How much do you earn per anum before tax? What is your current position/job/career? Do you enjoy it?

Last year according to my tax return I earned £464,000 in a job that is very niche. It doesn't really have a title and it is almost impossible to get into. It's boring. It's dull. I try to liven it up when I can by being silly. The admin kills me, I hate it. I earned £9,550 today but raising the invoice and doing all the other admin shit just kills me. I want out. I cannot do anything else it is either 'rock' or 'hard place'. I dream of being a Postie (or similar) and having just 20% of what I earn now, but that's impossible because Postie's (or similar) get paid jack shit.

IAmNotLikeThem · 12/11/2018 18:26

Trapped. No mortgage either.

PrivateDoor · 12/11/2018 18:56

Hi OP, I am a band 6 midwife, only qualified a few years. It is difficult but not impossible to train with small children (I have three). If you really want it - you can do it!

However if you are looking for a highly paid job then it is not the way to go. The pay is pretty crap. It is incredibly stressful. I work on average 4 hours a week unpaid overtime because you can not just leave if it is busy or if it just isn't suitable timing (if birth is imminent or if she just has had a general anaesthetic for example). Working nights and over xmas etc is harder than I could have ever imagined.

However I cannot see myself doing any other job.

NameChanger22 · 12/11/2018 18:57

I earn 13k (working 4 full days per week). I work in a government department doing secretarial work, it's a very long-term contract with an agency. I enjoy the work, but there aspects of the job I don't like. I would have left a long time ago, but I like working 4 days instead of 5 and I can't find similar hours elsewhere. I thought I would have a better career and pay than this, I did well at school, have a degree and I have worked hard all my life.

ezeria · 12/11/2018 19:02

PrivateDoor what qualifications do you have? I was hoping up do an access to HE

I can't remember what it is PA and It's pro rata 'cause I am on jobshare. It's not amazing but I do 18.5 hours a week for about £900 a month. Which isn't bad. I don't mind my job at all. Police first response.

AutumnGrace · 12/11/2018 19:04

mamaduckbone · 12/11/2018 19:06

Just under 40k - senior leader in a primary school. Hard to say whether I like it...yes, it’s varied and can be rewarding and fun, but there are literally not enough hours in the day to even begin to do everything I need to do so it can be stressful and frustrating as well.
