How much do you drink?

Don't know how many of you watched the Adrian Chiles documentary about drinking recently but, for those of you, who didn't, I think he said he often drinks more than 100 units of alcohol per week.

For context, here is what a unit of alcohol means - www.drinkaware.co.uk/alcohol-facts/alcoholic-drinks-units/what-is-an-alcohol-unit/

My son told me one of his classmates said that his mum and dad share a bottle of wine each every night. My hairdresser told me she drinks 2 bottles of wine a week.

I drink a glass of wine a week but was surprised to discover recently that this is still more than 50% of women in this country!

Should I really be concerned about one small glass of wine per once a week????? Shock

I do wonder what the point of these threads are, some of us drink loads some don't some are worried drinkers, some are smug non or barely there drinkers what does sharing this achieve? feeling good because you realise you are not alone as a drinker? smug cos you drink less than the 'problem drinkers' ? all a bit pointless really. we do what we do for whatever reason / situation we are in.

Taffeta · 09/11/2018 21:35

Varies hugely

Some weeks I’ll have nothing
Some weeks I’ll have one glass of wine all week
Other weeks I’ll have a glass of wine a few nights that week
Other weeks - usually when socialising - I’ll get through a bottle in a night

Latter not that often tho

Basically I drink when the situation is right and I feel like it

goingonabearhunt1 · 09/11/2018 22:03

I try not to drink Mon-Thurs but then I'd prob either have half a bottle of wine or a couple of beers Friday and Saturday night and maybe like a pint on a Sunday if we go for a walk or something. Sometimes also have a vodka and mixer one of those wknd nights. Some wknds it ends up being loads more though. I've always drunk regularly and have been trying to get it down over time. I do really enjoy it though and rarely get properly drunk. I just really really like most alcoholic drinks (beer, wine, cider, vodka, whisky etc.) Blush

DishranawaywiththeSpoon · 09/11/2018 22:17

I probably drink a bottle of wine plus a couple of beers/ G&Ts a week on average. Sometimes more if I go out, sometimes none at all.

I think everyone varies though. Theres nothing wrong with a glass of wine a week if you enjoy it.

Personally I am happy with what I drink, I enjoy it and I don't think the amount I drink will be majorly detrimental to my health, I eat well and i exercise plenty and whilst it might have an affect on my health personally I'm willing to take that risk. For others that might be too much. It depends what you enjoy and your priorities.

tor8181 · 09/11/2018 22:21

Knittink · 09/11/2018 22:22

I used to drink quite a lot in my 20s and early 30s (never more than 2 or 3 times a week though). I'm now mid 40s and have sort of gone off it a bit. I have a pint of beer or a couple of glasses of wine once a week and don't fancy any more.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/11/2018 07:11

I drink about half a bottle of red wine, twice a week, sometimes 3 times. Unless it’s a night out/birthday. We watched that AC documentary and found it really interesting. I don’t drink more than 14/15 units most weeks but I actually feel like it’s too much for me. I want to cut down/out alcohol, and I plan to in the New year because I’m running a half marathon in April and I want to shake the hungover feeling. For me is as much the alcohol as the overeating and rubbish food which I seem to find myself eating once i’ve had a glass of wine.

Iminagony · 10/11/2018 11:25

Average of nothing. I drink a few drinks a year. Probably only 3-4.

I don't really like wine, beer, cider, etc. I like a few cocktails but rarely drink them.

Other people I know drink a glass of wine almost every night, or at least a few a week.

tiggerkid · 10/11/2018 12:14

Thank you for sharing, ladies, but I am all confused now: how do I compare a small glass of wine weekly with, say, drinking 1-2 bottles of wine over the weekend and then not drinking for several weeks (and all other similar patterns mentioned on this thread)?

MrsStrowman · 10/11/2018 12:18

At the moment nothing at all(pregnant), usually most weeks nothing, DH probably share a bottle of wine with dinner at home about once a month and will have a couple of drinks if we go out for a special occasion, on holiday I'll probably have a few drinks most days.

