...to think that if Comic Relief are going to do a "Woman Wednesday" blog about "inspirational female figures", it should have an inspirational female figure in it?

Comic Relief are doing a new weekly blog, about inspirational women.

"Women Wednesday’s is our new weekly column for Gender Justice month here at Comic Relief, where we will be giving the spotlight to one inspirational female figure per week. We focus on women who have created change and spearheaded movements for other women, and stood up against discrimination against gender and sexuality."

Fantastic, right? They've got links to all kinds of amazing women, working in very challenging conditions across the world, who are helping to create a better world for everyone, not just themselves. What a brilliant blog theme! What brilliant, inspirational woman are we all going to learn about today, I wonder?

Well. Here's who they picked as their "inspirational female figure": www.comicrelief.com/news/women-wednesdays-heres-why-lili-elbe-our-inspirational-figure-week

Women deserve better, Comic Relief. You've really screwed up on this one.

There's 1 month of the year dedicated to inspirational women.

1 post a week for 4 weeks.

4/52 (less than 10%) dedicated to 50% of the population.

Except no. For inspiration 1 of 4, who could have had any other of the 48 weeks (90%) of the year, instead takes a woman's slot. If the aim is to minimize women's representation further, this is going to do it.

Ghanagirl · 15/11/2018 13:43

Very interesting that those who think equality is better than EQUITY are defending the right of person (white male) who is already ahead of the race then being treated equally which then puts them further ahead.
See transgender female sports women for perfect examples of this blatant hypocrisy

IfNotNowBernard · 15/11/2018 13:43

No time to read the thread but. ...VICTORIA WOOD died recently. VICTORIA fucking WOOD. She's my inspirational woman.
Comic relief you absolute dingbats.

naicepineapple · 15/11/2018 13:44

@IfNotNowBernard come and tell us about her on my thread BrewCake

oooompa · 15/11/2018 13:44

I've complained. I'm horrified at the treatment of women nowadays.

Anyone who is complaining might also highlight to comic relief that campaigning with Laverne Cox, a child rape apologist, is not a good look for them.

Ghanagirl · 15/11/2018 13:45

Gosh yes Victoria wood, I’m even more sad.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 15/11/2018 13:45

Thanks for your input. I think you misunderstood. I didn't mean you are shit, or your ideas are necessarily shit. I clearly meant, and illustrated, that equality is not really what we think it is

Equity is the word that best fits most times when someone says equality. Having seen the meme you would really choose equality, would you?

Rat Congratulations for having seen the version of that meme with the 3rd element, without the barrier at all! Maybe you missed this one. But I am enjoying the word salad Smile

SheCameFromGreeceSheHadaThirst · 15/11/2018 13:46

that meme assumes people who use the word "equality" want everyone to have the same material things

I have utterly no inkling how you extrapolated 'material things' from the meme. It makes very clear that differing levels of facilitation are required to provide equity of opportunity, and that creating such equity may require different, rather than equal, inputs.

Genuinely, where does "that meme assumes people who use the word "equality" want everyone to have the same material things" come from?

SheCameFromGreeceSheHadaThirst · 15/11/2018 13:49

I understood the meme perfectly thanks.

Sorry, sweetheart, you really did not.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 15/11/2018 13:50

No-one thinks women should have urinals in the name of equality That's the point of the meme. Have a box if you need one, if you don't need one let someone else have access to it!

SheCameFromGreeceSheHadaThirst · 15/11/2018 13:50

Very interesting that those who think equality is better than EQUITY are defending the right of person (white male) who is already ahead of the race then being treated equally which then puts them further ahead.

But of course.

IfNotNowBernard · 15/11/2018 13:55

I'll be over later naice Smile

CaveMum · 15/11/2018 13:57

I’m disappointed but not shocked. The erasure of women is terrifying.

blueskiesandforests · 15/11/2018 13:57

I totally missed that Victoria Wood had died! Shock

RatRolyPoly · 15/11/2018 13:57

Sorry curious but that meme really is meaningless! I'm not choosing anything based on that meme because it ascribes meanings to words that is just plain wrong Confused

Let's grab that dictionary again shall we:

Equality: the state of being equal, especially in status, rights, or opportunities.

Equity: the quality of being fair and impartial.

So your meme is completely wrong about which word describes which situation, as Equality is quite clearly the word which describes equal opportunities, such as the opportunity of those figures to see the game beyond the fence.

