To ask where I can buy the warmest possible winter coat

Unsure72 · 18/11/2018 16:41

It's freezing down my way tonight and my ancient, woollen winter coat just doesn't cut it when it comes to keeping out the cold. I want a coat that will keep me super warm and toasty all winter so I don't dread leaving the house! Looking like I'm not dressed in a duvet would be a bonus, but is definitely not essential.

If anyone has any recommendations I would love to hear them!

I have a Poivre Blanc Belted puffer coat which I absolutely love and which is like pulling on a sleeping bag without massive bulk.

LemonySippet · 18/11/2018 23:26

I have this coat: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B073WHL83Y/ref=asc_df_B073WHL83Y56949899/?hvlocphy=9045405&linkCode=df0&hvptwo&psc=1&hvnetw=g&hvadid=309952946065&creative=22110&hvpone&hvlocint&creativeASIN=B073WHL83Y&th=1&hvpos=1o2&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl&hvqmt&tag=mumsnetforum-21&hvtargid=pla-358667558067&hvrand=6221344207512014502

It's surprisingly smart looking, 100% waterproof even in the heaviest downpour and incredibly warm. And has super big pockets Grin

My lovely MIL bought it for me after I moaned about getting soaked on the school run and I actually cried the first time I wore it as I couldn't remember the last time I'd been warm and dry during winter (I live in Wales!).

JuniperBeer · 18/11/2018 23:30

Didrikson parka!!!

Acopyofacopy · 19/11/2018 07:04

We moved here from Switzerland. Over there I only wore my ski coat for, well, skiing. Here it quickly became a staple for those bone-chilling school runs, especially if you have to wait for more than a minute on a damp and windy school yard.
It’s the dampness that’s the worst. -20 in Switzerland was fine, just around 0 over here is not!

NancyDonahue · 19/11/2018 07:37

I got mine from Costco. They do lovely coats. It's got knitted cuffs that stop the cold going up the sleeves.

Layers underneath are vital. No coat will keep you warm if you've got nothing between it and your skin.

A good long knitted scarf too. Not those loopy things that flap about - you need to be able have it right up to your neck and tucked inside your coat.

Bergans of Norway, down filled waterproof parka. Like wearing a duvet, bought in Norway but think it was about £300.
I think ahead for what clothes i need to wear underneath accoring to the temp and weather as it can quickly make you too hot!
Warm as toast sking, taking food to horses in my pyjamas in the snow etc. I try to keep it nice but increasing use it for farm jobs as other coats don’t come close!
Don’t go for fashion, tried and tested outdor brands are best.

adaline · 19/11/2018 07:45

I second the Rohan cocoon but it's downside is that it's not waterproof. I have a great RAB down jacket that I got cheap from a charity shop - it's amazingly warm but I only wear it dog walking otherwise I genuinely find it too hot.

RiverTam · 19/11/2018 08:11

I have just realised that my Jack Wolfskin doesn't cover my arse when I'm sitting down, currently on a freezing metal bench at the station. So a longline coat for me from LandsEnd, I reckon!

MasonJar · 19/11/2018 08:29

I bought my North Face Arctic parka 5 years ago. Warmest coat ever, also waterproof. It makes me look like a blimp as definitely duvet like but who cares when it's bitterly cold weather, blowing a gale and pouring with rain and dogs need a long walk.

nornironrock · 19/11/2018 08:31

Buy a North Face, Rab, or Mountain Equipment jacket. Buy the best you can afford, and then don't worry about ever needing another.

ginghamstarfish · 19/11/2018 09:04

I second the Lands End Squall parka - in fact I can't wear mine as I get too hot (and I live in Scotland).

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 19/11/2018 09:27

Meh, I find the perimenopause keeps me warm all year round!

Though I did buy a very comfy padded coat from Asda last week to wear when I'm dog walking in bitter weather. It was pretty cheap, surprisingly good quality and very warm. I'll only need it on the coldest days.

Umbongointhejungle · 19/11/2018 09:31

They neved have belts! I really want a belt and one that covers my thighs.
Any thoughts

SplishSplashSplosh · 19/11/2018 09:34

Trespass have a black Friday sale at the moment on warm coats,.including North face

3WildOnes · 19/11/2018 09:40

Uniqulo seamless down parka is super warm for £139. Canada goose and north face both do warmer down jackets but I think they are £300+

Abeautifulpeagreenboat · 19/11/2018 09:43

Esprit do really warm padded coats.

puzzledlady · 19/11/2018 09:53

Canada goose 100%

Antigon · 19/11/2018 09:58

@puzzledlady, have you RTFT and posts about Canada Goose trapping wolves by their legs for their fur?

Or do you just not care?

Umbongointhejungle · 19/11/2018 10:03

I would buy Canada goose if it wasn’t so expensive.

animaginativeusername · 19/11/2018 10:04

Millets has 50% off sale plus a further 15% off selected range

Soggiemoggie · 19/11/2018 10:15

I love my Uniqlo light down knee length puffer coat with hood. Only cost me £50 in a sale nearly two years ago now. Dry cleaned recently and still in great condition.

....I try to block out from my head how cruel it might be for the ducksConfusedBlush

AviatorShades · 19/11/2018 10:16

The best and most stylish foul weather winter coat I ever bought was in Chicago. It's not called the Windy City for nothing Grin

JaceLancs · 19/11/2018 10:19

My fake fur coats are the warmest of any of my coats
I don’t like padded coats they make me feel like the Michelin man and are not as cosy
Just bought a lovely new Karen Mullen grey fur from tkmaxx - it gets loads of positive comments

Antigon · 19/11/2018 10:35

@Umbongointhejungle

I'm really not surprised with your offensive username.

Shirleyphallus · 19/11/2018 10:41

@Antigon

What’s wrong with that username? Um bongo is a fruity drink and the lyrics say that they drink it in the jungle

But I cannot believe that people are still recommending Canada goose
