To ask what’s wrong with fur

Compared to leather? Why is one socially acceptable and one not. Is it all to do with animal cruelty? in which case why is there not a drive to raise standards, like in the meat industry, rather than boycott the product? I’m not trying to be inflammatory just genuinely curious!

I saw a video years ago when I was only 12 or 13. It haunts me still. I remember reading that it was set up by ARA but omg. It was horrific.

Surfskatefamily · 14/11/2018 21:04

Thats why i think mink is wrong...im saying im happy with furr only from animals we eat too. I couldnt really have made that more clear

UpstartCrow · 14/11/2018 21:04

There's a video from China that shows a raccoon dog being badly stunned before being skinned while still conscious.
Gassing is not humane imo.
Its unnecessary as there is an easy, inexpensive and humane way to euthanase many fur bearing animals.

Iwannasnack · 14/11/2018 21:04

Yes! It was the presenter discussing fur while wearing a leather jacket that made me wonder!

DaedricLordSlayer · 14/11/2018 21:08

Branleuse well if the video was anything to go by, its in quite poor countries, so why have the expense of gas and waste time gassing, if you are skilled enough to be able to whip of a pelt seconds? (i think were it was filmed are well known for there lack of compassion for animals too)

LapinR0se · 14/11/2018 21:25

Unfortunately most clothing passes through supply chains which are rife with human rights abuses, serious environmental damage etc.
Honestly a piece of vintage fur is less hateful than a £3 primark jumper, ethically speaking.
I dress well and have tried to stick to secondhand and vintage shops for a couple of years now.

sanityisamyth · 14/11/2018 21:31

I saw a video of a dog being skinned alive once. It was truly horrific and I'll never forget it.

bourbonbiccy · 14/11/2018 22:10

@LapinR0se that's exactly what I want to start doing. I must admit I always thought I was quite aware of these things, but I was so naive.
The absolute devastation that is caused by the manufacture/ production of our clothing is horrendous. It's only since I had my DS I have started to think of the world we leave behind and I will be doing my little bit.

Branleuse · 14/11/2018 22:10

Youre not going to whip off a pelt in seconds though are you. A live animal is going to struggle and bite you.
Im not saying it never happens, but whether it happens routinely, or is any worse than intensive meat farming and industrial scale dlaughter of pigs etc is something im not convinced of.

RiverTam · 14/11/2018 22:13

I have heard a bit about down being cruel, I won’t buy a down coat or duvet because of it.

Avegemitesandwich · 14/11/2018 22:14

Do they routinely skin them alive though?

To be honest I struggle to see how it's any more cruel than the meat or dairy industries.

Avegemitesandwich · 14/11/2018 22:16

I dont wear fur by the way, but this whole thing of it being deemed 'so cruel' by people who happily eat meat and dairy makes me a bit Hmm

BorisAndDoris · 14/11/2018 22:26

The best fur tends to come from carnivorous animals. We don't eat dogs and cats because the meat apparently tastes awful. So, the soft fluffy fur you get clothing like jacket trims or bobble hat Pom Poms tends to be cheap Chinese fur ripped off dogs, many whilst still alive. It's actually cheaper than a convincing faux fur.

Fur only animals, as others have said, are kept in tiny cages to ensure they don't fight or damage their skin because pelts are worth more unscarred.

Leather however is a meat byproduct. Cows in the UK are subject to far stricter humane treatment laws so even though it's not a great, fantastic sunshine and rainbows life, for most it isn't that bad.

Ubertasha2 · 14/11/2018 22:37

Anyone who wears fur or supports the fur industry in any way is quite frankly, a cunt, in my book.

Wtf is wrong with fake fur???

NoSpend19 · 14/11/2018 22:37

Not as simple as saying leather is a by product

Ubertasha2 · 14/11/2018 22:39

And no, I don’t wear leather either.

meow1989 · 14/11/2018 22:43

Atrocious conditions and torture of animals for human vanity. Even garments made with material where animals aren't slaughtered (eventually) such as angora rabbits are horrific, just youtube if you need convincing.
The meat industry is at least regulated.
There's no reason to wear real fur, fake fur is readily available. Hypocritical though t might be as a meat eater and someone who has worn leather, if you wear fur you get all the judgement from me.

meow1989 · 14/11/2018 22:44

Although thinking about it, I don't think I have any leather clothes or shoes any more...

thighofrelief · 14/11/2018 22:50

Is leather a by product of the meat industry? Or are they farmed separately?

HeckyPeck · 14/11/2018 23:02

But we are kidding ourselves if we think that industrial farming (pig farming - sow crates anyone, dairy - calf hutches, permanently pregnant cows who have babies taken at birth etc, and battery chickens) has higher welfare standards than a fur farm.

Yep.

HeckyPeck · 14/11/2018 23:05

There's no reason to wear real fur, fake fur is readily available.

Agreed. Equally it could be said there’s no reason to eat meat when fake meat is readily available.

Leah91 · 14/11/2018 23:06

Faux fur isn't ideal either as it's made of plastic

meow1989 · 14/11/2018 23:21

@HeckyPeck - entirely fair point.

Pinkyyy · 14/11/2018 23:30

I wear both mink and fox furs. I find it to be hypocritical when someone eats meat and/or wears leather but objects to fur. I can tell the difference between real and faux and personally don't have a problem with the meat not being used. I realise that real fur is quite widely frowned upon now but I just think each to their own really

ComtesseDeSpair · 14/11/2018 23:39

I’m an awful person and I just don’t care. Meat, fur, leather, dairy, it’s all the same. Unless you know exactly where your organic, fair trade, high welfare, locally slaughtered meat and leather originated from then you have no moral high ground. Eat cheap meat (or indeed pretty much any chain restaurant meat) and wear cheap leather and it’s orgins were just as dirty as any fur.
