Ok an exaggeration but only a slight one Grin

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 17/11/2018 12:09

Didn’t realise you could get WiFi in caves OP Grin

ReverseTheFerret · 17/11/2018 12:09

Let them continue like that - it keeps them all securely confined and out of my hair!

epicclusterfuck · 17/11/2018 12:09

@ComtesseDeSpair what kind of thing do you mean when you say 'For example, Edinburgh, where I lived for almost four years, is a gorgeous city but it isn’t, culturally or in terms of diversity of lifestyle, a capital city in the way London is.'

I'm just wondering if it is some time ago that you lived there...?

chillpizza · 17/11/2018 12:09

It often feels like those who live in London expect everyone else to wish they too lived in London and that London is the best thing ever and London London London london.

To top it off though when those London London people get priced out they move into the nicer areas and push up the prices there for the locals.

You couldn’t pay be enough to live there and frankly I can’t see any point in my future where I will step foot in the place again.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 17/11/2018 12:10

Ha ha met some friends of a friend once who told me they had just moved to “the country.”

They meant Loughton, which last time I checked, was still on the central line Grin

SoupDragon · 17/11/2018 12:11

But equally, people who live outside London continually go on about 'that London' and how it's 'so snooty' and 'so expensive' and everyone is 'so dour' not like our lovely friendly village where you can buy cakes made by old Mrs Brown.

This.

mothertruck3r · 17/11/2018 12:12

London is more like the 3rd world these days.

sossages · 17/11/2018 12:13

Just about, checking, but I had to catch and skin a wild haggis to have something to write on.

bookworm14 · 17/11/2018 12:14

Oh for god’s sake. No, London is not like ‘the third world’

bookworm14 · 17/11/2018 12:15

You do know that millions of people just go about their daily lives here without incident?

continuallychargingmyphone · 17/11/2018 12:16

Checking Grin

I do think the UK is like two countries in many ways. What I have never quite managed to work out is how ordinary people on ordinary salaries bloody well live in London!

DramaAlpaca · 17/11/2018 12:17

Of course the north is best, we have Booths supermarkets Smile

Queenofthedrivensnow · 17/11/2018 12:18

They can keep London. I can cope for 2 nights there then I feel constantly grubby and tired and broke.
I live outside Plymouth. Moments from empty beaches and rolling moors. I can live on my sw salary.
Plymouth is a lot more cultured these days. We have a thriving art scene now and 3 cinemas and lots of poncey shops. Loads of diversity here but Plymouth is like a village and very community focused now.

My dds think london is marvellous and want multiple holidays there though!

PixieMiss · 17/11/2018 12:20

I live in Yorkshire which is either beautiful, stunning, perfect for a holiday etc. Or its a deprived dump!

Depends on who you're asking South of Watford services!!

Gildashairflick · 17/11/2018 12:22

About 30 years ago at a wedding darn sarf a guest was genuinely gobsmacked that we had colour tele and M&S. Genuinely taken aback. Said more about her than the north I reckon. Off down t'pit now for more coal to put on the tinterweb

ComtesseDeSpair · 17/11/2018 12:23

@epicclusterfuck - I lived in Edinburgh between 2012-2015 and still visit as kept my old flat. I love the place - but I think that even the biggest Edinburgh fan would be hard pushed to say there was little difference between Edinburgh and London.

Part of it is always going to be size and demographic dynamic: as one of the world’s great capital cities, London attracts people that other cities don’t and, as a result, other places can seem less socially liberal and more traditional in comparison. And I absolutely understand that you can’t expect the same breadth of culture, diversity, party scene, nightlife, things to do generally, social attitude and so on in a city of less than a million as a city of 12 million. That’s probably what people who love London struggle with the most - in most other major cities in the UK you might have a handful of options for any given cuisine you want to eat / club you want to go to / theatre you’d like to see / insert whatever here - in London you will have literally hundreds.

anniehm · 17/11/2018 12:23

London does seem like a different country despite me living there for 25 years. I live in a small-medium city in a normal house - schools here are crap though (ranked 119 as a lea last year). But we have a John Lewis, we have an excellent theatre, we even have Picasso's in the art gallery! The biggest difference though is my large house cost less than a studio in outer London.

53rdWay · 17/11/2018 12:23

I remember travelling down from Edinburgh to London a few years ago, and getting asked by the people I was meeting if it was much busier than I was used to. In August. Ah yes, how I do love the laid-back quiet rural atmosphere of Edinburgh in August Grin

MNers do have some weird ideas about ‘the north’ sometimes. Like house prices, which we all know are extortionate in London but still aren’t exactly super-cheap everywhere else. You see a lot of “if people want to afford a house they should leave London, you don’t HAVE to live in London you know” like a house anywhere outside the M25 will cost you £3.72 and a part-share in a whippet.

stumpyteapot · 17/11/2018 12:23

You mean there's actually a civilisation outside of the M25 ?

Munchmallow · 17/11/2018 12:24

I do think the UK is like two countries in many ways

I think you need to brush up on your geography!!

bruffin · 17/11/2018 12:25

born and raised in London, now live with walking distance of London. I love being able to get a train into the City but I would never live "in" London again. Ive lived in areas like Crystal Palace which people rave about on here. They are really not worth the money people seem to be prepared to pay to live there.

AamdC · 17/11/2018 12:26

There are posters that think its London and than nothing , no transpoet no decent education , no divetsity no cities etc i live in a very diverse rown in the north west in my sons old primary school at least half the pupuls were not white british , there were african, Indian, eastern european and a numberbof families from rhe Philippinesi can get any number of different cuisines from around the world if i so wish and there is a sainsburys a ten minute walj away that is 24 hrs all the things i have heard from posters about why they cant leave London.

Munchmallow · 17/11/2018 12:28

And thank god Edinburgh, imho the best city in the world, is nothing like London which is a stinking hell hole.

jade9390 · 17/11/2018 12:29

London is the 3rd world unless you are very rich. Elsewhere, we live in nice houses instead of poxy flats and can order from any shop via the internet.
