I really usually enjoy the JL Christmas ad but this year it’s bloody awful!

OP posts:
ziggiestardust · 15/11/2018 07:24

I absolutely hate it. Just a massive ego trip for Elton John.

HalfCatHalfMouse · 15/11/2018 07:26

Really liked it YABU

DollyWilde · 15/11/2018 07:29

Agree OP. Not festive and of no interest if you’re not an EJ fan.

Monty the Penguin is the best JL ad!

BestIsWest · 15/11/2018 07:31

Loved it but my favourite so far this year is the VISA high street shopping one.

FiveNightsAtMummys · 15/11/2018 07:33

I liked it

caringdenise009 · 15/11/2018 07:33

The Elton John whose mum had to employ and Elton John impersonator to come to her birthday party because he froze her out for years and famously wouldn't speak to her? That Elton John?

LegArmpits · 15/11/2018 07:33

Love it.

Toyboysrus · 15/11/2018 07:35

I have no interest in Elton or his music or his life story so it didn't do anything for me. The little boy is adorable though, maybe in the cut down showings they could just show his little happy face and skip the rest.

Glossymare · 15/11/2018 07:36

Love it Smile

Unfinishedkitchen · 15/11/2018 07:37

They made a mistake centering it around a celebrity as not everyone will like that person.

I for one cannot stand Elton John so will not seek out the ad. Plus didn’t he treat his mother like shit blanking her for years so why is he in an ad devoted to his mum? He also has more of an affinity with Harrods than JL, he’s so ostentatious and over the top so I can’t see the connection.

Sounds like a tie in with his new world tour. Would bet that his ‘people’ reached out to JL proposing the idea and the twits in JLs marketing dept thought it would work.

Theknacktoflying · 15/11/2018 07:40

It is a crap ad - JL don’t sell pianos (upright pianos are usually freecycled as no-one has place for them) and can’t abide EJ.

The Sainsbury ad has my vote ,,,

Theknacktoflying · 15/11/2018 07:41

EJ is also a shop-aholic ... such a bad fit

Unfinishedkitchen · 15/11/2018 07:43

And no, there’s no way EJ would donate his fee to charity. This is a man so craven for money that he played Sun City during apartheid South Africa and plays private gigs for dictators and oligarchs.

shirleyschmidt · 15/11/2018 07:44

Wow what a great advert... for Elton john?! What has THAT got to do with JL - or Xmas? I'd get it a bit more if they'd used Step Into Christmas, it'd have at least some festive-ness! I suppose that wouldn't be emotional enough for a television advert. 🤷‍♀️
Nope, not for me!

Bimmy76 · 15/11/2018 07:45

I liked it. Half way through I felt a bit “yeah yeah, merry Elton John day, whevs” but by the end I thought it was great.

Better than Jeremy Corbyn on the moon.

MinorRSole · 15/11/2018 07:45

I'm not an Elton John fam and the story of it didn't really appeal to me. Not many people have the money or space for a piano and if they wanted to be sentimental I would have preferred the smaller every day things that we all take for granted. Too flashy and about Elton John and not much else.
I prefer the fake gingerbread man one, at least that one makes you remember to blow out your candles!

CookieSwirlC · 15/11/2018 07:47

What overpriced soft toy can they sell from that advert this year? A toy piano? Elton John cuddly toy?

speakout · 15/11/2018 07:47

I hate it.

I don't like Elton John anyway.

Theknacktoflying · 15/11/2018 07:48

The dame EJ who has an open marriage and paid ££££ to keep salacious stories of his husband’s sex life out of the media - a real pin up for a middle class, family store ...

There must have been some good sh*t passed around the offices to rubber stamp this load ...

LittleBookofCalm · 15/11/2018 07:49

And there is an Elton John film out anyway?
confusing.
It did bring a tear to my eye, in spite of myself.

but actually you know pianos are expensive, what is the message? buy an expensive piano.?
or the fact that an expensive piano made Elton John the superstar he is?

MinorRSole · 15/11/2018 07:49

Good point @CookieSwirlC - they could do with the profits

Mumtoboy123 · 15/11/2018 07:50

I was waiting for this thread! I like the message and the music and it did bring a tear... however, i thought its main purpose was to promote elton john who will no doubt rerelease Your Song off the back if this

NicePieceOfPlaid · 15/11/2018 07:51

First one of theirs to bring tears to my eyes. I miss my mum.

Nutkins24 · 15/11/2018 07:53

I like it. More than previous years. And it did bring a little tear to my eye!

oldmum22 · 15/11/2018 07:55

I like the advert but cant see the connection to John Lewis. Are they implying that only for receiving his first piano as a Christmas present , the piano allegedly having come from John Lewis, he would not be EJ, just plain old Reg Dwight living in Ruislip (I think) ?
Like the music, like EJ, but don't get it .
