Today I almost met somebody who has been a big figure in my life. It took ages to pluck up the courage to speak to them and I was totally dismissed. I wasn’t being a “gushing fan” and it was a setting that was laid back. Everyone else was lovely. Have tou ever met someone you admire and wish you hadn’t?

@GoldenCurls Which one was it? I must know! Grin

Pinkginxx · 19/11/2018 23:02

Went to a Tony Robinson book signing for his autobiography. Asked him if there were any rude bits in it as wanted to give it to a 10 year old who was a big time team fan. He advised it might not be appropriate, then asked his assistant to dig out one of his children’s books from out the back which he then signed and gave it to me for free.
Super charming man Smile

Needtomoveon12 · 19/11/2018 23:21

Not an idol at all lol but twice seen Dev from Corrie....
First time was in Trafford centre he was in a restaurant having a drink and giving everyone looking at him dirty looks even though he was sat in the window so everyone could see him when they walked past!!
Second time wasn’t that long ago actually on a Sunday afternoon he was randomly stood in Liverpool ones car park with a suitcase (must have been waiting for someone) my window in car was down and as we drove past I said to my partner ‘that looks like dev from corrie’ He looked over with a massive smug grin on his face as if he loved being spotted, ergh.....

Seen Rylan he’s a sweetheart.....

Can’t think of anymore but I will be back when I do! Love these threads!!

Lovejoyfull · 19/11/2018 23:24

I was in a well known sandwich chain Covent Garden with my dc and could not find a spare table that could seat us all together. I told my eldest two to sit at the table in the window and was going to stand and wait with my youngest. This woman spotted me clearly looking harassed and kindly got up and told me to take her table. I realised immediately it was Nicola Walker who I actually have a bit of a girl crush on but at the time I was more grateful to get a table 😂. Total sweetheart.

shalda · 19/11/2018 23:26

A famous actor (shouldn't really say who) in an after club party.

Asked him for a photo, he's said no as he'd taken "waaaay too much mdma"

Lovejoyfull · 19/11/2018 23:29

Urgh Dev from Corrie, he used to live on the same street as my mum. He gives everyone dirty looks but obviously wants to be noticed. I had no idea who he was as I do not watch the soaps but on the rare occasion I saw him he would act very self aware, with a sneer on hos face.

Becky11 · 19/11/2018 23:30

Sophie Ellis Bextor - very lovely
Simon Le Bon - lovely
Jack Dee - really nice and so was his wife
Ruby Wax - awful. Loud and obnoxious
Alan Davies - arrogant twat. People that work with him, really dislike him
Hermione Norris - diva

AyoadesChinDimple · 19/11/2018 23:31

Sorry to report that David Jason was quite a twat to a young boy who asked for his autograph years ago when he was filming in Yorkshire.

Eddie Izzard had a face on at a comedy gig we were at, he spoke to my friend but didn't laugh once at the jokes. Afterwards me and my friend were coming out of a pub, saw Izzard again and he was with Dylan Moran (whose gig it was) and he- Moran was lovely but slightly terrified when I told him I loved him.
Favourite comedian ever is Tom Stade and he was gorgeous after a gig.
Ainsley Harriot friendly and loud
Jamie Rednapp and Phil Babb were lovely. Robbie Fowler- bit snooty

Chesneyhawkes1 · 19/11/2018 23:33

Paul Weller at West Hampstead tube station, was off to see the Stereophonics the same as us. He was lovely.

William Fox-Pitt, was also lovely and chatty.
He was in my local Little Chef on the way to Badminton.

Lovejoyfull · 19/11/2018 23:39

I have remembered another one. Years ago my then young ds was staring out of the window and Neil Morrissey walked past. He started waving and pulling funny faces at my son. Seemed like a nice guy.

A friend bumped into Jonathan Ross and started a conversation about comics and music. Apparently they had a long chat and he was very charming. I think it depends on what mood you catch them in and if you’re interesting or nice yourself.

funkylittleboatrace · 19/11/2018 23:51

Judge Jules total nob

Clarissa111 · 20/11/2018 00:23

Adam Woodyatt aka Ian Beale. My daughters met him and a few other soap stars at a charity football match. All the others (can remember Aaron Dingle from emmerdale and Finn Sharkey from Waterloo road, but others too) were lovely. But Adam was moody and miserable. I did say maybe he was having a bad day. Until my cousin told me she used to deliver shopping to him and he was always the same.

EarlyModernParent · 20/11/2018 00:34

Alan Shearer. Was doing an appearance to present a prize and was so unpleasant.

Adrian Chiles. Glowered at DH for no reason DH could discern-DH hadn't even spoken to him.

Sir Philip Green: did the whole looking to see who noticed him thing and smirked while being peremptory with his entourage.

