I really usually enjoy the JL Christmas ad but this year it’s bloody awful!

Are they going to be selling cuddly Eltons?

AlliKaneErikson · 17/11/2018 03:17

As a music teacher, anything that promotes the ‘gift of music’ is a bonus, especially in today’s climate (I know it’s a gift that lasts a lifetime sort of idea, not just music in particular they are getting at).

Bring back Monty!!

user764329056 · 17/11/2018 04:12

Awful money-wasting crap

LucheroTena · 17/11/2018 04:14

What’s it got to do with JL? They don’t even sell pianos.

Can’t even sell ad products off the back unless they are planning range of novelty EJ glasses.

Sparklingbrook · 17/11/2018 07:26

They do sell pianos but that's not the point of the advert.

tigerroo · 17/11/2018 07:33

I had to watch it 3 times before I got that they were following Elton's career back in time. I initially thought it was an ad about Elton impersonators Grin

F1annelsheets · 17/11/2018 07:35

I loved it.

Hereiam1980 · 17/11/2018 07:39

I love the song big time but it’s got naff all to do with Christmas! Promoting Elton more than anything 😕

LucheroTena · 17/11/2018 07:52

I hope they didn’t pay him for this shite- HE should be paying THEM!

OliviaStabler · 17/11/2018 08:02

I started my career as a graduate trainee with john Lewis. In the early 90s. In those days, they "didn't advertise because their business was so good they could rely on word of mouth". I remember getting royally rollocked by the training manager when I suggested they should advertise...And now, every magazine you open is chock full of John Lewis/Waitrose adverts and they spend millions on their Christmas TV ad. Times change I guess!!

They also didn't open on bank holidays or Sundays for a long while. Thank goodness they got rid of the old guard and (mostly) the boards are full of forward thinkers now.

lissie123 · 17/11/2018 08:53

JL are selling Elton John graphics t shirts on the back of the Christmas advert for forty quid!!!

beeefcake · 17/11/2018 08:58

@lissie123 the problem is some people will actually buy the bloody things!!!!!

Justmuddlingalong · 17/11/2018 09:05

I saw it yesterday for the 1st time. Very disappointing. Not festive, not up to their usual standard and just another example of broken Britain. Wink

sliceoflife · 17/11/2018 09:23

Anyone remember when all John Lewis stores used to close on Monays so staff could have a two day ‘weekend’ on Sunday and Monday? This was before the Sunday trading laws changed in1994. Only 24 years ago, but such a different era.

PunishmentSnart · 17/11/2018 09:46

Oh my god- the Boots one is lovely Smile

RingtheBells · 17/11/2018 09:50

I remember JL closing on a Monday, at least they still close on Boxing Day

janice511 · 17/11/2018 09:58

Agree very disappointing . Do they have a new marketing team?

janice511 · 17/11/2018 10:00

Boots is my favourite and totally realistic . It really hits home.

KingsScorn · 17/11/2018 10:15

Didn't like it - all about Elton John (no wonder he agreed to do it!)
He had a long feud with his mum, so the part with his mum seems so fake
He could be a lovely man... but he's had some bad press that says otherwise - to the extent that I don't like listening to his music now (irrational I know!)
We've always had a piano in the house (and other instruments and lessons and offers of lessons) and my son has barely shown any interest in learning to play Envy Wink

fieryginger · 17/11/2018 10:19

My DH is a fan of the JL snowman advert. I thought he'd hate it, but he got quite choked up, something he rarely does where telly is concerned. Job done IMO if it can illicit such a response from a bloke in his mid 50's.

derxa · 17/11/2018 11:05

Oh my god- the Boots one is lovely Is that the lipstick one? I hate it

EdWinchester · 17/11/2018 12:27

Bleurgh - the boots ad is hideous.

My teenage niece made me laugh. She said if her mum joined a rock choir she would disown her, ‘not fucking sing about it’!

SoyDora · 17/11/2018 12:28

I think the Boots one is shit too.
