Meeting Your Idols and Being Disappointed

Today I almost met somebody who has been a big figure in my life. It took ages to pluck up the courage to speak to them and I was totally dismissed. I wasn’t being a “gushing fan” and it was a setting that was laid back. Everyone else was lovely. Have tou ever met someone you admire and wish you hadn’t?

Served Chris Tarrant a tea when I was 16. Weirdly, he didn't make eye contact but wasn't unpleasant or anything. Do remember seeing his daughters (I presume) sort of standing in a huddle giving me the once over/weird look which did make me feel uncomfortable. Perhaps I was being paranoid.

giordano · 20/11/2018 13:27

^not exactly an ideal though Grin

IchWill · 20/11/2018 13:38

@JustLetMeStapleTheVicar

I know exactly who you're talking about and I'm so saddened to hear that. As he gives me the fanny gallops too!

I've seen on band fab FB groups he's described as a drama queen, so I'm inclined to believe you, albeit I'm disappointed. 😭

MickHucknallspinkpancakes · 20/11/2018 13:43

Roger Federer also a lovely lovely guy. He's seen out and about a lot here and always takes time for photos and a chat.

YY to Ainsley Harriot - he used to use a gym near my old workplace and I used to see him quite often when I popped to Sainsbury's in my lunch hour. I remember once a lady leaning out of her upstairs window shouting "we love you Ainsley man" and he smiled and waved and said "love you too" Grin

A family member worked with David Tennant and said he was a lovely guy, making the whole crew tea as soon as he arrived on set.

Another mate of mine got chatting to Tom Cruise in Kensington once, apparently he was very open and friendly, talking about the film he was there to make.

JustLetMeStapleTheVicar · 20/11/2018 13:44

IchWill, I understand your disappointment, and 'drama queen' is entirely accurate! He turns on the charm during interviews, but he's insufferable at close quarters - the arguments he causes with the rest of the band have to be seen to be believed.

I remember when he eBayed his old Mercedes. The footwell mats were actually embossed/embroidered (whatever way they do it with carpets) with HIS OWN FACE.

MickHucknallspinkpancakes · 20/11/2018 13:49

I really want to know who the German band is, I'm clueless. 😂😂😂

AdobeWanKenobi · 20/11/2018 13:53

Reminds me. When ds was little I spent a lovely hour chatting with a lad I thought I knew from school at soft play. Our Kids had a fab time.
In the car on the way home I was mortified to reliase it was Nick Picard from Hollyoaks.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 20/11/2018 13:53

(Googles German metal band...)

AdobeWanKenobi · 20/11/2018 13:54

To be fair I can't think of more than one German metal band so I'm guessing it's a case of it you know them you know them.

One hell of a live show though!

JustLetMeStapleTheVicar · 20/11/2018 13:58

Adobe, I must admit there were more than a few occasions when I hoped there'd be a flamethrower malfunction in The Dick's general direction Grin

Bluebell878275 · 20/11/2018 13:59

Angela Lansbury. A total and utter delight. Your favourite (slightly cheeky) aunt combined with your adored grandmother. Naughty sense of humour, loves rude jokes and dropping the f-bomb, and the energy of a woman 20 years younger

Oh I'm so pleased she's lovely - she's always reminded me of my nanny - especially in Mrs. 'arris goes to Paris. She's like a warm cuddly blanket Smile

Bluebell878275 · 20/11/2018 14:01

I'm guessing IchWill might be a clue??

JustLetMeStapleTheVicar · 20/11/2018 14:03

You got it Bluebell!

Vampiratequeen · 20/11/2018 14:03

I went to the Good Food Show when I was secondary school and Jamie Oliver was there singing autographs, we queued for a good hour and when we got to the front a woman took the pieces of paper me and my friend wanted the autographs on and took them to him and we collected them as we left, never said hi or even acknowledged anyone.
Anthony Warrell Thompson on the other hand was lovely. It wasn't a queue, you just stood around where he was, he talked to everyone and we had a right laugh with him.

I was also vv disappointed when I met Tony Robinson, me, my DM and my DF had gone to see him live and he was doing autographs at the end, he was very short with everyone, didn't talk other than to ask your name, he was really rude.

FuckKnuckle · 20/11/2018 14:04

DH met David Jason at a works do - nice enough bloke, but a bit of an old letch, apparently.

Russell Howard was lovely to my adult DCs - I think he liked DD, as in the photo you can see how tightly he's holding her against him! She was heartbroken, obviously...

Met Bowling for Soup a number of times. They were all gorgeous, give the best hugs, and Jaret smells divine Smile

Chris Jay (Army of Freshmen) is lovely, the rest of the band, not so much.

IchWill · 20/11/2018 14:06

@Bluebell878275 you'd be guessing right.

@JustLetMeStapleTheVicar he sound horrid. Very much a vain man and a large ego.

I heard recently he was talking about leaving the band, but has made this empty threat multiple times.

The car mats story cracked me up. 😅

Ah well, seeing them live for the third time next year. Good job I love them as a band and admire their music, as having eye candy on guitar was just an added bonus.

Bluebell878275 · 20/11/2018 14:06

You got it Bluebell

Yay - I won Smile Smile

MinesaPinot · 20/11/2018 14:07

I have absolutely no idea who the German metal band are.

I stood on Phil (Thin Lizzy) Lynott's toe once. He was very smiley and gracious about it.

I saw Judi Dench on the steps of the Apollo Hammersmith after a show one evening and went over and told her how much I'd enjoyed her performance in A Little Night Music at the National to which DH had taken me for my birthday. Absolutely lovely and seemed really pleased to be thanked.

I also saw Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen at Gatwick once with his two daughters. He was very smiley and nice to people who spoke to him.

DoingMyBest2010 · 20/11/2018 14:07

I worked with Jeffrey Archer on an event. He told me on the phone "right young lady, grab a pen and take notes". In the flesh he was ok actually, just very pompous.

Nicola Horlick (the City's "wonderwoman") was lovely in person, though I can imagine on the workfloor, she is tough as nails.

HRM the Duke of York....well....he scratched his balls when he came out the lift at work. I was cured of being in awe right away.

puzzledlady · 20/11/2018 14:08

A very good friends mother works for Jools Holland and apparently he is the loveliest guy you will ever meet. Very kind and friendly.

MickHucknallspinkpancakes · 20/11/2018 14:14

Ah @Bluebell878275 Du Hast (es)?

JustLetMeStapleTheVicar · 20/11/2018 14:20

IchWill, he's more likely to get kicked out than to leave Grin I just wish he'd knock his other band on the head, Christ they're awful. Plus he adds a whole other dimension to the term 'vanity project'!

pumpastrotter · 20/11/2018 14:23

@JustLetMeStapleTheVicar - I always liked the singer! might have had a twinge then

MillicentSnitch · 20/11/2018 14:28

Mary Portas. I wouldn't say I was a fan but I admired her achievements. Then got into one of those brief dog-owners' encounters when our dogs started playing while we were both sheltering from the rain under a tree. Pretty much 100 per cent of dog owners would have at least smiled at each other and exchanged a few pleasantries, but she went absolutely out of her way to avoid eye contact, even when it got embarrassing.

JustLetMeStapleTheVicar · 20/11/2018 14:30

Hahahaha pumpastrotter, did your fanny break into a brisk trot, or was it more of a canter? Grin

For the record, he's lovely - quite shy, gentlemanly but with a filthy sense of humour, and smells divine. Plus he's got the perfect 'bedtime story' speaking voice although stories were the last thing on my mind when I first met him Wink
