I really usually enjoy the JL Christmas ad but this year it’s bloody awful!

YABU. Thought it was lovely and great that the shops aren't going to full with as much tat unlike after the animal adverts

speakout · 15/11/2018 07:57

While the Profits of John Lewis tumble and management unstable they have managed to produce a no cost christmas ad.

Who paid for this Elton John advert I wonder?

I am guessing Elton John supported at least some of the cost- nice ad for him neatly positioned into a high profile and well known ad slot.

I am deeply cynical about this.

Villanellesproudmum · 15/11/2018 07:57

I like it, I thought he’d had a big fall out with his mum?

smartiecake · 15/11/2018 07:58

Is this the week that tickets for his tour have also gone on sale?
Agree that it seems like an Elton John advert to me.

3catsandadog · 15/11/2018 07:59

Villanellesproudmum -he did they fell out for 10 years but reconciled before her death

sluj · 15/11/2018 07:59

Disappointing and I'm not sure that EJ was actually all that happy with what the piano has opened up for him . Such a sad grumpy face.
Not Christmassy at all

amymel2016 · 15/11/2018 07:59

I like it, it’s far better than the pile of rubbish M&S have trotted out

SoyDora · 15/11/2018 07:59

It is a crap ad - JL don’t sell pianos

They do now.

MrsGollach · 15/11/2018 08:00

One of my all time favourite songs but really don't understand why Elton would do this.

I dislike xmas and I dislike all xmas ads so I'm not the right person to comment.

AspergersMum · 15/11/2018 08:00

Advert for Elton. Don't like it. And as for rewriting history...

Sparklingbrook · 15/11/2018 08:05

I like it.

The JL advert splits MN every single year.

ShowOfHands · 15/11/2018 08:06

I said to DH just yesterday, it isn't Christmas until I've seen the annual "AIBU to think the JL ad is crap" thread. Fa la la la la...

Drivemecrazy1974 · 15/11/2018 08:08

I like the advert. However, I do feel it is a bit rich that it's showing affection for his mother when he famously ignored her for many years. But, then again, none of us know the full story, and, as is often said on this very site, there are always 2 sides!

To the poster who said that EJ wouldn't donate his fee to charity - he has donated loads of money to charity - off the top of my head I know that he donated the proceeds from Sacrifice to several AIDS charities. There's also the The Elton John Charitable Trust which supports over 90 charities. So, I think you're being a little unfair on him to be honest.

Ruperbear · 15/11/2018 08:09

Felt it was more a publicity ad fro Elton John. Think it’s sweet but that’s about it.

DahliaDiver · 15/11/2018 08:10

I had to turn it off, all that camera swinging had me on the verge of vomming.

Vagndidit · 15/11/2018 08:10

Can you actually buy a piano at John Lewis!?!

Didn't think so. Otherwise, it's just an advert for the biopic. At least it didn't feature Lily Bloody Allen butchering his songs.

2bright · 15/11/2018 08:10

Lovely. Celebrating rich, ego-centric, naval gazing & privileged white males, what's not to like? I can definitely relate not and must get my kid a piano for ££££K for Christmas as I cannot help but aspire to dc becoming a rich, ego-centric, naval gazing & privileged white male after seeing this ridiculous unoriginal ad.

Envy < not envy.

Neolara · 15/11/2018 08:15

Loved it.

Puggles123 · 15/11/2018 08:16

I prefer Very’s ad, which has the exact same message.

LightastheBreeze · 15/11/2018 08:16

Apparently they are going to have pianos instore, Ad was OK but best one was Monty one. I still have my Monty and Mabel which come out each Christmas and sit on the mantlepiece

MrsMouse03 · 15/11/2018 08:19

It's ok but not one of their best.

recraft · 15/11/2018 08:22

Every time it comes on we'll be doing a hairstyle count in this house, so I think it's going to keep us amused. He's got some good tunes to be fair.

NotAnotherJaffaCake · 15/11/2018 08:24

Can’t abide EJ. Just waiting for someone to do a Christmas ad with Ken Bruce and Santa’s a Scotsman. Now THAT would be the Christmas ad to end all ads....

thisshitgotreal · 15/11/2018 08:25

Just watched the sainsburys one - so much better than JL!! As someone said above, JL have just lined the pockets a bit more of a meg rich white, privileged male - merry effing christmas

2bright · 15/11/2018 08:26

I love the fact that here we are (including myself) discussing an elitist John Lewis ad when it looks more likely than ever that our government will crash us out of the EU with no deal. I am wondering how people will afford paying back loans they took out for buying ££££K worth of instruments for Christmas and who will be able to afford music tuition when food supply will be affected and prices rocket on 1 April 2019.

Don't get me wrong, I love music and we are an instrument playing family but this ad is incredibly decadent and up itself. Its only redeeming feature is a distinct lack of wokeness, quite retro in message in style.
