Pangea, Chromosomes...

SleepingStandingUp · 10/11/2018 20:11

What common knowledge do you assume most adults would know but apparently not...

What Pangea is. Based on the Apprentice episode, not as widely known as I assumed.

How many chromosomes a standard human has. DH had to Google it when explaining our sons condition to a friend. I am utterly flabagasted.

Pangea yes. Chromosomes probably.

But do you know what Burke and Hare got up to?

Letsgetreadytorumba · 10/11/2018 20:34

I couldn’t tell you either but know what Burke and hare did.

Coffeeisnecessary · 10/11/2018 20:35

I was surprised at the lack of pangea knowledge too, when he said it I said to my dh, 'ah that is a good name for an airline' he looked at me blankly. Having said that I'm not entirely sure on the chromosomes!

PurpleDaisies · 10/11/2018 20:36

I’ve never heard of Burke and hare.

I wouldn’t assume most adults knew how many chromosomes we have or what Pangea was.

ThereGoesTheAlarm · 10/11/2018 20:37

I was astonished by how many people I’ve spoken to since the apprentice episode don’t know what Pangea means. Even my husband who is much more intelligent than I am.

Grrrrrrt · 10/11/2018 20:38

Both came up more than once in school and I'd know both and would assume most adults would.

Didn't know who Burke and Hare were though.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 10/11/2018 20:39

Please say what Burke and Hare did.

Beanfield · 10/11/2018 20:41

I’m a genius and know Pangea, chromosomes and Burke and hare.

However I do have trouble adding up and left and right.

BreconBeBuggered · 10/11/2018 20:42

It was always Pangaea when my DC were small. When did that change?
I'm usually better at spelling than definitions. I only have a vague notion about chromosomes. Burke and Hare I can manage.

Maelstrop · 10/11/2018 20:42

Pangea rang a bell but I had to check. Burke and Hare are very notorious, I know all about them.

huggybear · 10/11/2018 20:43

Pangea yes.

Chromosomes, I wasn't sure.

B&H... Erm... Have heard of but no idea

MamaLovesMango · 10/11/2018 20:45

@beanfield

ME TOO!!!

Are you my person?

Sickoffamilydrama · 10/11/2018 20:45

Hahaha I've completely forgotten how many chromosomes we have & I've got a BSc!

Maybe it's the stress of studying for an MBA and several large essays due soon Confused

Nacreous · 10/11/2018 20:47

I don't really think the number of chromosomes we have is terribly relevant to our daily lives. I did a degree in biology, and my expectation of non-biologists would generally be that they knew we had genes, and that chromosomes contain genes. The actual number gives very limited additional ability to understand e.g. news articles.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 10/11/2018 20:48

I know Pangaea, chromosomes and Burke & Hare. Still can’t tell an accelerator from a brake though, which is why I don’t drive.

PrincessConsuelaBannanaHammock · 10/11/2018 20:49

Yes to Pangaea & Burke and Hare but I couldn't tell you how many chromosomes an adult has without a quick Google Blush

ShannonRockallMalin · 10/11/2018 20:50

I’m good with Pangea, and with Burke and Hare, had to double check chromosomes though.

Something I am fairly frequently surprised by is that people think Catholics are not Christians. Don’t know what they think they are though!

Mouthfulofquiz · 10/11/2018 20:52

Isn’t Pangea one of the continents in the time of the dinosaurs or have I got the wrong end of the stick?!

Sickoffamilydrama · 10/11/2018 20:52

@VeniVidiWeeWee
Burke and Hare where originally grave robbers who sold bodies for anatomical study, they then realised that it was easier to murder people and sell those bodies rather than go around digging them up. They eventually got caught but I think one of them disappeared/survived.

SuperstarDJ · 10/11/2018 20:52

I couldn’t answer any of those and I’d consider myself to have slightly above average intelligence Blush

PurpleDaisies · 10/11/2018 20:54

I couldn’t answer any of those and I’d consider myself to have slightly above average intelligence

It’s nothing to do with intelligence. Confused

You just haven’t heard of them.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 10/11/2018 21:01

Come on! Everyone is saying they know what B &H did.

Tell me what they did.

Frlrlrubert · 10/11/2018 21:01

Pangea and chromosomes I can do. Burke and Hare rang a bell but I'd have had to google.

I'm surprised when adults don't know that the sun is a star and the stars are really far away suns.

PurpleDaisies · 10/11/2018 21:02

Google not working for you veni?

SevernWye · 10/11/2018 21:05

We have 23 pairs of chromosomes, therefore 46.

We have two of each, that’s why Downs Syndome is call trisomy 21 as there are three of chromosome 21 instead of two.
