to think this is WAY too much makeup for a 17yo?

My daughter loves celebrity interviews so just watched this:

I am really horrified at the amount of makeup they put on Mackenzie Foy. I am sure it was a makeup artist's decision and not her own choice. It doesn't even look nice, all that blue eyeshadow - she looks like a drag queen. She's only 17, basically a child. Why can't they let a (very naturally pretty) 17yo look natural? Is it any wonder so many young girls have self esteem problems about their looks if even a naturally pretty 17yo is told by the media that she has to be caked in garish, tacky makeup to look "acceptable"?

OP posts:

And just to say, even if it was a normal day, yes, that amount of makeup would be fine.

ApolloandDaphne · 19/11/2018 16:44

I have 2 grown up DDs and i never policed their make up after about age 13/14. DD1 liked heavy make up for a while but now, in her mid 20's is more natural and DD2 has always worn very light make up.

Buffymum · 19/11/2018 16:46

Is amazing compared to the heavy mascara and deep red lipstick I wore at that age , which was actually an improvement on electric blue mascara , electric blue eyeliner and baby shrimp lipstick Grin
I ask My 15 dd to do my makeup for a ‘do’ as she like lots her age , is vvv good at it . She loves makeup and it’s application but is very confident with body image etc as does sports that she wouldn’t dream of wearing make up for .
She and her group of friends are way more body confident than my friends were at same age .

Sparklingbrook · 19/11/2018 16:48

Blue mascara and eye liner, I used to wear it all the time. Grin And Heather Shimmer lippy.

SerendipityFelix · 19/11/2018 16:48

I’m on the fence here on the one hand OP I agree with you that she definitely has a lot of make up on in that video - but as some of the responses on this thread show, a lot of makeup is fairly normalised now and she’s basically on telly so is going to have more makeup on than going to college or at home etc. And choicey choice.

Almondcandle · 19/11/2018 16:49

It is an appropriate amount of makeup for a normal day.

Breakyourselfagainstmystones · 19/11/2018 16:52

That young woman looks beautiful and is wearing a lot less the I did in the 90s.

Pure white face, black eyeshadow, black eyeliner, practically a tube of mascara a day and good old black cherries lipstick that needed to be applied at least every 18 seconds. Between that on my face, by black vest top and tartan hanky skirt and my platform trainers I must have looked ridiculous. Teenaged years are about experimenting.

I wish I looked as glam as she does.

SpiritedLondon · 19/11/2018 16:54

I think it looks fine for “ on screen” which is obviously what it is intended for. It’s difficult to judge make up for day to day with on screen make up though. I think a lot of current make up trends are designed to look good in selfies for social media but don’t work so well in real life....but I know I wore a lot of dubious multicoloured trends in the 80s so am not in a position to judge.

howabout · 19/11/2018 16:55

I'm another fan of electric blue mascara and matching eyeliner - oh for the youthful looks to still carry it off.

daisypond · 19/11/2018 16:56

She looks fine to me. Of course she's going to put on makeup for a video.

Missingstreetlife · 19/11/2018 16:57

I wouldn't leave the house without false eyelashes. I washed up in a cafe at weekends and holidays, up to my elbows in hot soapy water and great plates. I must have looked fab

HappyGoodHairBear · 19/11/2018 16:58

YABU. In my experience, a lot of people wear far more make-up when they are younger than later in life just because they are exploring it.. It’s fun, it’s self expression, playing with fashion and different looks.

tabulahrasa · 19/11/2018 16:59

My DD wears more than that... I mean half the time it looks terrible, but she likes it.

If you can’t wear too much make up and bright colours as a teenager, when can you?

TheMerryWidow1 · 19/11/2018 16:59

Blue mascara and eye liner, I used to wear it all the time. grin And Heather Shimmer lippy.

OrgyofSausages · 19/11/2018 17:00

"she looks like a drag queen".

No she doesn't remotely resemble a 'drag queen'. You sound a bit jealous, OP.

TheMerryWidow1 · 19/11/2018 17:01

Blue mascara and eye liner, I used to wear it all the time. grin And Heather Shimmer lippy - aaaaah the good old days!!! lol

Sparklingbrook · 19/11/2018 17:02

The 80s were the best Merry. Grin

WorraLiberty · 19/11/2018 17:02

Why are you assuming she has no control over the amount of make up she wants to wear? Confused

I knew my own mind very much at 17 and so did most of my friends.

We didn't always get the 'look' right, but we wouldn't have let anyone else dictate to us.

Give the young woman some credit.

helpfulperson · 19/11/2018 17:04

I wonder if your views are shaped by what was in vogue when you were that age. I was that age in the mid-eighties and the men were wearing that much make up (Adam Ant, New Romantics. Duran Duran etc.) never mind the women.

I also have fond memories of Heather Shimmer, blue or green mascara/eyeliner etc. And I haven't worn make up in the last 30 years. Couldn't be bothered once I started work.

dodobookends · 19/11/2018 17:05

She's a young adult, not a child. She's old enough to drive, get married or join the armed forces.

In any case, stage make-up is always more prominent than usual, it has to be stronger or you look totally washed out under the lights.

Mummyoflittledragon · 19/11/2018 17:07

My make up was a lot heavier than that at 16. By 18 I was wearing a more “normal” look. I’m baffled by your judgmental post.

CircleofWillis · 19/11/2018 17:07

I don't wear make-up myself but I think she looks fresh and pretty.

twattymctwatterson · 19/11/2018 17:07

You are being a bit ridiculous. She's an adult (actually 18) and is made up like that in relation to her job

menstrualcup · 19/11/2018 17:07

Looks far better than the orange cake line and thick black eyebrows drawn on I see on more teens!

I think she's fine and looks lovely tbh

VickieCherry · 19/11/2018 17:08

You should've seen me at 17 Grin I was a goth, plastered in make up was my basic look. Nights out involved more eyeliner and glitter than you'd think possible.

She looks fine. I don't like the blue but assume it's fashionable at the moment. Other than that she looks like a normal, pretty young woman, and I'd be absolutely fine with my daughter looking like that.

How old are you OP, out of interest? I can't imagine anyone who was, say, young in the 80s thinking that was a lot of make up!
