What with it being CIN and May having to replace cabinet ministers again, I'm worried that this isn't being more widely reported.

For all the government say that Universal Credit is working to get people back into work, the UN reporter on extreme poverty and human rights finds that a fifth of the UK population is living in poverty now.

To clarify the jobs were for the same organisation but different departments.

borderline11 · 18/11/2018 15:24

As a child i remember my dad (a postman) getting enough wages to support us all. Not a great wage but enough to pay the rent, all the bills and keep us all fed. There was no need of any government top ups. As us kids got a bit older my mum decided to go out to work, not of necessity, but to earn what they called “pin money”.This was her own personal spending money to buy a few luxuries and “treat herself”. How times have changed.

SilkenTofu · 18/11/2018 15:30

Absolutely. Saw this in one paper and thought OMG, why is there not uproar in this.
5th largest economy and people living in poverty and many using food banks.

@LakieLady

I am in the SE, and ironically enough, last year I worked for a homeless charity. Here, in my town, the temp accommodation is in a block of flats that is basically a drug den. And you're not allowed to take your own furniture, which means I'll have to pay for storage for a whole flat full of furniture, or risk losing everything again, as I did when I left my abusive ex.

Landlords simply WILL NOT let to people on HB. I can't find a job 'till I know where I'm going to be living, and I can't find a place to live 'till I have a job. Vicious circle.

Get all the supporting evidence you can about your daughter's problems and the particular adverse impact of change on her behaviour etc, that will help no end. Get Children's Services involved, they can be a powerful voice in these situations.

I have done all that. I even have a supporting letter from my job coach at the JC - I fall under the section dealing with victims of DV. The council basically told me tough luck. They also said they don't think I'd be able to afford a 3-bedroom council house at £400/month, but said I should rather try and find private rental at £650/month. Because that's much more affordable, isn't it Hmm.

HelenaDove · 18/11/2018 16:12

Becca You had that attitude and were treated like that ina hospital??!! there are no words Sad

HelenaDove · 18/11/2018 16:14

@Uniquack your situation shows once again how women suffer and are punished for daring to leave an abusive man.

Uniquack · 18/11/2018 16:22

@HelenaDove - indeed.

HelenaDove · 18/11/2018 16:25
Thanks
HelenaDove · 18/11/2018 17:22

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/benefit-cuts-hit-mad-cow-disease-sufferer-0wwml87fd

A girl born brain-damaged after her mother contracted the human form of mad cow disease (BSE) faces losing her home because of benefit cuts linked to the switch to universal credit.

"Since her mother’s death when she was seven months old, Emily Lydon, now 19 — who is unable to speak, walk or eat for herself — has been brought up by her grandmother, Jean Godfrey.

Last month Jean, 68, was told their joint income was to be slashed from the £720 a week needed to pay for Emily’s 24-hour care and transport to £342

Jean Emilys main carer now faces having to sell their bungalow in East Markham in Nottinghamshire."

Graphista · 18/11/2018 17:38

Thanks Helena - that's shocking what's happening to a severely disabled person.

And in that case even the most ardent JRM fan can't claim it was her or even her mothers fault - if anything possibly that Tory govts fault!

HelenaDove · 18/11/2018 17:44

Ginger the attitude you show towards social housing tenants is EXACTLY the kind of attitude that the Grenfell residents had to put up with And its this kind of attitude that leads to the hostile environment towards tenants. The disdain the othering the corner cutting. Which then led to the fire.

Becca19962014 · 18/11/2018 17:59

helena sadly yes. I'm now in a position of needing their help (breathing difficulties) I cannot even go in the door as I have a massive phobia of being trapped in there again under the care of those people.

They just couldn't see past my age and being on benefits to what was going on.

Yes they got into trouble for it, a lot, but that doesn't make me feel any more confident.

HelenaDove · 18/11/2018 18:02

@Becca thats bloody awful I posted on another thread that i was beginning to grow suspicious that the backs of NHS prescriptions havent yet been changed to show UC despite UC being launched FIVE YEARS ago People are being fined even when they have ticked the box they have been told to tick.

Becca19962014 · 18/11/2018 18:02

Whoever came up with with the phrase "the most ill will be protected" gave the government the right to do whatever they want. Because everyone believed it to be true and everyone's definition of "most ill" too is very subjective.

HelenaDove · 18/11/2018 18:04

Whether they got into trouble for it (as they should) or not the damage has been done and thanks to them you now have a phobia

Caused entirely by them Thanks

Gingerrogered · 18/11/2018 18:32

Oh boo hoo Helena. But your claims fall down because I've been a social housing tenant myself.

That's why this makes me so damn angry. I spent almost a year in extremely poor health in temporary accommodation. I have seen how awful it is for the genuinely homeless to struggle through that system.

Which is why I am so upset about a pair of scumbags who already have a suitable home manipulating the system and shoving back other needy disabled homeless people who genuinely need a home and are in a horrible situation.

These women are killing people who need that bed. They are trying to deprive more deserving people of a council house. They're a pair of selfish evil twats.

HelenaDove · 18/11/2018 18:34

Um i think youve posted on the wrong thread.

Gingerrogered · 18/11/2018 18:36

Whoever came up with with the phrase "the most ill will be protected" gave the government the right to do whatever they want. Because everyone believed it to be true and everyone's definition of "most ill" too is very subjective.

But she's not 'the most ill' is she? Her being turned down for council housing is actually making sure that housing is going to the 'most ill' rather than going to a pair of scam artists.

They are the ones trying to do the 'most ill' out of a house. Not me, not the Tories - they are doing it.

Gingerrogered · 18/11/2018 18:37

Second time I've done that today. Think I need to go to bed. Thanks Helena.

HelenaDove · 18/11/2018 18:39

i think this is the thread you meant to continue posting on.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3421550-to-think-the-hospital-should-have-kicked-them-out-a-long-time-ago

Isitsixoclockalready · 18/11/2018 18:43

Feels like the tip of the iceberg. I get the distinct impression that a 'no deal' brexit is exactly what some of the Tory politicians have been working towards so that they can deregulate (this isn't scaremongering - just look up articles on Dominic Raab who seems to be very ambitious towards the top job and also 'think tanks' like the IEA who clearly want deregulation and health care privatisation). Scary stuff if you don't happen to be wealthy.

themachinestops · 18/11/2018 20:17

I see that not one of the apologists for UC on this thread have even bothered reading or replying to my post outlining the REALITIES and LOOPHOLES of UC.

I presume you are all in agreement with the UC policies I explained then .. nothing wrong with them then.. completely fair to those (mainly working, btw) people who have to claim help. Hmm Hmm

CondomsLubricantAndFlapjack · 18/11/2018 20:51

If you're officially classed as a jobseeker you have to prove - via online searches & applications, written proof of rejections etc that prove you're spending 35 hours a week working on getting a job. Anyone who doesn't do this is sanctioned.

I'll tell my DH when he finishes his 50 hour week - i'm sure he'll be full of sympathy

Devilishpyjamas · 18/11/2018 21:44

Housing doesn’t go to the most disabled. My son has been stuck in an ATU nearly 400 miles from home for over a year waiting for housing. He has severe autism, severe learning disabilities, is non-verbal and had epilepsy. He requires 2:1 care for 24 hours a day.

The LA have assessed him as being in the lowest category for housing need and there info they sent suggested he sleep on a friend’s sofa.

His completely unnecessary ATU stay has cost the NHS 12k a week incidentally for over a year & broken a whole host of his human rights.
