To still be cross at Jeremy Corbin's anorak

It's 11 hours after the event, but at the cenotaph amongst all of the black coats stood Jeremy Corbin in a blue anorak with hood flapping, is this really the best he could do?

The point is he didn't care, he has a decent coat he wore it last year. He could have easily left his anorak in the building before going out to the parade when he saw it wasn't raining. He gives just such a poor example. All the service men and women there would have spent hours ensuring their uniform was absolutely up to the highest standard but he couldn't be bothered.

We are all well aware of all the other problems in the world and are quite able to disseminate them as well as this.

BertrandRussell · 12/11/2018 13:49

"Easy to tell if he donated check his expenses"
He is unlikeltby have claimed it in expenses. But he does have a higher level of financial probity in such matters than many of his peers.

mummmy2017 · 12/11/2018 13:53

Everyone constantly judges everything in the first five seconds of seeing or hearing..

He knew, thus was deliberate.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 12/11/2018 14:00

he has a decent coat he wore it last year.
So, was he showing the correct respect last year, but not this year?
If he planned it, it was deliberate and knows what he's doing, why did he show correct respect last year?
What has changed since then?

Limensoda · 12/11/2018 14:11

The thought of him being PM is frightening

Why? What frightens you?
Do you not think our current PM is frightening?
Do you not think the homeless and the poor and the sick people on UC find her and her government frightening?
Just what do you think JC is going to do to you, or anyone for that matter?

longwayoff · 12/11/2018 14:14

Nothing on earth would make me stand for over an hour, wearing a wool coat, in rain like Saturday's.

Thymeout · 12/11/2018 14:17

He's a London MP. He could use his Freedom Pass to get to work. (Tho' doesn't.) He obviously has lower expenses than someone with a second home in a constituency hundreds of miles away. There was a time when people were saying that he had the lowest expense claims in Westminster, but that turned out to be because he'd forgotten to submit the form.

I am actually a Labour voter who's stood twice for council seats. Until Corbyn & Co took over, no one would have called me a right-winger. But I'm really fed up with what's happened to my party, especially over Brexit. And the canonisation of Corbyn as a man of principle who can do no wrong. His son, Seb, has been employed as McDonnell's chief of staff at an enviable salary. Nepotism? Surely not. He does a 3 day week at Westminster. Has as much 'executive time' as Trump, so he can mix with 'ordinary people' - like Cuban trade unionists and Palestinian activists.

The bottom line is that it was an Establishment event and Corbyn's USP is being anti-Establishment. It was grandstanding, pure and simple. Yawn.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 12/11/2018 14:24

Like another poster I look scruffy no matter how smartly I dress so maybe he's the same?

So do I, but we not leaders of the Opposition attending a very sombre and formal occasion, as far I as I know.

He had formal wear, he’s worn it on other occasions, far less formal than this.

When there is a dress code on a state ceremony you stick to it. Anything else is attention seeking and people are bound to ask just why you are doing it.

When it rains,you get wet.
Remember Putin and his flunkey with the umbrella on the World Cup Final when everybody else stood there getting soaked? He became a laughingstock, and rightly so.

Doubletrouble99 · 12/11/2018 14:31

I didn't see any rain at the cenotaph. I'm reminded of Harry and Megan on their latest tour. They didn't change their attire to something unsuitable for the occasion just because it was raining, and a lot of the time it was pouring.

Doubletrouble99 · 12/11/2018 14:35

Limensoda - the frightening thing about him is he would never make any difficult decisions. He would fart around for so long that we would be a sitting target for anyone and everyone who wanted to bomb/invade us.

Aquilla · 12/11/2018 14:39

Inappropriate. Bet he'd wear black for the IRA though.

