How much do you drink?

Don't know how many of you watched the Adrian Chiles documentary about drinking recently but, for those of you, who didn't, I think he said he often drinks more than 100 units of alcohol per week.

For context, here is what a unit of alcohol means - www.drinkaware.co.uk/alcohol-facts/alcoholic-drinks-units/what-is-an-alcohol-unit/

My son told me one of his classmates said that his mum and dad share a bottle of wine each every night. My hairdresser told me she drinks 2 bottles of wine a week.

I drink a glass of wine a week but was surprised to discover recently that this is still more than 50% of women in this country!

Should I really be concerned about one small glass of wine per once a week????? Shock

Two small —175 ml— glasses of wine a night Friday to Sunday.

Very occasional glass midweek but not usually

Fifthtimelucky · 10/11/2018 18:26

I don't drink any alcohol, but do sometimes cook with it and tend to put rather too much brandy in my brandy butter!

OuchLegoHurts · 10/11/2018 18:29

tiggerkid you're being silly now.
You don't 'compare'. Why would you?
No doctor in the world is going to tell you that one glass of wine is bad for you. In fact, some will tell you that it's good for you.

I only drink socially, so if I go on a night out I’ll have anything from a couple of glasses of wine to, erm, loads Grin depending on the occasion. I don’t enjoy getting properly drunk and know my ‘buzzed’ limits. I like the ritual of going out for a drink, I like the taste and the social aspect. I very rarely drink at home, maybe a glass or two of wine a fortnight.

Gimmeesugar · 10/11/2018 22:18

@tiggerkid what have you ever read anywhere ever that suggests you should be worried about drinking one glass of wine (Max 3 units) a week? This feels like a weird boast post

Mammyloveswine · 10/11/2018 22:46

I've made a conscious effort to cut down... but I do drink about 2 bottles of wine a week which is 18 units! I was drinking a lot more.. it became a habit when the kids were in bed! I will now often have a g&t instead of wine too..

Sidalee7 · 10/11/2018 23:35

I have been drinking every night recently as am v stressed. Hopefully will be resolved asap - I need to dry out!

Usually in non stressful times its a glass of wine or two 3-4 times a week.

Juanbablo · 11/11/2018 05:38

Last night I had one glass of prosecco. The Friday before I had 2 glasses of wine. Before that it was a few months since having any alcohol.

TheWickedWitchofWestYorkshire · 11/11/2018 06:00

Hardly ever drink. I can't remember the last time I had alcohol. I don't like the taste of most of it tbh.

MaryShelley1818 · 11/11/2018 06:09

I drink very rarely! Not even once a month. I don’t drink in the house but will have a few drinks on a night out.

SoleBizzz · 11/11/2018 06:13

0 don't like the taste of alcohol

JanetLovesJason · 11/11/2018 06:15

Don’t drink anything for ages (literally months sometimes) then we might split a nice bottle of red one night if I get a fancy for it. Often there will be enough left for a glass the next day or to slash into a bolognese.

Maybe once a year I’ll exceed the weekly allowance due to being on holiday/having a couple of social events to go to around Xmas/finishing the first bottle and getting onto the second a couple of nights in a row

Leobynature · 11/11/2018 06:35

I absolutely 100% know I have an addiction to alcohol. I try to limit myself to wine glass per night. I will have a couple of glasses Saturday and Sunday. I try not very little alcohol in the house.

I really need to cut back on this

hazell42 · 11/11/2018 06:42

I have maybe 20 units a year. Rarely drink except one or two at Christmas and when on holiday.

BlueCurious · 11/11/2018 07:14

I honestly don't understand how so many people drink so much! I never drink at home and only drink once or twice a year, if I'm lucky enough to have a night out!

Sitwhereyoulike · 11/11/2018 08:01

Most evenings either a couple of glasses of wine or a couple of gins.

Yes I know it's too much but since
My marriage had gone a bit wrong it's
My
Coping mechanism.

Caprisunorange · 11/11/2018 08:16

Other people’s alcohol habits and attitudes are quite fascinating aren’t they? Like people who say “I don’t understand why people drink xyz” - such a weird level of entitlement to assume it has to be understandable somehow? In the real world people live differently by all sorts of measures and we generally accept this, why the bizarre need to feel you understand people’s private lives when it comes to alcohol

Also when people say things like (sorry to PP) “I have 4 drinks a year- 2 specific cocktails and 2 wines” or “I have a small baileys with Xmas dinner” it just sounds incredibly, obsessively regimented and weird. The level of detail for the rareity is strangely unsettling.

Anyway I’m aware i haven’t answered myself: I’m pregnant but usually drink around 2 bottles wine a week, usually on 2 occasions ie Saturday lunch/ evening out. I don’t drink frequently in the week but I love going to bars/ pubs and it forms a huge part of my social life

Taffeta · 11/11/2018 08:24

I agree re the weird obsessive regimented thing

I went to a night out recently and a friend brought a bottle of spirits with her

Each drink she had she used a measure “so I know exactly how much I’m having”

Ridiculous! She was shitfaced as she drank loads. Why do you need a measure?!!!

Eifla · 11/11/2018 09:01

Nothing. I don’t drink, don’t really like any of it.