Bouncingbelle · 20/11/2018 01:18

David walliams is very polite & stuck by an agreement to attend a charity engagement the day after he swam the channel.
Evan dando (i was a 90s kid!) Is lovely and so very unassuming
Ewan mcgregor, met him on several.occasions, v friendly
Katherine jenkins - total bitch

Bouncingbelle · 20/11/2018 01:19

Also went to uni with comedian Ed Byrne. Totally hilarious, genuine lovely guy.

alltoomuchrightnow · 20/11/2018 01:35

I've worked in radio in the past, and DP works in music. He's worked with some really big names and says by far the nicest are Tina Turner, and David Furnish (Mr Elton John). And he got on well with Grace Jones although others found her terrifying! Bonnie Tyler is an absolute hoot and a great employer. (in fact she's just saved our bacon as we've been able to pay a big bill!)
For me... the best have been Jeremy Irons, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, Pam St Clement, June Brown, Luisa Bradshaw-White, Pete Murray, James Whale, Craig McClachlan.
Met Kylie a few times ( was only a teenager then, so in a fan and not work capacity) and she was pretty rude one of the times which was gutting as I was such a fan. It wasn't even in a fan setting so not like she was being crowded by people. However I realise everyone has their off days. But it did put me off as I'd never be rude like that to a young girl who just wanted a quick autograph.
Michael Winner was a shocker as you'd expect , but then I wasn't disappointed as wasn't a fan!
Out of the above it was Kylie and Pierce I was already a huge fan of, so def a mixed bag there. Oh he also kissed me and he smells AMAZING!

alltoomuchrightnow · 20/11/2018 01:37

re Adam Woodyatt, that is my experience too, in fact sometimes I used to see him almost daily. He really was a miserable bugger to everyone

alltoomuchrightnow · 20/11/2018 01:39

ah I forgot about Toyah , I was a huge fan as a child.
Anyway years later I got to work with her one afternoon.
Absolutely lovely, a real sweetheart

alltoomuchrightnow · 20/11/2018 01:46

I've forgotten..
Chas and Dave.. just lovely, humble, down to earth, hilarious, thanked everyone from cleaners to kitchen staff, as did Mike Reid (the comedian) In fact I was working in said kitchen, as a teen, and they both chased me with the mop !
In my list from earlier, I won't say which person but when my shop got burgled one of them was visiting as a customer and actually stayed with me for hours (we'd both arrived at opening to find shop broken into) They weren't working then and is now on TV a huge amount.

I was a huge Wham! fan and Shirlie from Wham! was also one of my customers and she was lovely. I've met some really big names but she meant more to me because of my teen adoration to Wham!

cleanasawhistle · 20/11/2018 01:50

Met Christopher Quentin years ago and he was lovely.

I met Denise Welsh after watching Calender Girls a couple of weeks ago.I actually thought she was chatting to fans so went and stood near her...she said can I help and I asked to have my picture taken with her,she said of course. It was only when she referred to the lady who was taking the picture by name that I realised she had been stood chatting to friends. She was smiley and very pretty but not chatty.....but I dont hold that against her because I had interupted her....I felt mortified when I walked away.

MowtownJunk · 20/11/2018 02:00

Not my idols (bar Chas Hodges), but I've met a lot of people as I work in the media with music.

I’ve been surprised both in a good way and bad way.

Here’s some I recall:

Finley Quaye
Nice as pie in the interview, but an absolute tool when the camera stopped rolling. He believed he was much bigger and talented than he actually was. He was demanding, rude, arrogant and full of himself. He kept disappearing off stage mid show to ‘go to the toilet’, leaving the session musicians still playing onstage looking bemused. He also smoked a joint onstage, soooo rock and roll!

Scouting for Girls
An interviewer’s dream. They were funny, charming, chatty, really lovely and down to earth. Even offered me gin from their rider!

The Wurzels
Interviewed them year before last, they were adorable, very cheeky, offered us food and drink from their rider (we politely declined) and they even randomly made a joke onstage that my boyfriend had proposed to me! No idea why, but our mates fell for it too!

Stereophonics
I interviewed them before they were big, Stuart the drummer (RIP) was a total sweetheart, but Kelly the lead singer, completely up his own backside and very arrogant, rude and acted like he was above us.

Jim Davidson
I appeared on Big Break, aged 19. In the bumph from the production team, there was a stipulation that female contestants MUST wear a dress or skirt! When Jim came to sit by me for the intros he made comments about my “nice legs”, then looked me up and down and turned around to the other female contestant and male contestant and said “She’s won, not you!” pointing at me. He then slid off his chair in a ‘comedy’ fashion and you see my crossing my legs so he didn’t see up my skirt from the floor, this was all aired.

After the show (which I did win BTW!) we were all in the green room for a buffet, drinks and to mingle with everyone, Jim and John Virgo included. John was a total diamond, incredibly sweet and down to earth, a really lovely man.