GiantKitten · 12/11/2018 14:39

@derxa

Yeah, I'd be one of those people. I'd think, well, I'll be outside, the forecast's dodgy, I'll wear my anorak. Did you see all those fantastically smart ambassadors there. All wearing smart black outfits. If it rains you stand there and get wet

But they all went inside afterwards. He always stays outside to talk to the veterans (of course the tabloids don't cover that). He went on to another Remembrance event in Islington (of course the tabloids don't cover that either). The "anorak" was entirely appropriate for those. Should he carry 2 coats?

@Thymeout

He's a London MP. He could use his Freedom Pass to get to work. (Tho' doesn't.)

He used to use public transport regularly when he first became leader. Perhaps security became an issue?

& Seb Corbyn has worked for McDonnell since he was a backbencher. Should he have been fired once McDonnell became shadow Chancellor?

GiantKitten · 12/11/2018 14:42

@Doubletrouble99

I didn't see any rain at the cenotaph

A PP has already mentioned that it was raining where he lives earlier in the morning.

ErickBroch · 12/11/2018 14:46

Get a grip, I am sure all of those men that lost their lives are very concerned over the outerwear of a politician.

CoughLaughFart · 12/11/2018 14:50

A PP has already mentioned that it was raining where he lives earlier in the morning.

Also, comments such as ‘It wasn’t raining in London’ are ridiculous. London isn’t a one-street hamlet - it’s a city of 8 million people. It wasn’t raining in my area, but I wouldn’t be daft enough to say that means it wasn’t elsewhere in the (huge) city.

derxa · 12/11/2018 14:51

Why shouldn't he be smartly dressed to talk to veterans or go to another service? He went into the building behind Theresa May so didn't 'stay behind'.

Thymeout · 12/11/2018 14:52

The 'talking to the veterans instead of going to a posh lunch' was covered in the press 3 years ago. In fact, it was talking to the veterans on his way to another ceremony in his constituency, not choosing the veterans over posh refreshments. And he was wearing his overcoat on that occasion.

I assume Corbyn Junior was getting paid while working for McDonnell, backbencher. The difference now is that his salary is subsidised by Short money, instead of MP's office expenses. It's still nepotism.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 12/11/2018 15:15

I have a metal one I wear every year, I always chuck some money in the collecting boxes but never wear a paper one.

Same here - cack-handed as I am, I can never persuade a paper one to stay inlace on my coat.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 12/11/2018 15:18

Easy to tell if he donated check his expenses

It wouldn't show up cd - he's not a Tory.

Hubbleisback · 12/11/2018 15:23

Are those who are so concerned about this even slightly worried about what people might wear to their own funerals? Don't be,-you won't know any more than the poor dead soldiers.

GiantKitten · 12/11/2018 15:28

Why shouldn't he be smartly dressed to talk to veterans or go to another service? He went into the building behind Theresa May so didn't 'stay behind'

Well obviously he's not going to just leg it off down Whitehall instead of initially going inside at that point

And as for being smartly dressed a) who's to say it wouldn't rain again & b) why shouldn't he wear what he's comfortable in?

Honestly all the arguments against the "anorak" couldn't be more petty. Even Julia H-B acknowledged that it was petty to pick on it.

BoooForYou · 12/11/2018 15:31

With all the injustices in the world, say, I don't know, the double standards of May honouring the dead when more servicemen than ever are homeless due to her regime, you concentrate on a poxy coat?
If he had of turned up wearing a black coat, no doubt there'd be complaints that he was wasting money on frivolous things.
Man can't win.

Rachelover40 · 12/11/2018 15:34

Good for you BoooForYou, well said.

I can't believe this thread is still going!

Jeremy Corbyn's coat was nice, no problem at all & he was wearing a decent suit under it.

There are far more important issues in the world. I doubt he gave it a thought.

BertrandRussell · 12/11/2018 15:38

Yes, he could use his Freedom Pass to get to work. He did when he was a back bencher. But doing it now would bump up the security bill considerably, and mean he would be wasting time he should be using to be an effective leader of the opposition (hah!) for the sake of a gesture.
