I really usually enjoy the JL Christmas ad but this year it’s bloody awful!

@PunishmentSnart sorry 😢. So sad but makes people stop and think hopefully!

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 16/11/2018 22:15

I absolutely loved it! Had me in tears. I think it was so sentimental and there’s so much truth behind it; something you buy today could change a life forever.

I've bought my DS an axe.

Fck fckkk fcckkkkkk

MrsG31811 · 16/11/2018 22:43

I thought it was a nice little ad.. my fave was the 2015 JL ad, but maybe that was because it was filmed on my street 😊

GabsAlot · 16/11/2018 22:56

bear and hare everytime

Mummyshark2018 · 16/11/2018 22:58

It is shit. Very self indulgent of Elton john. Could they not have picked someone less privileged but equally as successful like adele. Seems like an Elton John plug!

pollymere · 16/11/2018 23:08

Too busy watching Kevin The Carrot as Little Red Riding Hood.... spoiler alert but my dd has an allergy to parsnips no one takes seriously so this makes me lol.

onthenaughtystepagain · 16/11/2018 23:43

I still want to know what was on the big box that the boy couldn't wait to give to his parents on Christmas morning a few years ago!

As JL, M & S etc are in financial difficulties are these adverts necessary, does anyone go to these stores on the basis of the adverts?

DanielRicciardosSmile · 16/11/2018 23:56

Why is 50s very young to be grandparents? The average age of a first-time mother in the UK is 30, and was around 27 at the time those mothers were being born.

dontalltalkatonce · 17/11/2018 00:04

It's a shitty shit advert.

WoweeZowee · 17/11/2018 00:10

Like wot others have said; it's an Elton John ad. He probs wouldn't be doing it if it weren't for his 'final tour' next year.

Given the current climate, and the fact that JL are a partnership, it would've been nice for them to opt for a warm n fuzzy love-your-neighbour type community theme, I think. 🎄

notdaddycool · 17/11/2018 00:12

I got very bored with the formulaic JL ad each Christmas a couple of years back. Pleased they tried something different but it says Elton John to me not John Lewis.

Weetabixandshreddies · 17/11/2018 00:14

Watching it for the first time I didn't get the relevance but then I saw the ending and it all made sense. I think it's very touching especially as his mum died fairly recently. It seemed very genuine.

LuckyDiamond · 17/11/2018 00:19

and plays private gigs for dictators and oligarchs

Tbf they all do that.

When did Xmas ads start being news?

Paleshelter · 17/11/2018 00:35

I loved it, found it quite emotional. I'm a big Elton John, got his greatest hits album in 1982 when I was 11.

HelenaDove · 17/11/2018 00:37

The Last Leg did a spoof of this new John Lewis ad tonight.

vodkaredbullgirl · 17/11/2018 00:42

totally crap

Ontheboardwalk · 17/11/2018 00:46

Doesnt Elton hate his mother and hasn’t spoken to her in years? Is she getting a cut from the advert?

Looking forward to my Elton cuddly toys and plug in sparking Elton’s from John Lewis on the back of this ad

Ontheboardwalk · 17/11/2018 00:47

Sorry just seen his mother has passed away. Crass comment but sentiment remains

LoudJazzHands · 17/11/2018 00:53

I think it's a load of crap. Just my opinion, but it does nothing for me.

Paleshelter · 17/11/2018 01:05

Meant to say I'm a big Elton John fan!

ToftyAC · 17/11/2018 01:48

Thought the add was quite endearing and sweet, but faaaarrrrr to feckin long 🤦🏼‍♀️

florabel · 17/11/2018 01:56

I didn't like it either. It feels as though it is a promo for Elton's last tour before his announced retirement. They have completely glossed over his more unpleasant actions and traits and that is why it feels false. I can think of many talented musical people they could have used instead. I admit that my favourite ad was the one with Mog the Cat. It had whimsy, humour, tragedy, camaraderie, sharing, neighbourliness and a happy ending. It felt just right for Christmas!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 17/11/2018 02:11

Anothermanic - you wretch!! I'd also forgotten that advert and now I'm sobbing like a loon - it's why I pay a fortune every year to take my boys back to the UK from Australia to see their grandpa, because I never want that to be the way things go in my family.