Now let's add liberation...

Liberation: the action of setting someone free from imprisonment, slavery, or oppression.

Aaaand seeing as "oppression" is cruel, unfair or unequal treatment, liberating someone from it is in fact giving them equality.

I don't know who drew that meme but I suspect whoever it was really, REALLY hates those annoying feminist who advocate "equality", such that they've even grabbed the colouring pencils to try and discredit that aim. What they should have grabbed was a dictionary.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 15/11/2018 14:03

Victoria Wood died two years ago.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 15/11/2018 14:05

Aaaand seeing as "oppression" is cruel, unfair or unequal treatment, liberating someone from it is in fact giving them equality.

Not necessarily. Enslaved people in the American south were liberated from the oppression of slavery, but they still don't have equality.

RatRolyPoly · 15/11/2018 14:08

Enslaved people in the American south were liberated from the oppression of slavery, but they still don't have equality.

Yes, you're absolutely right of course. They're liberated from one form of oppression and so are equally "free" in terms of slavery, but that doesn't equal equality in other areas. Hopefully we both agree the whole area is a tad bit more nuanced than can be conveyed through the medium of meme Smile

MartaHallard · 15/11/2018 14:08

Well he became a nazi and did all sorts for them including involuntary sterilizations, so I'm not sure 'reputable' is the term to use.

Moaning, I suspected that might be the case, on seeing date and place of the surgery, and the reason I Googled him. I didn't want to throw accusations around without evidence.

It's deeply concerning that the first couple of pages of Google search results are all about Warnekros' involvement with Lili Elbe, making it all seem heroic and positive, with no reference to his later history. Someone ought to go in and edit his Wiki page.

Is this person, Kurt Warnekros, really the kind of individual CR, or anyone else, really wants to be even remotely associated with?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 15/11/2018 14:11

Equality: the state of being equal, especially in status, rights, or opportunities. So everyone gets the same chances... a box in this case

Equity: the quality of being fair and impartial. So everyone who needs a box gets one!

I used to be a lecturer, we spent a lot of time pondering how to make our lessons wholly accessible to all students, even ( but not especially) those with SEN.

Lazy colleagues took the SEN modified work methods and gave them to everyone.

Less lazy too the SEN modified work methods and gave them to everyone and then gave extra time/help to those with SEN.

Those of us who properly understood gave a range of resources intended to stretch and challenge every student regardless of any SEN.

So, whilst I suspect much of this is semantic to you, equality of opportunity is not the same as opportunity for success. The first opens doors for everyone. The second aims to support those who need help to pass through those doors!

I know which I think is preferable - to each according to their needs

RatRolyPoly · 15/11/2018 14:18

I know which I think is preferable - to each according to their needs

I think so too, we don't disagree. All we seem to disagree on is that when a feminist (or anyone really) says, "I want equality", this is what they mean.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 15/11/2018 14:20

What is?

I am a feminist, I never say anything about equality I always use equity and I know precisely what I mean by it.

But your previous posts seem to have argued both ends against the middle and left everyone in need of a sit down - or a box!

RatRolyPoly · 15/11/2018 14:24

On a side note, I've just been Googling Lili on the back of this thread.

Almost every source reports Lili as having "rudimentary ovaries" in her abdomen, and being before the age of genetic testing it is now presumed she had klinefelter syndrome, so was intersex.

I mean she was a woman to me anyway, even before I read that. But I do wonder if anyone may not have so quickly posted their outrage on this thread had they known that. Or would there really have been cries of, "how dare this intersex woman get recognition that should only be reserved for women with pure chromosomes!"?

RatRolyPoly · 15/11/2018 14:27

I am a feminist, I never say anything about equality I always use equity and I know precisely what I mean by it.

I'm also a feminist, and I talk in terms of equality, because equity is something you have in a house or a business (I work with money), so for me "equality" is a perfectly acceptable term for what we both agree with. Lots of feminists use the word "equality" this way, and they're not wrong, it really does mean the second box in your meme!

We're arguing over nothing here. Feminists who say they want equality aren't saying they want the first picture from your meme, they're saying they want the second. They could use the word "equity" instead, but the two can perfectly easily be used interchangeably in this regard.

RiverTam · 15/11/2018 14:28

people with Kleinfelter's syndrome are male.
