After the Iceland ad I've decided I need to stop putting off searching for products that don't contain palm oil and actually do it. Obviously I know Iceland's own range will be palm oil free but what about other brands and products?

I bought a peanut butter last week called Pip N Nut which is palm oil free and tasty but that's as far as I've managed shopping wise so far.

If you have found products, groceries and toiletries which are palm oil free please share them here. Maybe if people had a quick list of products that they know don't contain palm oil more busy shoppers will make those choices.

I've heard there is also the option of sustainable palm oil sources so I'd be interested in knowing more about this too.

Great thread idea. Does anyone know of a Nutella alternative?
I bought Tesco own brand milk chocolate last week; it was palm oil free and had more cocoa solids than dairy milk.

holidaylady · 10/11/2018 09:05

Peanut butter brand the whole earth is palm oil free I think

Doghorsechicken · 10/11/2018 09:09

I’d like to follow this thread.

VisitorsEntrance · 10/11/2018 09:09

Gü have just launched palm oil free chocolate spread. It’s not cheap but when you realise how much of Nutella is palm oil you might feel it’s worth it.

Shampoo is the hard one. Jason is palm oil free.

Filmbuffmum · 10/11/2018 09:15

The dark chocolate one from Biona is palm oil free and delicious (not the same as nutella, but really good)

Whole Earth lists ‘sustainable palm oil’ as one of the ingredients for their crunchy peanut butter. Does anyone know if this is actually a reasonable approach for them to take or would it be better to go palm oil free completely? Love WE PB so would be gutted to need to switch.

DropZoneOne · 10/11/2018 09:16

Is palm oil always listed as palm oil? Or does it have some fancy name when used in cleaning products / toiletries?

I'm after a nutella alternative too.

oflow · 10/11/2018 09:16

Bloomtown Botanicals, I love them. Toiletries and candles.

gamerwidow · 10/11/2018 09:18

Bloody hell this is an eye opener. I just did a google search thinking it can’t be that hard to find a list of palm oil free products but everything has palm oil in it!!
Even something like bread which has no right to contain palm oil has only about 3 brands easily bought in supermarkets without palm oil in it. How do you even start? Will watch the thread though for ideas.

PurpleDaisies · 10/11/2018 09:18

Is palm oil always listed as palm oil?

Yes, there was a ruling in 2014 that is must explicitly appear on an ingredients list. I read that on Newsround!

PrincessConsuelaBannanaHammock · 10/11/2018 09:19

I was looking last night too, I'm shocked at the amount of things it's in.
DropZoneOne from What I read it has many many names, try a quick Google of it but from what I found there was lots!

PrincessConsuelaBannanaHammock · 10/11/2018 09:21

Thanks PurpleDaisies what I read then was maybe out of date Blush

Paddybare · 10/11/2018 09:21

I would also like to know more about ‘sustainable’ palm oil. Also what does a palm oil-free product use in its place. Need to get researching.

Annabel7 · 10/11/2018 09:22

Whole earth peanut butter has 'sustainable palm oil' - not sure if that's really a thing. Interestingly, the cheaper brands like Sun Pat use peanut oil.. I've been reading labels more closely since watching a heartbreaking documentary about the deforestation in Borneo and it's in sooo many products...

PearlandRubies194 · 10/11/2018 09:22

Thank you for this thread OP, I’ll be watching it closely for ideas as I’ve no clue where to start but I’m just not doing enough to stop this... I watched the Iceland ad last night with a lump in my throat 😢

Devillanelle · 10/11/2018 09:23

I read here yesterday that sustainable palm oil is better for the environment than other kinds of oils. Haven't researched it at all yet but would be interested to know the facts about palm oil.

OhHolyJesus · 10/11/2018 09:26

I'll try to find the list of products to avoid online later and post back - do beware of the other names palm oil goes by, it's often hidden even though it has to be listed I think manufacturers finds ways to hide it. Maybe that's just be being paranoid!

MoaningSickness · 10/11/2018 09:27

Does anyone know of a Nutella alternative?

Just seconding that I like the gu one.

Whole earth peanut butter has 'sustainable palm oil'

I have one that's Palm oil free. Depends which type you get.

MontanaSkies · 10/11/2018 09:27

I just found a soap in the cupboard with the first two ingredients "Sodium Palmate, Sodium Palm kernelate". Which I assume are derived from palm oil. So in cosmetic products I think it's harder to spot at first glance.

CherryPavlova · 10/11/2018 09:27

I’m increasingly concerned about how shabbily we treat the world and have made an effort with plastic but until I saw the Iceland advert, I’ve not really thought about palm oil as a personal issue.
I’d like to switch to palm oil free toiletries and cleaning products - assume Ecover is OK? Which shampoo and conditioner can I use? Is there an accurate list?

MontanaSkies · 10/11/2018 09:34

I'm finding toiletries a real struggle too. Just checked my beloved Clinique "Take The Day Off" cleansing balm and it's chock full of palm oil too, listed as "Ethylhexyl palmitate". Any alternative suggestions gratefully received!

muddledmidget · 10/11/2018 09:35

Morrisons do an own brand peanut butter that is just peanuts, and only £1.90 a jar, available in smooth and crunchy

Annabel7 · 10/11/2018 09:37

Some inspiration to spur us on...

To ask people to help me find palm oil free products.
Davros · 10/11/2018 09:40

Morrison's have a few good initiatives - their Wonky range and milk that gives more money to farmers. M&S uses Sustainable Palm Oil in some products. My understanding is that they mitigate and damage in some way. Definitely need more info