I couldn’t stay, as I had to be at a gig in Camden and the BBC had put on a car for me to get there, so I went up to Jim for a photo before I left and he said he was really tired after filming all day and if I wanted a photo, I would have to sit on his lap, as he wasn’t getting up. So I somewhere have a pic of me gingerly perched on his knee, looking slightly worried!

Howard Marks
Really warm, engaging. Intelligent and funny. The second time I met him, he remembered me too.

Chas and Dave
Consummate professionals, talented, charming, funny and gracious. Great story tellers. Just adorable and humble.

Chris Moyles
I worked with him before he was famous and he was so arrogant and full of himself back then, acted like God’s gift around women. I am talking 25 years ago too! Put me right off him after that.

Manic Street Preachers
I have met all of the Manics a few times, Including Richey, he was so sweet, softly spoken and had time for all the fans. Nicky has seemed aloof on the occasions I have met him, but not unpleasant, just wasn’t that interested in chatting to people.

Sean is really sweet and chatty and James I’ve sat up drinking with him and the Super Furry Animals and tour crew on a Manics tour and that particular night he seemed agitated and was being quite short with people, sort of like he was there socialising in body but really not in the mood in mind. I was gutted as he was my hero, however, I have met him other times and he seemed very sweet, so must have been a bad day!

Johnny Borrrell (Razorlight)
I was interviewing bands at a festival and was told Razorlight weren’t doing press. So as I had just done my last interview, I hit the bar to play catch up with my friends. However, I hit the bar too hard and got VERY drunk during Razorlight’s headline set.

Just as the set was ending. My phone rang, it was a PR person for the band, saying Johnny would give me a 5 minute interview. I was so drunk, I could barely stand, let alone speak, I was slurring, kept repeating myself and the questions, Johnny looked bemused, but was very patient and didn’t react, bless him.

I can’t bring myself to ever listen to the interview, it’s cringe worthy, I edited down so that you only hear me slur one question, then Johnny talks for four minutes! Hahaha!

Chris Jericho (Wrestler and lead singer of Fozzy)
Pleasant enough, but a tinge of arrogance and talking about his band like they were the bloody Rolling Stones.

Paddy Considine (Peaky Blinders etc.)
Charming, softly spoken and friendly.

Dick and Dom
So funny, really nice and chatty, vile PR person though.

Oh and my friend worked for Katie Price years ago and said she had absolutely zero redeeming features in her personality. She was demanding, rude, arrogant, didn’t have the words please and thank you in her vocabulary.

OrbitalShine · 20/11/2018 02:10

Feeder
The nicest blokes you could meet. All three of them were always delightful.

The Doctor from Doctor and the Medics
Utterly charming and down to earth.

Andy Bush (Absolute Radio DJ)
Friendly and approachable.

Ainsley Harriett
Funny and sweet.

Alison Hammond
Soooo lovely,. years avpy she was in a restaurant we were in, it was pretty empty in there and I waited until she was leaving to say hello and ask if she's mind a photo as I loved her in Big Brother, turned out she was on a date, but she and her date came over to our table and she happily had a photo. She was such a warm and lovely natured lady. You'd want her as your friend.

alltoomuchrightnow · 20/11/2018 02:18

John Diamond was so rude to me when I was a young intern. However when he was ill and then died I was incredibly sad for him and family (I did meet him years before he got cancer)

DP is actually friends with Jim Davison, they both shared a very close mutual friend who sadly died . DP says he's incredibly funny, witty and generous (obviously not at all PC) but he annoys me so much I keep avoiding social occasions where I'd have to meet him. Sooner or later I'm going to have to but I can't even stand to see his face on tv!

PomPomtheGreat · 20/11/2018 03:30

My Dad told me a sad story once. He was a child in Manchester when they heard Danny Kaye was coming to the UK to film, arriving in Manchester late that evening. He and another twelve year old friend cycled miles in the cold and the pouring rain just to see him. He came out, ignored all the eager little faces and slumped back in his limo as he was driven away. Not even a wave. I won't watch White Christmas anymore in solidarity!

At least he got to go on a cycling holiday a few years later with his schoolmate Norman Foster. That one has really helped me with my six degrees of separation. That and my MIL meeting Princess Di!

strawberrisc · 20/11/2018 03:34

Wow I forgot I had posted this thread. Just to let you know this was a paid for event in an intimate setting. The person was meant to be introducing at every 30 minutes or so but for the rest of the time sat with his back to the very small audience.

It’s lovely to know that Caroline Aherne was lovely I absolutely adored all of her work and feel so sad that there will be no more comedy from her. I’ve also met Samantha Womack, Pete Price (!), Jamie Carragher and Stephen Graham. They were all lovely.
