To still be cross at Jeremy Corbin's anorak

It's 11 hours after the event, but at the cenotaph amongst all of the black coats stood Jeremy Corbin in a blue anorak with hood flapping, is this really the best he could do?

Until we stop prioritising style over substance we will get the leaders we deserve.

I can't believe some people think clothes are more important than policy.

But NOBODY has said this. The fact that some of us dislike Corbyn turning up at the cenotaph in an anorak and feel moved to exercise our right to comment on it, does NOT mean we think it's more important than policy and all the ills in the world fgs. Angry

I'm a member of the Labour Party, have voted for them all my life, work for a charity, give monthly donations to a homeless charity, have volunteered for worthwhile causes etc. I DO care about lots of really important things. I also happen to be irritated by the anorak. It's a daily fight for me to overlook all the stupid things that man does and try to see the bigger picture.

SillySallySingsSongs · 12/11/2018 18:51

I don't blame him. It wasn't a service - it was a variety show with a Remembrance theme - entertainment based almost from start to finish. It was awful!

No it wasn't. My DH was there. I'll tell him it was a variety show. Hmm

The80sweregreat · 12/11/2018 18:52

It had been raining. He looked ok.
I'm not a fan of J C but there are bigger things to get worked up about.

Talkstotrees · 12/11/2018 18:55

Can’t be bothered to read the thread.

Yes YABU. I am no fan of the man but 1) I liked the understated poppy and the rain coat and 2) Why on earth are you so bothered?

Grrrrrrt · 12/11/2018 18:57

I don't much care for Corbyn, but with domestic and international politics being in the state their in I really can't be bothered with the disctraction of choice of outfit.

Limensoda · 12/11/2018 18:59

Will somebody please send poor Corbyn a list of do's and dont's for all occasions, as laid down by those who have no fucking clue what's really important in life and see clothes as an indicator of character.

Thymeout · 12/11/2018 19:01

This is the man who thought it was appropriate as a young MP to organise an Anti-Fascist march on 11/11/86 ending up at the Cenotaph to lay a wreath to Blair Peach, an activist killed by police brutality.

The same man who, as newly elected Leader of the LP, attended a ceremony in St Paul's commemorating the Battle of Britain and offended a great many people by not singing the national anthem, because he didn't believe in it.

Like tinstar, I'd like a Leader whose policies I agree with AND who can be trusted to behave like a grown-up instead of an attention-seeking adolescent show-off.

Thingsdogetbetter · 12/11/2018 19:01

The smaller metal poppy is actually the official centenary one. And he's the only party leader who stayed and respectfully clapped the soldiers march after the ceremony. The ONLY one. Coat or no coat. He showed respect away from the photo opportunity of the ceremony while the rest took their smart black coats inside somewhere warm and dry!

The80sweregreat · 12/11/2018 19:02

There was a totally pointless feature on the make up worn by Meghan and Kate on the fail website ( pitting them against each other of course) at yesterday's cenotaph proceedings.
As if this any of this matters when they were there to honour true hero's of the world wars and subsequent wars that were involved or sadly lost their lives.
It all beggars belief.

Aristaeus76 · 12/11/2018 19:07

For all those complaing he wasn't wearing a black tie, Cameron, Blair, and Brown have all worn blue ties at the cenotaph. John Major has even worn a pale blue tie with pink dots at the cenotaph.

berryhead2013 · 12/11/2018 19:08

Hi

Thymeout · 12/11/2018 19:11

Limensoda wearing casual clothes to a formal act of Remembrance when you're one of the principal wreath-layers IS an indicator of character.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 12/11/2018 19:14

It’s not just a raincoat. If it was then no one would care. It’s a petulant statement... that’s why it was annoying.

Aristaeus76 · 12/11/2018 19:16

Also Cameron has worn blue coats to the cenotaph when he was PM. So this is all bollocks.

GiantKitten · 12/11/2018 19:18

It’s called a FESTIVAL of Remembrance.

And Emily’s name is Thornberry.

Just FYI.

SillySallySingsSongs · 12/11/2018 19:21

It’s called a FESTIVAL of Remembrance.

Je still wasn't there.

HTH

SillySallySingsSongs · 12/11/2018 19:21

*He

Thymeout · 12/11/2018 19:22

It's not whether it was black or navy blue. Prince William wore a blue suit to the service in the Abbey, as his father, Prince Charles, did at the Festival on Saturday night.

It's the type of coat, a casual jacket with an anorak hood. In terms of colour, we're probably lucky Corbyn didn't wear black mac, like the IRA.

GiantKitten · 12/11/2018 19:23

The same man who, as newly elected Leader of the LP, attended a ceremony in St Paul's commemorating the Battle of Britain and offended a great many people by not singing the national anthem, because he didn't believe in it

So paying lip service is more important than being true to your beliefs.

I remember some ex-servicemen being much more offended by Fallon’s ostentatious grandstanding at that service & perfectly happy with Corbyn’s quiet reflection. He’s a republican and, afaik, an atheist, but you think he should sing God save the Queen?

OK then.

Thymeout · 12/11/2018 19:26

And a large part of the Festival is a Service, with a hollow square around an altar made of drums, as is traditional on the battle field.

Thymeout · 12/11/2018 19:34

GiantKitten

Yes. Just as I sing Jerusalem without analysing every word. Or the Red Flag, for that matter. It's the national anthem. Even Rooney sings it now.

GiantKitten · 12/11/2018 19:39

I don’t Grin

GiantKitten · 12/11/2018 19:41

I would sing Jerusalem. I would sing Land of Hope & Glory. I will not sing God save the Queen, it’s a terrible anthem.

DappledThings · 12/11/2018 19:43

It’s not just a raincoat ... It’s a petulant statement

In your opinion. In my opinion it is absolutely just a raincoat. I'm flabbergasted this many people care. It was in an appropriately dark colour. It was appropriate for the weather.

It's not like he wore fuchsia leopard print like DH's aunt did to his grandfather's (her FIL's) funeral.

Quickerthanavicar · 12/11/2018 20:10

Good Grief
