I really usually enjoy the JL Christmas ad but this year it’s bloody awful!

Well I loved it!! It brought a tear to my eye. And yes John Lewis do sell pianos.. digital pianos, and Elton John t-shirts and Elton John records and records and record players. And a rather nice vinyl display frame that I shall be buying, so they got me! (Damn I clicked their link 😉) Merry Elton John Lewis Christmas everyone 🎹🎄🛍

LightastheBreeze · 15/11/2018 09:00

Perhaps lots of piano shaped presents will appear on peoples Facebook present pilesGrin

LookAtThatCritter · 15/11/2018 09:00

It’s awful Angry

MirandaWest · 15/11/2018 09:01

Bring back Monty the penguin

Wellfuckmeinbothears · 15/11/2018 09:04

Ah I quite liked it! But that is one of my favourite songs.

ogglet · 15/11/2018 09:04

Bah Humbug! I loved it! 🎄

Offredismysister · 15/11/2018 09:06

Merlotmummy that’s really interesting.
Out of curiosity, what did you think of the Sainsbury’s advert?
That’s my favourite so far.

TwitterQueen1 · 15/11/2018 09:06

wtf does 'lack of wokeness' mean? I don't think it's the ad that's up itself.....

Kamma89 · 15/11/2018 09:07

It's lovely

WeirdCatLady · 15/11/2018 09:08

I normally love the JL ad, but this one left me cold. Utter drivel. As a PP said, it’s an advert for Elton John, not John Lewis. It’s also not at all festive and I thought including his mother was terribly contrived, given how many years they spent not speaking.

LillianGish · 15/11/2018 09:09

Love it - the little boy's face when he sees the piano! That's totally Christmas. The strapline is Some gifts are more than just a gift - John Lewis are not trying to sell you a piano, they are saying who knows what your gift could inspire. It could have been a little Jamie Oliver getting a whisk or David Beckham getting a football, but neither of them could provide their own soundtrack of course! It's a great story about a little boy who goes on to become a world famous pianist - it works because it is Elton John. I actually rather like the fact that they are not trying to sell you a stuffed toy on the back of it.

SoyDora · 15/11/2018 09:09

I was confused at ‘lack of wokeness’ too. Is wokeness a word? What on Earth does it mean?

ClemClemFandango · 15/11/2018 09:10

I liked it. I like the sentiment and it brought a tear to my eye, which is the objective of the Christmas ad. I'm not a huge Elton John fan, but I like the song, which helps.

I also liked the Iceland advert, it's a shame they banned it.

Spankyoumuchly · 15/11/2018 09:12

I love it. It might be because I'm having a really hard time and dh has gone away on business. The bit about 'how wonderful life is when you're in the world ' made me miss him a lot. Also reminded me of how much I love my dcs as it had little Elton in it. I'm not usually sentimental, I'm normally a cynical arsehole.

NachoCheese22 · 15/11/2018 09:14

Utter crap this year. So disappointed because it's lacking any Christmas spirit. Doesn't help that I can't stand EJ either. DD12 thinks it's a joke ad and they'll release the 'proper ad' next week Confused

Wannabeyorkshirelass · 15/11/2018 09:15

It's ok. The little boy looks so thrilled, but then the man looks absolutely bloody miserable so I do wonder if the message about it being the start of something great really comes across.

Rosehip10 · 15/11/2018 09:17

@Soydora - ah, your Thurs AM net skills are better than mine! Smile

LillianGish · 15/11/2018 09:18

I also love the Sainsbury's ad, but John Lewis already did one with their Partnership advert earlier in the year.

Rosehip10 · 15/11/2018 09:19

@LillianGish - I think JL ARE trying to sell you a piano - link in the ad take you to "their first pianos in 70 years"

Pilcrow · 15/11/2018 09:22

I'm not really that bothered about Christmas ads but I can't for the life of me think why Elton John of all people represents the Christmas spirit, or why John Lewis would think he needs the fawning publicity (or the money).

I'd rather have the Sainsburys one, although even that's a blatant rip-off of that 'Nativity!' film.

Cosmos45 · 15/11/2018 09:23

Bring back Monty and Mabel (the penguins)..

As a previous PP said, this is not an advert for JL it's an Elton John promotion... And he sounds like a pub singer in the opening section..

capercaillie · 15/11/2018 09:24

I loved it!

HRTpatch · 15/11/2018 09:24

I loved it.
Better than the creepy man in the moon one, spying on children with his telescope.Grin

TheWitchwithNoName · 15/11/2018 09:25

They should have saved the Queen ad for Christmas - prefer that one

SilverySurfer · 15/11/2018 09:25

I love the fact that here we are (including myself) discussing an elitist John Lewis ad when it looks more likely than ever that our government will crash us out of the EU with no deal. I am wondering how people will afford paying back loans they took out for buying ££££K worth of instruments for Christmas and who will be able to afford music tuition when food supply will be affected and prices rocket on 1 April 2019.

I love the fact that no matter the subject of a thread, someone will find a way of using it to try to bash Brexit. Hmm

I thought the ad was odd and no idea how it represents John Lewis. It certainly doesn't make me want to rush to spend my money in one of their stores.