MrsStrowman · 10/11/2018 12:20

NHS says a binge is anything more than 6 units in one sitting a bottle of wine (750ml) is about ten units, so one unit per 75ml.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/11/2018 12:51

We use the drinkless app, it’s very good. It will tell you if you’ve exceeded your weekly units, but also if your daily amount constitutes a ‘binge’ or not. It’s very easy actually to binge drink (technically) and not really be drunk, or even exceed your weekly amount.

Canuckduck · 10/11/2018 13:09

No drinking from Sunday to Thursday. A few drinks (one cider or large glass of wine) on Friday and then we either go out Saturday or have guests and have a few drinks or share a bottle of wine and some nice food at home.

Bluesheep8 · 10/11/2018 13:27

I drink a bottle of wine on a Friday, one on Saturday and one on Sunday. So 3 bottles per week. I don't drink Monday to Thursday but am aware that it's far too much and completely habitual. I start looking forward to my first glass of wine at 6pm at lunchtime on a Friday BlushWine

ChodeofChodeHall · 10/11/2018 13:29

8 yrs sober! 💪

Bluesheep8 · 10/11/2018 13:30

Plus, myself and my colleagues seem to start talking about what we're looking forward to eating/drinking at the weekend on a Friday afternoon. Not that I'm blaming that!

notsurewhatshappening · 10/11/2018 13:33

I don't drink at home ever, because my DH has a full blown drink problem and is in recovery
I'm going out with a friend tonight and might have a glass of wine but I'm not too fussed. Being sober is great and so underrated.

Whatdoesitmatteranyway · 10/11/2018 13:35

Used to drink two large beers and a bottle of gin a day. Didn’t have a drink problem - had an abusive husband problem and being drunk was preferable to dealing with it.

Once I ditched the husband I ditched the drink.

Now I drink a bottle of wine on my Thursday/Friday four hour commute home (by train)

On a Saturday I’ll have a double g an t in the bath and then a bottle of Prosecco 25ml pink gin in each glass to make a cocktail (three per bottle)

So a lot by MN standards but I’m comfortable with it.

HashtagTeamRaven · 10/11/2018 13:41

DP and I are tee total.
I've never "got" it, I don't particularly like the taste and have never found it calming, or relaxing or whatever else people seems to drink for.
I feel I'm probably missing out on something.

DP was never much of a drinker anyway but then got cancer. He's in remission and tries his best to be as healthy as possible to help his chances, not drinking is part of that.

ScarlettDarling · 10/11/2018 13:47

Interesting replies on this thread. I drink less than almost anyone I know. I'll have a gin on a Friday night and Saturday night. I measure it and rarely have more than a single measure. So many people on this thread drink even less than that though.

Op, don't know why you need to compare your weekly glass of wine with people who drink a bottle or two every few weeks? Your weekly glass is in no way anything to worry about. It's a tiny amount of alcohol, well within safe limits.

Desecratedcoconut · 10/11/2018 13:49

I have two or three drinks across the week, unless it's Christmas or I am on holiday, when I drink a lot more.

costacoffeecup · 10/11/2018 13:54

@tiggerkid I'm not really sure why you're comparing? The amount you drink is perfectly safe and is neither here nor there to be honest. A glass of wine a week is not going to do you any harm at all.

ShreddShreddShredd · 10/11/2018 13:58

DH doesn't drink & I have two glasses of wine a week 🍷🍷 xx

SaucyJack · 10/11/2018 14:11

I drink every day. At least one, often two, and sometimes three ciders at home. More at the weekend if we stay up late to watch a film.

I find it relaxing, and I like to mark the time I’ve finally argued the last of the kids into bed and it’s now grown-up quiet time with a drink or two.

I do drink more than I should, but less than I used to. I know when to stop on a school night these days. I’m not interesting in cutting down too much more TBH- I’m at peace with it now.

Oldgranny · 10/11/2018 18:12

Drinking too much isn't funny
