To still be cross at Jeremy Corbin's anorak

It's 11 hours after the event, but at the cenotaph amongst all of the black coats stood Jeremy Corbin in a blue anorak with hood flapping, is this really the best he could do?

Prince Phillip is very old.
Corbyn has no excuse for dressing like a twat on this very important day.

2rebecca · 13/11/2018 18:28

It wasn't a friend's funeral though, it was a very public televised formal commemoration. He doesn't speak for me. I think he is narrow minded and intolerant. Fine be anti-establishment but don't then try to lead the establishment.
I love how dictatorial all the Corbynistas are: "get a grip" "don't have a go" "get a life" "wind your neck in".
Nasty bullies the lot of you. It is possible to dress appropriately and care about other stuff. Why are you taking this so personally? It does start to seem like a creepy personality cult.

user1468942365 · 13/11/2018 18:31

2Rebecca yes. Following the man not the politics. It's unbalanced and cultish. I agree

SillySallySingsSongs · 13/11/2018 18:32

Don’t have a go at the man who speaks for the people!

He certainly doesn't speak for the people.

tinstar · 13/11/2018 18:35

2Rebecca - EXACTLY!

Nobody is taking this personally. Pointing out that it's ridiculous that a thread about the fucking colour of his coat has run to 26 pages is not "taking things personally." There's plenty of things to criticise Corbyn for; the colour of his coat is not one of them.

Hi Gingerrogered.

Regarding this:

Name me one (there have been many) Socialist state which has not repressed it's people and curtailed freedom of speech? Name me one Socialist state which has been a success?

Well, I could name more than one country that has not repressed it's people and curtailed freedom of speech under "socialist" leaders. Most countries in South America have avoided this under such rule at one point or another in recent decades, actually. Brazil, for example, was under quase-socialist rule for the last couple of decades, and although they were super-corrupt, they never showed any tendency towards dictatorship or censorship.

As for success, well again, there have been numerous, but a good example would be Bolivia under Evo Morales. He's been president for 12 years as leader of the "Movement for Socialism" party, during which time the economy has grown significantly and basically every social indicator has improved (health, education, poverty levels, etc.).

Just something to bear in mind. There are countries out there that don't make the news that much.

I'm not even a labour voter and have no strong opinion on Corbyn, but I do think people need to get a grip if they think this whole thing about a blue raincoat is enough to get "cross" about.

Canshopwillshop · 13/11/2018 18:45

It was a sodding anorak! Looked like he should have been train spotting! People do judge others by what they wear, especially at such a major event televised across the world. It showed a lack of dignity and respect.

duffeldaisy · 13/11/2018 18:48

It's extraordinarily shallow to judge someone for wearing a raincoat in the rain.

He turned up. He also has an anti-war voting record, unlike most of the politicians there. He has consistently voted against wars and against selling arms. He has consistently worked to get peace, and was involved in the peace treaty in Northern Ireland coming together.

I'd much rather a politician like that paying respects than one who votes for wars, who profits from the arms trade, no matter how smart their coat or massive their poppy.

derxa · 13/11/2018 18:48

All he had to do was turn up on time wearing a black coat, wear a poppy you could actually see, hold up his wreath then place it on the right spot, bow his head and then go back to his place. Plus mime to the National Anthem with good grace. He didn't manage all of those things

Wednesdaypig · 13/11/2018 18:57

But WHY do people judge others by what they wear? So someone who has impeccable values (not necessarily Corbin) also has to look the part otherwise they are not taken seriously? What a shallow world we live in.

SillySallySingsSongs · 13/11/2018 19:00

and was involved in the peace treaty in Northern Ireland coming together.

No he really wasn't. Hmm

SinisterBumFacedCat · 13/11/2018 19:04

Women are constantly judge on what they wear. Women and Corbyn Grin

Veryfinethreadmyfriend · 13/11/2018 19:05

Ah Corbyn - the most middle class of them all! Grew up in an actual Manor House in Shropshire, went to Prep School and Grammar school. Nothing wrong with any of those things but he’s a hypocrite. I don’t want to vote for anyone at the moment, not labour, not Tory, but you know what? No, it doesn’t actually affect anything or anyone turning up in a crap anorak, however, we all know that what he was doing was making a statement and giving a middle finger to the establishment. On a day which was more important than him or any other politician and their personal views. Saying ‘get over yourselves it doesn’t matter what he was wearing’ is naive. On this day, actually, as leader of the opposition, it really does matter and he should have just shut up and done the right thing - which was to tow the traditional line and wear a smart coat.

longwayoff · 13/11/2018 19:06

This is the state of political discourse in his country. And at least half of posters here would complain and feel actively insulted if European politicians were laughing at them for their belief that they have, and can articulate, a firm grasp of events.

ForalltheSaints · 13/11/2018 19:10

For many years I have wished that the Cenotaph would be an event without politics. The Royal Family, military leaders, people from the British Legion and representatives from the Commonwealth nations and territories laying wreaths. Perhaps one politician to represent Parliament.

I would not want Jeremy Corbyn there, but even less would I want Tony Blair, who sent troops to Iraq without properly equipping them.

Limensoda · 13/11/2018 19:15

Why does that make him a hypocrite?
Do you think people born into middle class or upper class homes cannot believe in socialism? So, working class people cannot or should not become Tory MPs?

Wednesdaypig · 13/11/2018 19:16

If he was 'making a statement' he would have worn jeans and a sweatshirt not a black suit. I suppose that's another reason to berate him, the fact that he can't even make a decent 'statement'. Confused

HauntedPencil · 13/11/2018 19:17

Well I would agree with that but not necessarily about the coat

frufru27 · 13/11/2018 19:21

This is a totally non issue and I think people/media should be so ashamed. His coat is irrelevant and tbh he’s never been into ‘power dressing’ it’s a not new. Also what kind of a message are we giving younger generations that it’s ok to bash someone on their appearance...and more to the point it’s overshadowed the fact that we were commentating the deaths of 900,000 men!!

missbloomsbury · 13/11/2018 19:24

ffs he’s a member of the government not a 7 year old! You can’t applaud him for ‘turning up’ like he’s a troubled teenager! If you know anything about how the Great War started, it was because of self-opinionated members of government and army generals who without a second thought, sent 880,000 young men to their deaths and for what? Basically a petulant argument between 2 royal cousins. The least Corbyn can do is to respect the moment and not make a political point out of it 😡

HauntedPencil · 13/11/2018 19:35

Caring about Remembrance Day and thinking Jeremy Corbyn has shit coats is not mutually exclusive you know.

sofato5miles · 13/11/2018 19:37

This thread is incredibly interesting. Those who believe that a possible international leader should not show respect by his clothes are incredibly out of touch with the rest of the world. Clothes are an identity marker. I am certainly not a Tory but a person who comprehend but willfully subverts dressing protocols is a dangerous, egotistical outlier.

This goes beyond UK politics and is worrisome.
