks on the daily but I have no shame. Makeup should be fun. Whether that's none at all, heavy contour and Insta brows.. it doesn't matter. It's not on your face!

WorraLiberty · 19/11/2018 17:20

I suspect the OP was too busy running through fields of wheat at that age, so didn't have time to worry about make-up Grin

Sparklesocks · 19/11/2018 17:21

She’s just having a bit of fun. She’s 17 and trying out new looks and styles.

I think it’s a bit mean spirited to make a thread about her.

Gaspodethetalkingdog · 19/11/2018 17:21

She looks fine, most young females love experimenting with make up, it will wash off in the shower. Tattoos on the other hand ...

Loonoon · 19/11/2018 17:22

I think she looks lovely and totally age appropriate. If you stand outside any secondary school or 6th form college you will see plenty of 17/18 girls wearing a lot more make up than that!

SneakyGremlins · 19/11/2018 17:22

some drag queens have decent make up these days

RyderWhiteSwan · 19/11/2018 17:30

@ ApolloandDaphne mine was green and yellow 'Panda Eyes' Grin

wrenika · 19/11/2018 17:30

You must be watching another video if you think that looks like drag queen makeup! Other than the blue eyeshadow, which is a weird choice but meh, the rest of her makeup is pretty natural and elegant.

Drag, on the other hand, is far brighter and a lot more fun! :P

EdisonLightBulb · 19/11/2018 17:34

At 17 she is likely at college or in sixth form or maybe even WORKING, if you don't have a 17 year old you are in for a learning curve. Hell she could already have been having sex for a year and be filling in her UCAS form.

17 is not 7

festivellama · 19/11/2018 17:35

FWIW I'd be more concerned about children watching loads of celebrity interviews, hey ho.

How old is your dd OP?

Fresta · 19/11/2018 17:36

Have you seen many teenage girls in real life? At least she's not orange with massive black eyebrows and huge eyeliner flicks like all the teens round here!

Oakenbeach · 19/11/2018 17:37

Ffs, if you can’t wear make-up like that at 17, what age can you?

Applepudding2018 · 19/11/2018 17:38

I think the main issue with that video is the plaits that are making the girl look as if she's meant to be about 7.

Surely age 17/18 is the time of your life when you do experiment with make up? Or actually even younger?

AGHHHH · 19/11/2018 17:40

Define "too much" and why there is a restriction on something as harmless as makeup? As long as it's her own choice, it's nothing to do with ANYONE.

diddl · 19/11/2018 17:43

I think that it just looks so overdone compared to KK.

Member · 19/11/2018 17:44

Not too keen on the colours tbh but don’t think it’s caked on.

My 17 yr old dd wears foundation, false lashes/mascara/eyeliner & eyeshadow to sixth form on a daily basis (thankfully she’s toned down the eyebrows since she started with the lashes & doesn’t seem to have adopted contouring).

I was only allowed minimal make up for going out at her age and never got into the routine of wearing it daily.

Bluesmartiesarebest · 19/11/2018 17:46

There’s no orange foundation, caterpillar eyebrows or brown contouring going on so it looks fine to me.

I grew up during the punk era so my make up was very weird Smile

FearLoveAndTheTimeMachine · 19/11/2018 17:52

She looks great and I love the way this thread has gone. She’s almost a grown woman, she can do what she likes to her face. At 14 I was clubbing and wearing whatever makeup I fancied every day! Times change OP, stop being catty.

FearLoveAndTheTimeMachine · 19/11/2018 17:53

I was only allowed minimal make up for going out at her age and never got into the routine of wearing it daily.

What do you mean ‘allowed’? How could a parent ‘allow’ or ‘not allow’ anything by the age of seventeen? I’m genuinely curious as to how that works?

SerenDippitty · 19/11/2018 18:04

YABU. In my experience, a lot of people wear far more make-up when they are younger than later in life just because they are exploring it.. It’s fun, it’s self expression, playing with fashion and different looks.

I’m in my 50s and wear more make up now than I did as a teenager. I wasn’t a “normal” teenager though Sad

TheFuckfaceWhisperer · 19/11/2018 18:13

I wore green mascara and green eyeliner(until a boyfriend told me I look like a frog) and Twilight Teaser lipstick.

Plus, she's not 17, she's 18! An adult!!
