Tell me what fun things she does

This is freaky!

OP posts:
Mintylizzy9 · 18/11/2018 01:37

My 4 year old spends his days asking her to fart, what time is it, what’s the weather like tomorrow, play baby shark, play Johnny Cash (don’t ask!) and telling her he loves her!

She will find stuff on tv if you have the fire stick.

Reminders are great as well.

She tells bed time stories.

SnappedandFartedagain · 18/11/2018 01:39

You can ask it to play Pointless, that’s quite fun.

fieryginger · 18/11/2018 01:44

We use our Google home all the time. I've bought the large one for DH for Christmas as we only had the mini (which is great) but he uses it consistently enough to warrant the better speaker and mics, he can put the mini elsewhere. I bought him Alexa originally but we are all linked to Google, so he changed it.

1forAll74 · 18/11/2018 01:53

Oh, are you all from a land far away, like aliens,, I have heard of alexa, but !! I Zombies, ha ha.. I have still got a wind up radio, and a mangle..

Cineraria · 18/11/2018 03:36

We add stuff to our Ocado order. She doesn't always get exactly the right thing, e.g. Might add the wrong brand of handwash but when we go into our order it's a good reminder that we wanted that item. The Ocado app for it is annoyingly once familiar and cheery though.

Zoflorabore · 18/11/2018 03:43

Alexa is a cow, she keeps ignoring me Grin

Dd (7) loves it when she has a play date as she takes Alexa out of the kitchen and up to her room and asks her lots of questions.

Seriously, mine has been out of sorts, she may have the flu.

AlbertWinestein · 18/11/2018 04:00

We’ve got rid of her. She’s no longer welcome in our house!

mathanxiety · 18/11/2018 04:03
Just don't ever ask it to play 'Something's Cooking in the Kitchen' by Dana, in a Scottish accent.
e1y1 · 18/11/2018 04:19

@AlbertWinestein - if I can ask, is it because of privacy concerns or something else.

I am intrigued and do (almost) want one, especially as they're currently on BF sale.

BUT as mentioned once or twice in thread, the idea of a gadget permenantly listening freaks me out.

We have loads of other things, Spotify, Netflix, Fire tv etc - but it comes to Alexa and I'm uneasy.

luckybird07 · 18/11/2018 05:01

We got ours 4 years ago so are used to her and she is our alarm on a morning and music player and radio-she does listen in though....we broke part of our kitchen tap and were talking about replacing a washer- the next day the part of the tap we needed was being advertised in the side bar.

oflow · 18/11/2018 05:13

It's scary to read how much posters' children are interacting with Alexa and how they'll view it as normal. It's a cleverly marketed surveillance device. It records non stop. For a recent murder case, the Alexa was taken for evidence as it was recording...recording all the time, not just when switched on.

Tiscold · 18/11/2018 05:27

keyword spotting to detect the wake word. When these devices detect the wake word, they stream audio to the Cloud, including a fraction of a second of audio before the wake word."

So noit isn't recording you all the time. It listens for the wake word like alexa, then records your data.

Bluntness100 · 18/11/2018 05:33

Lol,at some of the tinfoil hat stuff on here, it doesn't record all the time and it's not a surveillance device, anyone with one will tell you that, becayse everything it records is sent to your phone and you can read it. 🤣

oflow · 18/11/2018 05:55

Bluntness100 lol at you believing that.

binkyblinky · 18/11/2018 05:59

I love Alexa! Love the trivia hero game. Useful for allsorts.
My husband thinks I'm crazy for saying Thankyou !

Tiscold · 18/11/2018 06:02

She's right though, there have been independent tests and it only records once you wake it.

And what use would amazon have with recording all our conversations?

sonandhelpneeded · 18/11/2018 06:08

Place marking

MrsMummyBx · 18/11/2018 06:10

We got one in the BF sale arrived yesterday.

Ask her to play peppa pig theme tune- DS 2.5 loved it!! Also the animal noises.

I'm not into tech, was hubby's choice. The making lists and playing music seems cool. Not sure i would have bought it myself though.

Interested in the concerns over her listening in. If she wants to listen to mine and hubby's convos then she is welcome.

oflow · 18/11/2018 06:13

Tiscold to target marketing. The same way you give consent for your microphone to record when you install Facebook Messenger etc. You must have noticed that your mobile shows you ads for random things you spwak about but have never typed into your mobile?

strawberrisc · 18/11/2018 06:19

It records non stop. For a recent murder case, the Alexa was taken for evidence as it was recording...recording all the time, not just when switched on.

Crickey. That’s made me think. What will she have picked up from my bedroom? Coughing, occasional farting, laughing at Youtube videos and the odd session with my vibrator.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 18/11/2018 06:27

My sister has Alexa and I really don't see the point.

By the time you've said turn on the light you could have done it yourself. She never understands first time and you have to speak so clearly and loudly it is ridiculous.

sonandhelpneeded · 18/11/2018 06:27

I play sleep sounds for 30 mins to go to sleep! Love the sea and rain ones.

sonandhelpneeded · 18/11/2018 06:28

@strawberrisc GrinGrin

motortroll · 18/11/2018 06:33

So I'm convinced (in spite of the spy threat!)

What is the difference between all the devices? I see the dot is on offer, how is it different to the others? What can it do? Does it connect to smart tv?

PhilomenaButterfly · 18/11/2018 06:33

"Alexa, open the pod bay doors."
"Alexa, tea, Earl Grey, hot."
"Alexa, do you like waffles?"
