To still be cross at Jeremy Corbin's anorak

It's 11 hours after the event, but at the cenotaph amongst all of the black coats stood Jeremy Corbin in a blue anorak with hood flapping, is this really the best he could do?

BertrandRussel he was wearing a poppy pin badge, sold by the British Legion. You can see it,it's there on his coat. Jesus, it's utterly ridiculous that he is being criticised for this. "Well yes he is wearing a poppy, but it's not the right kind of poppy, so clearly he has no respect for the fallen" FFS!

BertrandRussell · 12/11/2018 09:20

He isn’t worth 3 million. He has been paid a total of 3 million over his time as an MP. Like any other MP of any other party. Or any other reasonably well paid person.

But obviously he could afford to buy a coat if he wanted to.

derxa · 12/11/2018 09:20

He reminds of children in my school play productions. They don't have a starring role so they deliberately shift about on stage and make it all about them. Low level disruption but quite deliberate. Tony Blair and Cameron always send me into a rage on this occasion but there was old Jeremy with his fucking anorak taking centre stage

belfastbosoms · 12/11/2018 09:22

Tymeout love the stereotypes there. Re the middle class, what constitutes a "proper job" exactly, or do you think everyone involved in the Stop the War movement is a trustfarian? And as for the working classes, your comment sounds like people saying they have -a "Sunday best", stereotyping much?

crochetmonkey74 · 12/11/2018 09:22

I feel really strongly about this , this year- we seem to be in a politics of cruelty and yet remembrance day seems to have become this mawkish and over sentimentalist event, and a stick to beat people with if they dont wear a poppy/ the right poppy etc etc

wowfudge · 12/11/2018 09:23

He's got a smart winter coat. We've seen it before. He chose not to wear it so it was quite likely that wearing his anorak was some kind of statement on his part. Imo no one among the politicians at the ceremony at the cenotaph should have done/worn anything that drew attention to them and so detracted from the event. Jeremy Corbyn did exactly that.

lljkk · 12/11/2018 09:24

My nasty navy anorak lacks any collar... heck, it doesn't even have a hood! I guess any raincoat = nasty anorak in the eyes of the haters?

BertrandRussell · 12/11/2018 09:24

Yep. A proper British Legion poppy. As sold by the British Legion. To make money for the British Legion. But obviously too small for some. Hmm

I do hope poppies are recyleable.........

Rachelover40 · 12/11/2018 09:25

Do any of you seriously believe that Jeremy Corbyn is the type of person to consider something like this, such as showing 'solidarity with the working class' and all that? He just dressed himself, probably had a decent suit and tie underneath his jacket.

It's not at all important and he looked extremely nice, quite smart. At least he went!

Tinkobell · 12/11/2018 09:26

Hey he CAN dress smart....this was him at Glastonbury see.

To still be cross at Jeremy Corbin's anorak
longwayoff · 12/11/2018 09:26

Yes it's terrible. All I could think of yesterday was Jeremy Corbyn's coat. I was so consumed with fury about it that I failed to notice the absence of both Trump and Putin from the memorial silence in France. Fortunately when they both rolled up late, they were appropriately attired, so the insult to the thousands of Americans and Russians who died to give those two nicely dressed thugs the opportunity to return the world to the 1930s has passed almost without comment. Two words for you OP. I think you know what they are.

Ifailed · 12/11/2018 09:27

This is from the BBC web site. Can't for the life of me see what people are moaning about?

To still be cross at Jeremy Corbin's anorak
StarbucksSmarterSister · 12/11/2018 09:27

Some people look good in a suit, some don’t. Some exude sartorial elegance, some don’t

Foot's "donkey jacket" turned out to be an expensive, albeit short, overcoat (Crombie I think) bought by his wife in an attempt to make him look smart . Trouble was, everything he wore looked scruffy and this was no exception.

My only issue with Corbyn is that he should know the Tory press will use any excuse to rip him to shreds and so should have stuck with a traditional "respectful" overcoat. That said I totally agree that a pacifist wearing a rainjacket is far preferable to May, Blair etc, with their loathsome track records, wearing the right clothing.

Kewqueue · 12/11/2018 09:28

He looked absolutely fine.

Hisaishi · 12/11/2018 09:29

How do those claiming attention seeking know that's what he was doing?

Maybe he just threw on whatever dark jacket he had because he doesn't give a shit about fashion. Maybe he was attention seeking. Maybe he deliberately chose to disrespect the veterans.

Unless you have psychic powers, or are Jeremy Corbyn, how could you possibly know?

Absolutely baffling what some people care about. It's not like he turned up in a Nike tracksuit and a badge that said 'fuck the troops'.

belfastbosoms · 12/11/2018 09:29

BertrandRussel I apologise I misread your post and thought you were complaining about the size of his poppy!
The commemorative set, with 5 pin badges, had even smaller ones. God forbid he'd paid the £5 for that and worn one of those. My pearls would have been clutched!!!

SillySallySingsSongs · 12/11/2018 09:30

It's important because IT WAS A PA PROTEST.
He KNEW what he was doing.

Exactly. He knew what he was doing. Just like he did by not attending the service of memorial on Saturday and sending Emily Thornbury instead.

Rachelover40 · 12/11/2018 09:31

It's certainly given people something to complain about and appears to be such a sartorial sin as to give rise to plenty of foul language.

I've just had another look at Mr Corbyn in his raincoat and he looks absolutely fine to me, it wasn't dayglo orange and he's wearing a dark suit underneath.

Hisaishi · 12/11/2018 09:31

Meanwhile, thousands are dying in Yemen and Syria. What are those who are so concerned with a jacket doing to prevent that? Since they seem to have big enough gobs to harp on about a jacket, maybe they have some fancy solutions for that too.

There are way way way bigger fish to fry. All this is just a distraction.

Plus surely if he's attention seeking, well, he got your attention, didn't he? Maybe you should ignore him, then he'll stop doing it, like a toddler.

Thymeout · 12/11/2018 09:31

'At least he went'

That's his bloody job!

He's not been averse to wreath-laying in the past. I'm sure people haven't forgotten the Tunisian revelations during the summer.

Hisaishi · 12/11/2018 09:31

silly how do you know he 'knew what he was doing'.

Seriously

Explain to me how you know.

IJustLostTheGame · 12/11/2018 09:32

I'm more pissed off that war mongering Tony Blair was there.
The anorak was sensible, it looked as though it was going to rain.

TheFairyCaravan · 12/11/2018 09:33

And the thousands of squaddies in the army certainly don’t come from families who all have expensive black wool smart coats

I beg your pardon! What sort of an uneducated comment is that?

DS1 is a soldier. I've got a smart, black wool coat as has DH. DS1 has an expensive wool suit, he has a very expensive coat, he has a wool jacket. He spends an absolute fucking fortune on his clothes and knows that certain occasions have a dress code. I've not asked him about Corbyn's coat because he was on parade yesterday, however DH (RAF) and I thought he looked an absolute scruff.

belfastbosoms · 12/11/2018 09:34

I live in London, and the weather forecast for yesterday was for rain. The night before it had been absolutely chucking it down.
Look at the photo from the BBC posted below. He looks as smart and respectful as everyone else.

Polarbearflavour · 12/11/2018 09:35

Really? That’s what you took from yesterday? Confused

DP is military. He has a uniform “foul weather jacket” (foulie) that is basically an anorak. They stopped providing the smart military greatcoats as standard uniform
years ago. Good enough for military officers, good enough for Jeremy Corbyn!
