How much do you drink?

Don't know how many of you watched the Adrian Chiles documentary about drinking recently but, for those of you, who didn't, I think he said he often drinks more than 100 units of alcohol per week.

For context, here is what a unit of alcohol means - www.drinkaware.co.uk/alcohol-facts/alcoholic-drinks-units/what-is-an-alcohol-unit/

My son told me one of his classmates said that his mum and dad share a bottle of wine each every night. My hairdresser told me she drinks 2 bottles of wine a week.

I drink a glass of wine a week but was surprised to discover recently that this is still more than 50% of women in this country!

Should I really be concerned about one small glass of wine per once a week????? Shock

Too much. But I'm trying to limit it to a bottle of wine a week. Sometimes it's successful, sometimes it's closer to 3!

Inthetropics · 09/11/2018 17:49

I have maybe 3 caipinhas and 2 glasses of wine in a year.

OvertiredandConfused · 09/11/2018 17:49

For the last year, only about 5 units a week. Before that, much more. I feel better for it.

I didn't realise people drank so much! I genuinely don't understand drinking in the evenings at home, but realise I'm in the minority with that opinion. I probably drink about 10 nights a year. I will probably have about 4 double gins each time. I'm 27 and used to love alcohol when I was younger but I'd happily never drink again.

MishMashMosher · 09/11/2018 18:02

If I drank a whole bottle of wine by myself I'd probably pass out.

Titsywoo · 09/11/2018 18:09

I think there is quite a good sized percentage of people who don't drink at all which accounts for a lot of the 50% who drink less than you. Most people I know drink fairly regularly (we are in early 40s) but over the last 5 years Ive noticed it declining a fair bit. Maybe we are just more conscious of our health now. We still have big nights out and over do it but only every couple of months. Most seem to have stopped drinking most evenings at home and some have given up entirely as they can no longer hack the hangovers. I used to drink a lot but now I don't drink at home and only go out once a month or so and try not to go OTT anymore.

MustBeThin · 09/11/2018 18:11

It's very rare I drink alcohol, not because I have anything against it but because I just don't fancy it. I'd rather have a cup of tea and biscuits after I've had a long day. 😂 I also like a homemade coldbrew coffee a day with gingerbread syrup too.

namechange1781 · 09/11/2018 18:13

I don't even drink 🍷 on specialty occasions, just never bothered me to drink, just makes me warm 😂

Arrowfanatic · 09/11/2018 18:25

Usually a bottle of wine a week, but some weeks none and some weeks more. Never more than 3 glasses of wine at a time though (more often 2 glasses) as I neither want to be drunk or hungover.

adoggymama · 09/11/2018 19:28

Like once a week- usually just one drink. (Gin and tonic) sometimes two if I'm feeling cheeky lol.

I've asked for a nice bottle of fancy gin for Christmas so I'm sure it'll be a few nights a week then haha

Heismyopendoor · 09/11/2018 19:29

I drink a few units a year.

Oopsusernamealreadytaken · 09/11/2018 19:30

I can go months, unless I’m going out then I’ll definitely have a few if I’m not driving. I’d rather drive and not drink though so often take this opportunity.

Mummadeeze · 09/11/2018 19:32

Way too much when I go out, but never drink at home. Luckily I don’t go out much - maybe twice a month.

John4703 · 09/11/2018 19:33

@fanfan18

One glass of wine per week is definitely okay! I drink at least a bottle a night, sometimes closer to two.

Yes I have a problem.

I during about the same and am working to settle on no more than one bottle a day.
It does help us to cope with my DW's illness

John4703 · 09/11/2018 19:35

Why can't I edit my post? I meant drink not during (and I thought * * made it italics)

LondonLassInTheCountry · 09/11/2018 19:38

Nothing. Due to health.
Use to drink maybe one night every couple of weeks.

Ex partner had a problem , does 2 bottles of wine a night, every night plus cider

Partner DID have a huge problem.
Been dry for 2 years now

MaudesMum · 09/11/2018 19:38

Was drinking at weekends - a couple of bottles of wine, and maybe a couple of gins as well. Currently trying to cut down, mainly for health reasons (as I'm trying to lose weight), but I'm something of an all or nothing person, so at present not drinking at all as its easier than having a glass and then stopping. Don't think it will last, but hopefully I'll find a way of drinking (say) a bottle over a weekend.

itssquidstella · 09/11/2018 19:41

I have at least three nights a week where I don't drink.

This week I have drunk on Wednesday (three small wines) and am drinking tonight- will probably have half a bottle of wine. I'm drinking again tomorrow as we're having friends over, but won't drink again for a good few days. Ideally I'm alcohol-free Sunday or Monday to Thursday (if I've drunk lots on Saturday then I don't drink on Sunday, but if I've had a restrained Saturday then I might have a glass or two of red wine with Sunday lunch).

lyndar · 09/11/2018 19:47

I don't drink at all I hate hangovers and alcohol just turns me into a drip ; it doesn't relax me it makes me feel sick

bellabasset · 09/11/2018 19:48

I have one or two bottles over a week, usually when relaxing of an evening.

Eliza9917 · 09/11/2018 19:51

The honest answer to the original question is far, far too much.

The current answer is nothing because I'm trying to give up and am on a diet. The vodka and lemonade in the fridge is calling me though. So far I've resisted.

Eliza9917 · 09/11/2018 19:54

My far, far too much is 2, usually 3, bottles of wine or the best part of a litre bottle of vodka in an evening.

Hence why I am giving up.

MrsCar · 09/11/2018 19:55

I drink 2 bottles of wine a week.

I don't even know if that's too much, but I'd guess that it is.

MeganChips · 09/11/2018 19:58

If I’m being totally honest, I probably drink 5 nights out of 7. Usually it’s a couple of G&Ts (measured) Friday and Saturday I might have half a bottle of wine on top of those.

Working out the units that is 10 for the gin and about 10 for the wine. Too much really.
