To ask where I can buy the warmest possible winter coat

Unsure72 · 18/11/2018 16:41

It's freezing down my way tonight and my ancient, woollen winter coat just doesn't cut it when it comes to keeping out the cold. I want a coat that will keep me super warm and toasty all winter so I don't dread leaving the house! Looking like I'm not dressed in a duvet would be a bonus, but is definitely not essential.

If anyone has any recommendations I would love to hear them!

Antigon

FYI

Poloshot · 19/11/2018 10:44

If people want to wear Canada goose it's no one else's business

adaline · 19/11/2018 10:44

@Antigon have you never heard of Um Bongo? It's a drink and the username is from the jingle!

Antigon · 19/11/2018 10:52

Um Bongo had a racist as campaign in the 80s. I think it's still offensive.

bellsbuss · 19/11/2018 11:02

I've got the Canada goose Kensington and I love it, it's the warmest coat I've ever had.

3WildOnes · 19/11/2018 11:08

The down from Canada goose coats is a by product of the meat industry and therefore not live plucked.

VenusOfWillendorf · 19/11/2018 11:33

I have a Seasalt Janelle coat, and find it great - as its fully waterproof and windproof as well as quilted. It also goes to just below my knees which I find great when waiting for the train on a freezing morning (like this morning).

I find my ski jacket is a bit too short worn with normal clothes - it only keeps my top half warm. It's great with ski trousers - not so much with a dress and tights (even wool ones!).

Antigon · 19/11/2018 11:34

But Canada Goose trap coyotes for their fur. They're not a by product of the meat industry.

Umbongointhejungle · 19/11/2018 11:37

Nothing is a by product of the meat industry!
Certainly not leather

Anyway! I am sorry about my username! I really didn’t know it was racist. I just liked the drink and someone meantioned it to me recently. I don’t remember the adds. I will change it.

Umbongointhejungle · 19/11/2018 11:38

@VenusOfWillendorf
Is it really warm. I’m more worried about biting winds that go through you

Yarnswift · 19/11/2018 11:42

It’s regularly down to -30 where I am.

Down and fur is commonplace here.

Op, go for a down filled coat which covers your bum and upper thighs. If you’re still cold an insulated skirt makes a HUGE difference. This sort of thing, but you can buy cheaper. www.outnorth.se/skhoop/alaska-long-down-skirt-45540?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_d7O_6_g3gIVw42yCh1chQBvEAQYAiABEgI1fvD_BwE#Black

Yarnswift · 19/11/2018 11:45

Synthetic insulation contributes to the micro plastic problem. Fur, wool and down are sustainable resources. They should be obtained as humanely as possible (don’t buy cheap Chinese stuff) but I’d rather use them than plastic.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 19/11/2018 11:50

But Canada Goose trap coyotes for their fur

This is perfectly true, but the traps have come a long way from what many imagine. Ethical companies now use the same ones as those who trap for marking and other conservation purposes, though of course that still leaves the issue of animals being killed for fur at all

Personally I very much respect the views of those who object to this ... I only wish it worked the other way round for those who don't

SnowBrussels · 19/11/2018 11:52

I have a long padded down coat from Uniqlo which feels very light but keeps me warm. I love it.

adaline · 19/11/2018 11:59

Insuloft/Primaloft and other artificial products like fleece have their own environmental impact too though. Microplastics are a real problem.

Chrystal1982 · 19/11/2018 12:01

I’m practically cold blooded and got sick of being cold in every coat I ever had so a few years ago I splashed out on a duck and goose down North Face snowboarding coat in white, I’ve never been cold since, it washes well to keep it white and it’s waterproof. Was expensive tho I got it for £250 and it had money off, think that was in 2010 but I’ve never had to buy a new coat since so it’s paid for itself

Umbongointhejungle · 19/11/2018 12:46

Has anyone bought peter storm
Blacks have a nice looking one for £59 down from 120
Women’s Luna parka

animaginativeusername · 19/11/2018 13:38

Same @Umbongointhejungle I've seen a peter storm coat, down to £59 - wanting it for daughter. Is it any good ?

animaginativeusername · 19/11/2018 13:38

At millets

Umbongointhejungle · 19/11/2018 15:13

Millets it’s actually £50 now with the extra discount code! I’ve ordered it! I’ll let you all know.
I went into blacks today and tried on the didrickson, and a jack wolf skin and a north face. All ok, but nothing that great for the price tag!
And millets said they would send it express for no extra charge and we’re very nice on the phone, so I hope it’s worth it!

Umbongointhejungle · 22/11/2018 15:59

Right guys! I bought the coat. and I have to say it’s lovely and warm and a great fit, would have liked a belt but for £50 down from 120 it’s a bloody good bargain!
I tried on loads of other expensive ones, and aside from having a brand, there doesn’t seem to be any difference in this one!

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 22/11/2018 16:07

Canada goose are about as ethical as it gets re down and fur. Obv if you don't agree with it that's absolutely fine, just don't buy it.

But when i'm at the bus stop with wind chill of -35 my fur and down stop me from getting frostbite. I can live with it. Polyester just won't cut it.

Not sure you need them in the UK though. I don't get mine out the closet till it's below zero.

Cutesbabasmummy · 22/11/2018 16:19

My North Face jacket has kept me toasty in the snow and all weathers, I bought it 7 years ago and and still wearing it - even stretched it over my bump when I was 9 months pregnant) so I've got my money's worth out of it.

lanbro · 22/11/2018 16:23

I have a down Rab, longer length so covers my bum. Very warm and not mega padded, but quite pricey

SandraTheBee · 22/11/2018 16:34

didriksons are excellent
