wrong board but the preppers will probably flame me, as you will might for mentioning it on here Grin.
i was wondering if things goes toes up and there are food shortages, what happens with people who can't afford to -hoard- store up goods i.e the elderly and people on very tight budgets already living hand to mouth relying on food banks ?
any thoughts ?

I am saying that I think life in this country is changing for the worse. I think that those who have the ability to move - with immediate family - to another country should seriously think about doing so. I am at a stage in my life where it is probably not feasible to move (I'm nearly at the end of my working life, so there would be particular challenges in trying to earn my livelihood abroad) - but have ensured that my daughter will retain the ability to work and live in the EU.

I really do not think this is a short term thing - where buying a few tins or taking a long holiday -will mean that after the tins are eaten or the holiday is over everything will be fine.

bellinisurge · 19/11/2018 10:40

@PandorasBag , I don't think it's a few days thing either but I would rather encourage people to try and be as resilient as they can while anything new beds down in our country.
Three days of stuff is better than nothing. It really is. Gives you chance to take a breath, see how the land lies and how things are in your area without the immediate panic.

TheElementsSong · 19/11/2018 10:45

No pledges? How disappointing!

puzzledlady · 19/11/2018 10:54

You surely cannot actually believe that the UK will run out of the food. I don’t believe you are that unintelligent. Sorry. Of your trying to start a bun fight or be goady Biscuit

bellinisurge · 19/11/2018 10:55

Your written English is a bit suspect @puzzledlady . Have you just clocked on?

TheElementsSong · 19/11/2018 10:58

Ooh, is that a taker for the pledge? Gwan gwan gwan...

user187656748 · 19/11/2018 11:02

puzzled do you actually follow the news? If you do then you can possibly think that there are any guarantees that we won't face significant supple chain issues.

So either you're not very intelligent or you're very badly informed or you're a GF

user187656748 · 19/11/2018 11:02

knittingdad · 19/11/2018 11:13

The worst case scenario that I can envisage is something like:
Delays at Dover-Calais so fresh vegetables spoil at border.
TV reports of the above trigger panic-buying.
Panic-buying empties supermarket shelves.
Supermarket shelves are restocked for everything except fresh vegetables pretty quickly because German u-boats are not trying to starve us into submission.
Everyone consequently calms down and feels a bit embarrassed.

I will plan my food shopping to not need to go into a supermarket the weekend after Brexit. The only additional difficulty is that people on monthly salaries will be paid that Friday and so lots of people would normally do a large shop then.

bellinisurge · 19/11/2018 11:21

I think that you need to revisit your interpretation of worst case scenario if we crash out with no deal.
I would put what you describe as best case scenario.

knittingdad · 19/11/2018 11:26

Please describe how it could be worse?

Most of the food we eat won't spoil at the border, it will just take longer to get through. And it will get through because they aren't trying to starve us.

Indeed, given that the UK government can unilaterally waive import checks it is possible imports won't be delayed at all - and the problems will only exist for farmers who are exporting fresh food.

The biggest problems will be those caused by panic. Keep calm and carry on.

YeOldeTrout · 19/11/2018 11:32

Isn't NE the dairy of Europe? Some of those fresh dairy products could be held up, so that's an area to expect shortages.

bellinisurge · 19/11/2018 11:32

Keep calm and carry on by getting some resilience in your food stores now.
No, I don't intend to list all the terrible things that might happen if we crash out with no deal because ALL our agreements will cease.
The government is doing that. Poorly but it's doing it. And will keep doing it.

Thomasinaa · 19/11/2018 11:36

Poisonous - one of the many things I've learned in the last 2.5 years is that a good number of my fellow UK citizens are really really unpleasant people. And that very often those very same people are also astonishingly thick. Thick in a really don't want to learn kind of way.

YeOldeTrout · 19/11/2018 11:38

I was mistaken about Netherlands.
Suddenly that Irish border is looking very important to all of us who consume milk or cream.
More detailed modelling here. Seems UK imports majority of its milk & cream.

If food deliveries are delayed there will be ongoing food shortages. It won't be a situation where deliveries happen at the same speed but with a 2 day delay. They will happen extremely slowly. If you will live a long way from Dover (I live in Scotland) I imagine that lorries won't bother to deliver to us at all - as the supermarkets closer to Dover will be desperately waiting for deliveries, so why bother to drive further?

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 19/11/2018 11:40

I’m also going to put forward the idea that birth rates are falling because the way society works has changed. Women now have more jobs and are focused on careers and not ‘expected ‘ to settle down and have a family and have children. Women can have they life they choose instead of what society says you have to.

Thomasinaa · 19/11/2018 11:47

On the plus side, we do have dairy farms near us. So maybe not being able to import milk from Ireland won't be such a problem for Scotland.

Xenia · 19/11/2018 11:49

I don't eat dairy products and we do grow some food in the UK by the way and some of us have gardens so could grow stuff if it were hard to get veg. I don't think people need to worry at all about food. Some people may find their employer is less busy so jobs are less secure - that woud be a bigger worry.

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 19/11/2018 11:51

I don’t eat dairy either. And we don’t really have it in the house at all other than for coffee for my dh and son.

So I will be buying my cartons of rice milk. Don’t want to do the powdered milk. And I will always ha e the rice milk.

bellinisurge · 19/11/2018 11:52

@Xenia , I think people need to worry about food. Even best case scenario and for a few days - that's the best case scenario.

Xenia · 19/11/2018 11:55

They certainly can if they want to worry. Always better to be on the safe side. I just think it would be a pity if they worried too much as that just tends to upset people.

I think it's fairly likely but not certain the pretty good current deal May has hammered out will be adopted by parliament and agreed with the EU rather than a crash out without a deal in March. Even if we crash out there will be food - I promise everyone that.

bellinisurge · 19/11/2018 11:57

Thanks for your personal promise of food @Xenia . That's so reassuring in the face of realityConfusedHmm

SusanWalker · 19/11/2018 11:59

'could grow stuff if it's harder to get veg'. It'll be a bit late to be planting stuff when the shortages hit. But planting now just in case is stockpiling by another way......

In any case I found growing my own took a capital outlay in tools, seeds etc that a lot of people can't afford.

It's a bit naive to think we can become self sufficient. We couldn't even manage it in WW2 with rationing, a smaller population and every available space dug up for veg. Snoek anyone?
