I really usually enjoy the JL Christmas ad but this year it’s bloody awful!

Disappointing

puzzledlady · 15/11/2018 08:27

I like it. If you don’t then you don’t I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️ - Elton is a legend and such a talent. I’m not sure John Lewis is going to lose much sleep over you not liking it. Smile

Loonoon · 15/11/2018 08:29

As an Elton fan I loved it, it’s setting me up for his concert next year. As an advert for JO it’s laughable. The message seems to be that he is more important than their brand - which may or may not be true, but why would they want to promote the possibility?

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he had donated the fee to his AIDs foundation, he’s raised millions for that charity over the years.

2bright · 15/11/2018 08:30

Elton is a legend and such a talent.
...which the ad was trying hard to remind us of but ended up highlighting a certain has-been feel.

TansyViolet · 15/11/2018 08:31

Love it

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 15/11/2018 08:35

I thought it was an advert for the upcoming biopic.Blush

He's also don't quite a bit for the Mercury Phoenix trust over the years too.

Snog · 15/11/2018 08:39

A) boring
B) no cuddly toy tie in

👎🏻

Rosehip10 · 15/11/2018 08:41

Shit advert which blowing smoke up a bloke who treated his mum like shit for years.

John Lewis don't even have a musical instrument department, these days at least.

ShalomJackie · 15/11/2018 08:43

I noticed that the emmerdale and corrie music was a piano version but it went completely over my head that it was an homage to the JL ad until I read this thread!

I think the ad will start over being polarising because if you are not an Elton fan it's just meh! I also agree it totally buys into the notion that JL i s a store for middle class mummies whose kids have piano lessons! I think overall this year's ad is a "miss"!

Orchardgreen · 15/11/2018 08:45

JL should have spent the money improving their customer service department. Earlier this year they outsourced it to Capita I believe. Now if you have any problems the shops tell you to phone the call centre. No sensible communication between the two.

ShalomJackie · 15/11/2018 08:45

To the poster who said JL won't care if we like it or not I heard this morning that their sales went up by 44% when they released the first new style ad. I suspect they will very much care.

SoyDora · 15/11/2018 08:46

They have started selling keyboards and pianos again.

nellieellie · 15/11/2018 08:48

Hmm, so basically just glorifying and showcasing a famous and immensely rich person. Nothing against EJ, but I don’t think it’s at all suitable as a Christmas ad.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 15/11/2018 08:48

Are the Elton John's Branded ones?

PeonyTruffle · 15/11/2018 08:51

It's a nice ad but it's not really festive imo.
I get the sentiment but it's not as good as previous years!

Rosehip10 · 15/11/2018 08:52

They have started selling keyboards and pianos again.

Quick search on the JL website suggests not.

marine04 · 15/11/2018 08:54

I think it's great. They won't want to do the same old thing every year and rest on their laurels. There was an outcry the year they did the Bear and the Hare because it was animation.

Lollygaggles · 15/11/2018 08:55

I loved it. This one touched me far more than the usual ones.

chaplin1409 · 15/11/2018 08:56

I also felt it was a let down after last year's.

EyUpOurKid · 15/11/2018 08:56

Rubbish. Thoroughly disappointed. I "get it"...but it's shit. It's a no from me, Johm Lewis.

Kewqueue · 15/11/2018 08:56

I liked it. I thought last year's was awful.

SoyDora · 15/11/2018 08:57

Just seen them on there Rosehip10. I wasn’t making it up for fun Grin

Also the blurb from the advert says something along the lines of ‘John Lewis are selling pianos and keyboards for the first time in 70 years’.

LightastheBreeze · 15/11/2018 08:57

Apparently there is going to be a wooden piano for £1500 according to this

merlotmummy14 · 15/11/2018 08:57

I absolutely loved it. Thought it told an effective brand story that was easy to follow, appropriately targeted their market segmentation (30 to 60 year olds with high disposable incomes) with the celebrity endorsement and had a lovely Christmas vibe while still thinking slightly outside of the box. DP and I have Christmas tradition of ranking Christmas Adverts (it might be weird but I study marketing and we both love christmas so it's perfect tradition for us) and we gave it the highest score we've ever given an christmas ad of 9.5 out of 10.
