Pangea, Chromosomes...

SleepingStandingUp · 10/11/2018 20:11

What common knowledge do you assume most adults would know but apparently not...

What Pangea is. Based on the Apprentice episode, not as widely known as I assumed.

How many chromosomes a standard human has. DH had to Google it when explaining our sons condition to a friend. I am utterly flabagasted.

I know about Burke and Hare, grim stuff that, up in Scotland.

VerividiWeeWee, Burke and Hare sold dead bodies for research; they started off knicking them from mortuaries and undertakers and then killed a few people so they could carry on providing them.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 10/11/2018 21:08

🤣purple

I know what B&H did.

Most people don't.

No one has said what they think they did.

Anasnake · 10/11/2018 21:10

Burke and Hare were grave robbers and murderers, sold bodies for dissection. There's a good ghost walk in Edinburgh about them.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 10/11/2018 21:11

Lots of children know what Burke Andy Hare did, Horrible Histories did a song about them.

Beanfield · 10/11/2018 21:11

@MamaLovesMango
Possibly. Hello 👋

Racecardriver · 10/11/2018 21:12

Did Burke and hare... cough cough...you know?

BestestBrownies · 10/11/2018 21:14

Have never heard of Burke & Hare, but I do know how to spell flabbergasted.....

NeurotrashWarrior · 10/11/2018 21:14
BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 10/11/2018 21:14

Pangea..yes (never ever seen Apprentice though). Burke & Hare.. yes. Chromosomes ... yes (because there is a history of chromosomal disorders in my family).

I do have a lot of KNOWLEDGE because I read a lot, quiz a lot, but I don’t have a lot of LEARNING and know practically sod all about sport....

NeurotrashWarrior · 10/11/2018 21:16

Oh I did know that. I think I've had to learn too many octonaut names which has pushed out some finer historical facts.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 10/11/2018 21:17

A surprising number of people don’t know the difference between Great Britain and the United Kingdom.

WhyAmISoCold · 10/11/2018 21:17

Pangea yes, chromosomes yes, Burke and Hare nope.

chipsandpeas · 10/11/2018 21:19

i didnt know pangea until the apprentice, i know chromosones and about burke and hare (as well as its a strippers bar in edinburgh)

VeniVidiWeeWee · 10/11/2018 21:20

anasnake

There is no evidence that they were grave robbers.

NotTheFordType · 10/11/2018 21:20

If you haven't heard of Burke and Hare (or if you have!) treat yourselves to this film
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burke_%26_Hare_(2010_film)

I was also astounded that this week's candidates had never heard the term Pangea and more shockingly, neither had Lord Sugar. Claude clearly had!

Although Pangea would still have been a shit name for an airline targeting "party people"...

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 10/11/2018 21:20

Burke and Hare and chromosomes I know. No idea about Pangea.

longwayoff · 10/11/2018 21:20

Intelligence and general knowledge are not the same thing. You can have an IQ of 160+ and still not be able to answer these questions. If you've never heard of x, you can't answer questions about x.

ButchyRestingFace · 10/11/2018 21:20

I know Burke and Hare and chromosomes but have never heard of Pangea. (I have now!).

For me, I'm always surprised by the number of people who don't realise that there is no "universal" sign language and that each country has it's own SL.

BareBelliedSneetch · 10/11/2018 21:25

Pangea ✅
Burke and hare ✅
Chromosomes ✅

Grin

I’m always surprised when people don’t know the order of the planets. To me that’s like knowing the alphabet or counting. I can’t remember not knowing.

SpamChaudFroid · 10/11/2018 21:26

Knew Pangea. Not the chromosomes though. Or Burke and Hare. I know answers to all 3 now after reading this thread. Grin

theWarOnPeace · 10/11/2018 21:27

Chromosomes are fascinating things, 23 pairs per cell, and do they sort of ‘manage’ DNA? Am I right in thinking that the only cells without a full pair are reproductive cells, they have one each and then they become one, thus taking half and half from each parent before multiplying?

B&H yes, although can’t remember the ins and outs of how they got caught etc. Without googling, did one of them leave the other to hang for it, while they ran off?

Pangea yes, although I had thought for a good few years that Pangea was still close/almost intact when humans evolved. It wasn’t. Pangea something like 150 million +++ humans more like 200,000 years ago. I’m now more into anthropology and am keen on the Out of Africa theory.

OpiningGambit · 10/11/2018 21:28

People think 'learning styles' are real. Even other teachers Angry

SmilingButClueless · 10/11/2018 21:30

The number of people on quiz shows who don’t know really basic geography (e.g. what places are cities / countries / continents) always surprises me

MrsSarahSiddons · 10/11/2018 21:31

I’m surprised that you don’t know how to spell the basic word “flabbergasted”, OP.

MattBerrysHair · 10/11/2018 21:35

I know about Pangaea, number of chromosomes and B&H. However, I didn't know what a 'white elephant' was and embarrassed myself at work the other day. I also don't know all my times tables without carefully counting on my fingers.
