Songs - how did it’s meaning get so lost?

Sparked from another thread that was slightly off topic but reminded me how irritated I get by it-
Anyone else feel a slow burning rage when people mistake the meaning of songs so for example I have been to a fair few weddings where the couple walk onto the dance floor and their song is ‘marry you’ or ‘every breath you take’
Now I know it’s their choice, their song so who cares but I can’t help that little build up in side that makes me what to grab the mic and shout ‘listen to the words people!!’
Just want to point out that I’ve never actually done that, I stand there and smile
Am I alone in getting irritated by something so pointless?

We had Lou Reed Perfect Day. I thought long and hard as some people think it’s a love song whilst others say it’s about drug addiction.

VisitorsEntrance · 15/11/2018 19:11

So what is ‘Oh What a Night’ about them?

PeevedOfPortishead · 15/11/2018 19:21

shadylady Jenny put something in his Tennessee whisky no law man was ever gonna find!

Beingginger · 15/11/2018 19:26

We had Lonestar as our first dance, DH and I listen to heavy metal and it’s not very wedding appropriate!
I walked down the aisle to she by Elvis Costello and walked back out to songbird.
We did play some metal music but the aunts sat round the dance floor were a bit Hmm !!

littlemisscomper · 15/11/2018 19:47

A friend of mine had 'Beauty and the Beast' for her first dance song. I pointed out when she told me she was planning it that it wasn't overly flattering of her new husband, but she insisted it was her favourite song so that was that!

Camper82 · 15/11/2018 19:58

I walked in to To Be Loved by Jackie Wilson, and walked out to Wouldn’t It Be Nice by Beah Boys. We did have Stuck With You by Huey Lewis and The News at the reception, always makes me smile.

FuckKnuckle · 15/11/2018 20:11

@JaretsGirlfren - you have impeccable taste! Quite a few of their songs actually have lovely lyrics when you listen to them. I like "All Figured Out", although the lines including the words of masturbation and erection in the chorus might raise a few eyebrows in the congregation...

Rightsaidmabel · 15/11/2018 20:32

Here I go :
How did "it's meaning get so lost?"
"It's " means IT IS.If you insert an unnecessary comma, it will be there in place of the 'i' of the word 'is'.You are asking "How did 'it is' meaning get so lost ?"This does not even make sense.
"Its "means: belonging to " it". Or to be technical, it is a possessive pronoun like 'his 'and 'hers'.
So "its" meaning has sadly, got lost indeed.
You meant to ask: "how did its meaning get so lost?"
I only write these explanations because they have clearly got lost in the education process, and some of our comprehension and sense gets lost in the process. It's sad.Language is rich and rewarding,we are losing it.

JaretsGirlfren · 15/11/2018 21:06

FuckKnuckle thank you! They’re my favourite band, I love all of their songs, JR is fantastic live.

mazv1953 · 15/11/2018 21:07

Apparently my dad sang, "I Wish I was Single Again" at their wedding reception to my mum! She was furious ...

onanothertrain · 15/11/2018 21:07

We walked out to highway to hell and didnt have a first dance but the first song played was build me up buttercup

runningawaywithtomhardy · 15/11/2018 21:08

We had the song smoother me by the used. The tittle sounds a bit dodgy but the lyrics are beautiful -
Let me be the one who calls you baby all the time
Surely you can take some comfort knowing that you're mine
Just hold me tight, lay by my side
And let me be the one who calls you baby all the time

I found my place in the world
Could stare at your face for the rest of my days
Now I can breathe, turn my insides out and smother me
Warm and alive I'm all over you
Would you smother me?

We are both into emo and pop punk bands so this song fits perfectly our fave band and a beautiful song.

Knittink · 15/11/2018 21:13

Are you being unreasonable to 'feel a slow burning rage' at other people's music choices. Ummmm... yup Grin.

People take what they want from a song. And often the melody may be what they love most about it. Not everyone's interested in what the songwriter meant by the words.

Poodles1980 · 15/11/2018 21:16

My first dance was need your love so bad by Fleetwood Mac- (Peter green incarnation)

BasinHaircut · 15/11/2018 21:23

poodles that was very nearly our first dance!

PrincipalVernon · 15/11/2018 21:29

Rightsaidmabel - wow, sorry I didn’t realise MN was marked in the same way a school essay was.
I was on my phone just typing quickly, but thanks for the lesson- so grateful Hmm

I think Mabel was probably trying to point out that if you're so pedantic about people failing to get the meanings of songs right, then she's entitled to be pedantic about your grammar. Maybe you could join Mabel at the teacher's table and mark people's analysis of song lyrics like a listening comprehension? Grin

PrincipalVernon · 15/11/2018 21:38

Think I should have just put ‘lighthearted’ at the start...

No first dance for us and I haven't got a clue what was played when we walked in or out (we had a classical guitarist playing). I'm such a romantic.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 15/11/2018 21:46

We had our first dance to Lonestar.
DJ hadn't heard of them so we had to provide the CD.

DoJo · 15/11/2018 22:07

Due to a bit of drama with a CD player, I almost ended up walking down the aisle to 'Let's Get Ready to Rumble' by PJ and Duncan! Fortunately, it was spotted at the last minute and I ended up with our chosen song, which was instrumental and therefore relatively non-contentious.

I have been to a number of events where 'May You Never' by John Martyn which has some really touching lyrics, but also mentions being in a bar-room fight and losing your woman overnight which isn't massively appropriate for a wedding.

PrincipalVernon · 15/11/2018 22:09

Let’s get ready to rumble I think would be THE BEST song GrinGrin
That’s really made me laugh

I walked down the aisle to the Bridal March but we left to the theme tune from Happy Days 😍
Signing the register was to God Only Knows and Groovy Kind of Love.
First dance was You and Me by the Wannadies.

What is Oh What a Night about?!

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 15/11/2018 22:37

My cousin had a cd of Elvis tunes playing for background music at the registry office before she arrived. Obviously there was a fair amount of singing along, and she arrived just after the entire congregation had finished belting out "you've lost that loving feeling".

Best friend is a gaga fan. No first dance but was bopping away to Bad Romance and prancing around the groom. Still in her wedding dress, apparently unaware of the irony and raised eyebrows!
