To ask where I can buy the warmest possible winter coat

Unsure72 · 18/11/2018 16:41

It's freezing down my way tonight and my ancient, woollen winter coat just doesn't cut it when it comes to keeping out the cold. I want a coat that will keep me super warm and toasty all winter so I don't dread leaving the house! Looking like I'm not dressed in a duvet would be a bonus, but is definitely not essential.

If anyone has any recommendations I would love to hear them!

Can someone please link to the warm £25 h and m coat?
I've got an esprit down coat. I'm warmer than I was last year but not warm enough.
I think layers is the way forward for me.

Umbongointhejungle · 18/11/2018 20:46

I read the PETA article on Canada goose and they are weiously clutching at fucking straws.
I think PETA are very good at propaganda. But I wouldn’t believe a word they said, if they were in anyway decent, I would listen. But their full of fucking shit.

I’ve got a Canada Goose jacket and it’s amazing. Obviously they are very expensive, but if you can afford it and want a really warm jacket, I’d say it’s a worthwhile investment.

rockingthelook · 18/11/2018 20:57

Rohan Cocoon coat, lightweight and the best investment clothing I've ever bought

SadieSue29 · 18/11/2018 21:02

I have a para jumper long bear coat, incredibly warm

Haworthia · 18/11/2018 21:03

Re. the Canada Goose debate - I have a parka (not Canada Goose) with a fur trimmed hood and the warmth is pretty unsurpassed.

I don’t understand why fur is so lambasted when eating meat and dairy, wearing leather or wearing sheepskin is totally fine.

chocolatecoveredraisons · 18/11/2018 21:04

Goose down Isla jacket from mountain warehouse. £100

BonnieF · 18/11/2018 21:11

Forget fashion retailers. They don’t sell proper outdoor clothing.

If you really want to keep warm you need proper outdoor gear from a proper outdoor brand. Berghaus, North Face or Rab would be good places to start. Try retailers Blacks, Cotswold Outdoor or GO Outdoors.

Mountain Warehouse are less expensive, and get looked down on by ‘proper’ outdoor types, but their stuff may be perfectly adequate for your needs while being £££ cheaper than the high-end gear.

RiverTam · 18/11/2018 21:12

I have a really warm Jack Wolfskin winter coat.

I thought down was pretty ethically dubious, animal cruelty?

PhilODox · 18/11/2018 21:14

I have a Merrell, that is a waterproof outer, and a zip-in/zip-out fleece inner... It's so hot, that even last winter (when it was absolutely freezing everywhere in the UK) I only wore it about ten times!

ThePoliticiansPraiseMyName · 18/11/2018 21:22

Where I live it regularly gets down to about -30 in winter, more with wind chill. I have a SoulCal double zip coat from sports direct. I originally bought it as a stop gap as it was about £30 but it is so good I've since bought another so I have one for dog walking and dragging the kids about and one for keeping clean!

Tillylantern · 18/11/2018 21:25

I have a ski jacket i bought in Aldi 8 years ago for a trip to Russia in the depths of winter. Its really warm. Really comfy and still immaculate all these years later. Its easy to wash and dry. If u feel the cold the built in stretchy fingerless gloves are great and the inside elasticated bit u can close to stop snow going up under the jacket keeps out the wind

Poloshot · 18/11/2018 21:26

Canada goose is the warmest coat you'll ever need but probably too warm apart from a few days every winter

MissConductUS · 18/11/2018 21:33

Another vote for Lands End. All of our outwear is from LE. I'm in a area of New York that has very cold, snowy winters. LE is based in Wisconsin, where the winters are absolutely epic. The coats are impeccably made. The customer service is outstanding.

They are also currently offering 50% off on outerwear as a Black Friday special.

Lands End UK

Hohofortherobbers · 18/11/2018 21:36

Ski jacket from mountain warehouse, £35, I don't look like I'm wearing a duvet, I look sporty and cool

animaginativeusername · 18/11/2018 22:17

I bought my coat from tkmaxx, expensive at £120 but I haven't bought a winter coat for the past 4 years. The inner looks like a sleeping bag

Tr1skel1on · 18/11/2018 22:31

I also swear by the Lands End squall stadium coat. I've had mine for years, I live in the arse end of nowhere and wear it every day to walk the dog.

Not only is it windproof and incredibly warm, it is also 100% totally waterproof so brilliant for those wet soggy freezing days we get so many of.

I love the fact it comes past my knees, if I wear long boots not a single scrap of me gets wet.

I'm also seriously tempted to buy another one in the half price sale! I currently have the claret one, think I need a black one too :)

SealSong · 18/11/2018 22:40

Unless your hiking in the Cairngorms in winter most people will find costs by Canada Goose and other ones designed for Canada and Scandinavia much too hot to wear in the UK apart from a couple of days a year. They're increasingly bought as status symbols which is tacky in the extreme.

MissConductUS · 18/11/2018 22:50

I get the Lands End promotions by email and it never gets better than 50%.

Oddly enough, for us poor Yanks the current promotion is only 25% off.

DH did get a new Squall Parka last week for 40% off. The zipper on his 25 year old LE parka broke in the tumble dryer. They said to return it for merchandise credit against the new one.n

Get the black one! 😀

Pinkyyy · 18/11/2018 22:59

Moncler are so warm! They don't come cheap but are great quality

BadLad · 18/11/2018 23:01

Pretty much the only time my wife isn't saying that she's cold is when she wears her Canada Goose. So I suggest that.

User9870 · 18/11/2018 23:06

Get a good waterproof coat and fleeces for inside.
I've been wearing it with a jumper under and just switched to a fleece...as it gets colder I have a fluffy fleece and if it gets really cold I wear more than one layer underneath....but waterproof is a must on top to keep the wet and wind out.

Ikeameatballs · 18/11/2018 23:11

I bought a NorthFace down parka a couple of months ago. It was reduced to £190, last year’s stock, and so far v warm. I also bought jack wolf skin gloves which are fantastic. www.outdoorgb.com/p/Jack_Wolfskin_Womens_Stormlock_Highloft_Gloves/

Huntlybyelection · 18/11/2018 23:16

TKMaxx have a great selection of coats. I went in looking for trainers and bought a knee length warm and showerproof Craghoppers coat. It was £40. It's a bit padded but not puffa jacket. Braw.

jimmyhill · 18/11/2018 23:23

Another vote for Canada Goose here
